8 Nov 2016 (Excerpts) - "It is cold, rain and snow have fallen in abundance on several regions of the country. These incidents caused several fatal accidents on the roads .... at least 8 people were killed and 48 others injured in road accidents in several parts of the country.

"Road traffic in the capital has been severely disrupted by inclement weather and interminable traffic jams have formed around the main roads in Algiers.

"In the west of the country, the army had to intervene to reopen roads, blocked by snow, especially in Sidi Bel Abbes."

A potent storm system will track across eastern Europe, unleashing significant snowfall and strong winds.

Areas expecting accumulating snowfall include northern Romania, northern Moldova, eastern Hungary, eastern Slovakia, southeast Poland and much of northern and western Ukraine.

A mix of rain and snow will begin on Saturday across the region before transitioning to all snow across western Ukraine, southeast Poland and eastern Hungary. Snow will continue into Sunday night for many areas.

Snow will fall heavily at times from the Carpathian Mountains northward to Lviv and Kiev on Sunday. Widespread snowfall of 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) is expected throughout this region with local amounts in excess of 30 cm (12 inches).

The heaviest snowfall in Lviv on Sunday and in Kiev from midday Sunday into Sunday night.

Shocking surveillance footage has captured the moment a mother managed to save her two-year-old son as two dogs viciously mauled them outside their house.

The attack occurred in Anaheim, California, on Tuesday. It started when the boy was set upon by the two dogs in the front yard.

His mother then came to rescue to him, grabbing him and trying to run inside their home, but at the front door she realized she couldn't find her keys.

Spencer Bishop, the boy's father and woman's husband, was at work at the time. He said he has seen the surveillance footage but cannot watch it again because it is too shocking.

Heavy rain and gail force winds hit Durban and the Dolphin Coast this afternoon, with the second wave of hail having just arrived in Ballito at around 3.30pm.

The dark, heavy storm clouds could be seen travelling from Durban towards the Dolphin Coast.

Numerous trees were blown over and parts of the roof at Linc church in Salt Rock were ripped off by the wind.

A tree fell over onto the N2 just before the Umhlali turn-off north bound that was obstructing the road.

Another huge tree has been flung across Marion Place blocking the road, directly round a corner.

Scientists are trying to understand why 70 giant freshwater stingrays, some as big as a car, have been found dead in Thailand over the past few weeks. The die-off has been taking place in the Mae Klong River.

Thai officials have found the river to be slightly more acidic than normal, but aren't sure if that could be the cause. Some speculate that the rays may have been poisoned by cyanide or succumbed to a recent spill from an ethanol plant.

"One thing is clear: a reduction of pollution from surrounding factories is needed to improve the health of the river and save the stingrays in the long term," Zeb Hogan, host of the Monster Fish series on Nat Geo Wild, said.

The WWF says that these rays are being increasingly isolated into separate groups due to construction of large hydropower dams, reducing genetic diversity. They are vulnerable to siltation as they spend much of their time along the river's sandy bottom. And they can be caught up in fishing activities such as longlines and gill nets, and may be killed as bycatch.

The Bureau of Meteorology says large hail fell through the north-eastern areas of the Adelaide metropolitan area.

The weather system swept south-east on a day when there was only a 40% chance of rain predicted

Sudden and severe thunderstorms swept across Adelaide on Friday afternoon, with huge hailstones hitting streets across the city centre.

The system swept south-east on a day when there was only a 40% chance of rain predicted. Adelaide experienced 31C heat before the storm broke, bringing wind gusts of more than 90km/h.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned wind gusts of more than 125 km/h were possible in the North East Pastoral, Mid North and Riverland areas.

Localised flash flooding was reported as some areas received up to 10mm of rain in as many minutes. The bureau said areas that may be particularly affected include Adelaide, Whyalla, Renmark, Mount Gambier, Leigh Creek and Moomba.

"Massive auroras and an unidentified object are dancing in the sky above Abisko National Park," reports Chad Blakley of Abisko, Sweden. "Our group of eight lucky aurora watchers were out in the park enjoying the display when something very odd appeared in the sky - a luminous crescent-shaped cloud with what appears to be some sort of a flowing, cloud like tail." The park's webcam captured this image of the cloud:

"At first I thought the object was lens flare produced by the bright Moon, but the object has moved from one area of the sky to another in four sequential photographs captured over a 20 minute timeframe," adds Blakley. "Seeing this incredible phenomenon share the sky with strong auroras has truly been a once in a lifetime event for our guests."

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Japanese island of Honshu, USGS reports. TEPCO said it is checking the integrity of its crippled nuclear plant, as the epicenter was located relatively close to Fukushima Prefecture.

The quake struck around 9:43pm GMT on Friday, some 65 km east-northeast of the city of Sendai. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at the lower magnitude of 5.8.

No tsunami warning was issued by the JMA. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also said that "a destructive pacific-wide tsunami is not expected."

A series of earthquakes has rattled parts of Oklahoma just days after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake damaged homes and businesses in Cushing in north-central Oklahoma.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was recorded at 9:50 a.m. Friday seven miles east-northeast of Luther in Oklahoma County in central Oklahoma. It was preceded by another 3.0 magnitude quake at 5:12 a.m. about 10 miles northwest of Medford in northern Oklahoma and a 3.3 magnitude quake at 2:54 a.m. about 10 miles east-southeast of Geary in west-central Oklahoma.

No damage or injuries were immediately report. Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0.

The 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday damaged structures in Cushing, a key world oil hub. No damage was reported at the oil terminal.

A crocodile attacked and killed a 13-year-old Birchenough Bridge boy, while his friend was left without a heel during a fishing expedition in Save River last Thursday midday.

The late Owen Chianga (13) went for fishing in the company of his friend Liberty Ruzivo (15) as part of the former's efforts to supplement income at home, given that his physically challenged father was failing to send him to school.

The incident was on the lips of many after The Manica Post visited the area last Friday when Owen was laid to rest.

Owen's remains were recovered the next day in a nearby tunnel.

Chauruva Ruzivo, the father of the survivor, who rushed to the scene when he heard his son screaming for help and yanked him from the jaws of one of the marauding crocodiles, confirmed that the boys were attacked by two huge crocodiles.
