Lightning strikes blamed for three house fires in Flagstaff, Arizona

Lightning and heavy rains hit close to home over the weekend, with the Flagstaff Fire Department responding to three lightning-caused residential fires and the Coconino County Sheriff's Office conducting a number of weather-related search and rescue operations.

The lightning fires occurred at homes in University Heights, Continental, and Lake Mary Road. The first home was empty at the time of the fire while residents called the fire department to put out the blaze on the other two homes.

The fired was contained quickly and no one was hurt according to Flagstaff Fire Department Battalion B Chief Kristin Smith.

"We had some really close strikes this week," Smith said. "Each fire occurred on the roof of the homes and we were able to confine each fire to the area of origin so no serious damage was done."

HAILSTONES the size of golf balls rained down in the northeast of Spain yesterday sending holidaymakers fleeing for cover.

More than 25 litres of rain fell per square meter in just one hour over the weekend with Castellon, Tarragona and Teruel the worst affected regions.

Images show several huge hail stones left behind after violently falling from the sky causing flash floods

The massive pellets were reported to have caused extensive damage to cars leaving windscreens with gaping holes.

Myanmar flooding
Flooding across large parts of Myanmar has displaced more than 100,000 people, causing two deaths, while dramatic riverbank erosion has washed away a Buddhist pagoda, officials, residents and state media said on Monday.

Water levels have risen steadily since unrelenting monsoon rain began to lash the heart of the Southeast Asian country in early July, driving some people to higher land or seek shelter in Buddhist monasteries, a disaster relief official said.

"The situation is under control, but what happens now will depend on the weather," Ko Ko Naing, director general of the ministry of social welfare, relief and resettlement, told Reuters.

"We are prepared to support the flood-hit areas because flooding happens every year."

The government has provided food and other assistance to a total of 116,817 displaced people by Monday, as well as longer-term shelter for those outside settlements where flood waters are not expected to subside immediately, he said.

One man drowned in the floods in the Sagaing region and another was swept away while crossing a stream in Chin state, said a resettlement official in the ministry, Kay Thwe Win.

When it rains, it pours! Just ask residents living just outside Harrisburg, Pa., where a quick-hitting but exceptionally intense downpour dumped an unbelievable amount of rain.

In a single hour, just before 7 p.m., the atmosphere unloaded 4.27 inches at Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown, Pa. Over an inch came down in a mere 10 minutes between 6:15 and 6:25 p.m.


Harrisburg's chance of getting even 3.5 inches in an hour was just 0.1 percent, much less over four inches, tweeted meteorologist Alex Lamers.

In all, 4.71 inches of rain fell Sunday, shattering records for the date and ranking as one of the top five daily rain totals ever recorded in the Harrisburg area.

A massive new two-ton species of sunfish has been discovered after it washed up on a beach in New Zealand.

A group of international researchers had been studying the Indo-Pacific region for four years before making their fascinating discovery. It is the first new species of this type of fish in 130 years.

"The new species managed to evade discovery for nearly three centuries by 'hiding' in a messy history of sunfish taxonomy, partially because they are so difficult to preserve and study, even for natural history museums," said lead author of the study Marianne Nyegaard.

The number of people killed in wild animal attacks in Chitwan National Park and buffer zones has increased.

According to the record of the CNP, as many as 14 people have lost their lives in the wild animal attacks during the last fiscal year (2016/17) as against five people killed in the previous fiscal year (2015/16).

Of them, seven were killed in rhino attack, five in elephant attack and two in tiger attack.

Similarly, 30 people were injured in the wild animals' attack in the last fiscal year, shared CNP information officer Nurendra Aryal.

Six people were also killed due to attacks by wild animals while collecting fodders in the buffer zones of the Park.

Pit bull terrier breaks through window to attack man on road in Denison, Texas

Denison police are investigating after they say two pit bulls jumped through a window, one of them attacking a man walking nearby.

Police said the man was walking down Twining Drive Saturday afternoon when he was attacked.

We're told the victim was bit several times on his leg and foot but was able to punch the dog who attacked him to get away.

He was driven to Texoma Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Both dogs went back to where they came from, but have since been captured by Animal Control.

No word yet on whether any charges will be filed.

Bischofshofen's game against Turkish side Kasimpasa was called off on Sunday after massive hailstones covered the pitch

While Jordan Spieth was claiming the Open title at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, hailstones the size of golf balls called an end to a pre-season friendly.

Kasimpasa were 1-0 up against Austrian side Bischofshofen through Hasan Bilal's goal when hail began to fall on the pitch.

The massive hailstones entirely covered the field and with no more play possible due to the storm, the second half of the match was cancelled.

Kasimpasa showed the amazing sight of the huge hailstones bouncing down on the pitch with a social media video - it's no wonder they could not play on!

Gina Chiarelli and her dog, an 11-year-old Maltese named Rocky, had just stepped onto the grass in the backyard of her east Vancouver home earlier this month when a raccoon charged at the pair and sank its teeth into Rocky's head.

"We were there maybe four seconds, and all of a sudden," she said, "a huge raccoon, bigger than my dog, came flying out from under the deck and grabbed my dog by his head with his jaws

She could not separate the raccoon from Rocky's head for several minutes. But once the raccoon finally opened its mouth, in an instant, it began attacking Chiarelli - viciously biting her, scratching, locking on to the back of her legs. The attack went on for 15 minutes.

"It was like a whirling dervish just attacking me relentlessly," she said. "There was blood all across the deck and all over the house. My pants were just soaked in blood, big huge holes in them. I seriously thought that animal was going to kill me. I really, really thought that he was going to kill me."

It may be one of the more dramatic and violent raccoon attacks of the last several months, but it's hardly an isolated incident. It's just one of dozens reported nationwide in states including Virginia, Maine, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana, Florida and New Jersey.
