Our changing atmosphere: Photos and video footage of gigantic rotating 'Roll Clouds'

Sometimes, the pictures come to you. A wedding photographer managed to be lucky enough to step outside his front door and witnesses this incredible scene. Rob Sharrock snapped up his Nikon D300 and dashed out to capture this monstrous roll cloud which seems to go on forever.

An incredible roll cloud dominates the skies above the photographer's house in Australia. Roll clouds ocurr ahead of storm fronts

Mr Sharrock , from Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia, lives in the house with the awning to the left of the frame. The roll cloud is a subtype of arcus cloud - the funnel is horizontal and does not connect to the ground. The other subtype of arcus is a shelf cloud, which also often appear to precede storm fronts.

These rare long clouds sometimes form near advancing cold fronts. A downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form.

Mr Sharrock said: 'It was amazing. I couldn't believe my luck in getting something like this right outside my own home. 'I just looked up in the sky and said "Bloody hell, what on earth is that? It seemed to go on for miles. It was truly incredible."

US: River Falls Short of Nebraska Nuke Plant Shutdown

Missouri river flood

Missouri National Guard soldiers, Staff Sergeant Kevin Ackley, left and Staff Sergeant Allen Godsey look at floodwaters from the Missouri river overtop a levy near Brownville, Neb., Sunday, June, 19, 2011.
The bloated Missouri River rose to within 18 inches of forcing the shutdown of a nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska but stopped and ebbed slightly Monday, after several levees in northern Missouri failed to hold back the surging waterway.

The river has to hit 902 feet above sea level at Brownville before officials will shut down the Cooper Nuclear Plant, which sits at 903 feet, Nebraska Public Power District spokesman Mark Becker said.

Flooding is a concern all along the river because of the massive amounts of water that the Army Corps of Engineers has released from six dams. Any significant rain could worsen the flooding especially if it falls in Nebraska, Iowa or Missouri, which are downstream of the dams.

The river is expected to rise as much as 5 to 7 feet above flood stage in much of Nebraska and Iowa and as much as 10 feet over flood stage in parts of Missouri. The corps predicts the river will remain that high until at least August.

Atlanta, US: Falling trees disrupt power, kill Cobb woman; 16,000 residents are reportedly without power statewide

Atlanta Braves fans stand under cover in the upper deck as rain falls on Turner Field during a rain delay in the top of the 5th inning of their game against the Texas Rangers Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga., June 18, 2011.
The woman slammed on the car brakes, desperately trying to avoid the large tree falling into her path on Powers Ferry Road.

But witnesses told police that Shufen Yang was too late.

Whether it was heavy rain, slippery roads or unusually gloomy conditions, Yang could not get out of the way Saturday evening as the tree crashed on her 1993 Honda Accord.

The 55-year-old Marietta woman was pronounced dead at the scene, the only reported fatality resulting from a round of thunderstorms that swept through the area Saturday afternoon.

"It's one of those freak things," said Cobb County police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman. "I can't think of anything [similar] that I can recall that we've handled before."

US: Shocking - Tornado death rates in 2011 return to pre-1925 levels

Tornado deaths per million people in United States since late 1800s
In a briefing delivered by NOAA officials Wednesday afternoon about this past spring's extreme weather, the stunning slide above was displayed. It shows that the number of tornado deaths per million people in 2011 has shot up to levels not seen in the era of modern weather forecasting.

In fact, this year's death rate has not been matched since the 1950s and is most comparable to rates pre-1925, before effective mass communication, doppler radar and tornado warnings. Through June 7, 525 tornado deaths have occurred - the sixth most on record in a single year (with six months remaining, although most tornado deaths historically occur by mid-June).

US: A Spring of Extremes like no other - Weather Events Unprecedented, Scientists Say

Washington - Tornadoes, floods, wildfires, snowmelt, thunderstorms, drought - for Americans, it was a spring to remember.

Government weather researchers said yesterday that, while similar extremes have occurred throughout modern American history, never before have they occurred in a single month, as they did in April.

The last time anything remotely like it happened was the spring of 1927, which also had many tornadoes and flooding, said Harold Brooks of the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma.

Kansas, US: Spring Hail Storm Damages Wheat Fields

Spring storms are wreaking havoc on farmers' fields in Sedgwick county. Wheat fields received the majority of damage during a recent hail storm.

For farmers, the damage has hurt their crops, and their pocketbooks.

Mick Rausch is no stranger to Spring storms, especially those that strike right in the middle of wheat harvest.

"I can remember doing wheat harvest when I was 8, 9, 10 years old," said Rausch.

Since a young age, Rausch has always hoped for a good crop.

"Farmers are eternal optimists," said Rausch.

Until the June 9th hail storm hit, Rausch had been fairly lucky.

"You've got a whole years worth of income potential out there. The thought of losing a whole year's work in a 5 minute storm, it can lead to some sleepless nights," said Rausch.

This storm, however, lasted for just under an hour.

Baseball, even softball-sized hail, left five of Rausch's un-harvested wheat fields mostly damaged.

Saudi Arabia: Volcano eruption fears allayed

Jeddah: The Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) has ruled out the possibility of any volcanic or seismic activity in the Kingdom during the next two years, refuting predictions made by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

"Any prediction of volcanic or seismic activity requires continuous observation of the earth as well as the changes that indicate its impending occurrence," the SGS said in a statement on Sunday.

Professor Ali Adnan Eshky of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah warned of possible volcanic eruptions in the Kingdom during the next two years, citing the USGS report. He said a volcano in Al-Eis would affect Madinah, Yanbu and surrounding areas.

The SGS said it was possible to predict an eruption a short while before its occurrence by continuously monitoring all phenomena that accompany volcanic activity such as gases and expansion of cracks caused by tremors.

"What has been said about possible volcanic eruptions in the Kingdom is not based on any confirmed scientific measurement," the SGS said of the USGS warning. It said earthquakes in the Kingdom are linked to seismic activities in the Arabian Peninsula.

Speaking about volcanic areas in the Kingdom, the SGS said: "They are in the form of lava mountains formulated about 30 million years ago. The last eruption occurred about 800 years ago, southeast of Madinah."
