Thousands displaced by flooding rivers in Central African Republic

flood
Thousands of people have been displaced and dozens of homes destroyed after rivers overflowed in the Central African Republic.

Over 6,000 people have been displaced by flooding in the capital, Bangui. Local media reported that the Ubangi (Oubangui) river broke its banks last week after a period of heavy rain.

The overflowing river flooded areas in the southwest of the city close to the river's banks. Further heavy rain from around 20 October has worsened the situation and authorities now fear an outbreak of water borne diseases in flooded areas of the city.

Hundreds of houses have been damaged or completely destroyed. News reports said the neighbourhood of M'poko has seen the worst of the flooding, which has left around 60 houses destroyed.

A structure burns during the Kincade fire in northern California, October 24, 2019.
Over 52,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes as rapidly spreading brush fires fanned by strong gusts scorch towns across California, leaving dozens of houses in ruins.

Quickly consuming nearly 16,000 acres in Sonoma County since starting late Wednesday night, one of the fires has chased 2,000 residents from their homes as emergency responders struggle to hold back the flames.

Facing up to 70-mph winds, however, firefighters have only managed to contain about five percent of the blaze, according to Cal Fire. So far, nearly 50 structures have been lost.

Driving through town, streets remain snow-packed in Walsenburg. The visual of it all truly incredible. Cars, trees and Halloween decorations were buried under 12 inches of snow. However, although the snow may look beautiful the driving conditions remain extremely poor.

Tom Moran said, "Well when you are from Austin, Texas, it doesn't look too good."

And Rita Bastian who was trying to get to work was not able to because of the weather, "I work in Alamosa and I was trying to get there last night and I made it to Colorado City and then I went back home to Pueblo and so now I'm trying to make it again and the sheriff stopped me and said not to go over the pass just yet."

The smallest ozone hole in decades is one impact of this year's unusual warming event.
We just had the smallest ozone hole since 1982, the drought is dragging on and the fire danger is forecast to be up. What connects all these events? Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

South Australia was sizzling on Thursday, but relief is coming as a cold front makes its way across the country.

Victoria is expected to have a hot night before the front arrives, then it will be New South Wales's turn in the hot seat on Friday.

Pinning one event on a single climate driver is fraught, but this bout of warm weather fits with what would be expected as one of the strongest SSWs in 40 years starts impacting Earth's surface.

The official outlook is for warm dry conditions in the months ahead.
