The Captain JP III cruise ship is wedged against the Livingston Avenue train bridge that spans the Hudson River, Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 in Albany, N.Y.
Rising waters and ice jams along New York's Hudson River created chaos along the waterway Friday morning when several vessels, including an unoccupied cruise ship, broke free and floated away.

New York State Police said in a series of posts on Twitter that the boats broke loose from their moorings in Troy before floating south down the Hudson River towards Albany.

State police were forced to close several bridges between Troy and Albany during the morning rush hour as a precaution as the boats drifted south.

State police posted an aerial image on Twitter showing the boats floating downriver.

The dog, an American Stafford, was usually kept in the garage of the small house. Apparently the infant, somehow, crawled into the garage.
An eleven-month-old baby died on Monday morning in hospital, the victim of the injuries she suffered after being bitten by a dog. The attack took place in the small house, located in San Gabriel de Calle Blancos de Goicoechea, in San José, around 10:30 am Monday.

The parents of the only child took her to the nearby clinic in Tibas, where after administering first aid, transferred to her to the Children's Hospital in San Jose, where she died.

The dog, an American Stafford, was owned by the family. It was one one of six dogs that were without proper conditions and a parrot, whose possession is prohibited.

The dog typically ran loose in the small garage. Apparently, the baby crawled from the house into the garage and was attacked. The mother was also injured while trying to rescue the infant.

Authorities have gone door to door at Bluewater in Townsville's north to check on dozens of people in homes that were inundated by flash flooding after a day of torrential rain.

Multiple swift-water rescues were conducted to reach people in the area who were trapped by the rapidly rising flood.

Police placed Bluewater under a safety and preservation declaration, urging residents to avoid the area until it is safe to return.

Late on Wednesday, SES northern regional manager Daryl Camp told the ABC they were still checking on trapped residents.

"All the people we know about in Toolakea and Bluewater have been helped," he said.

Indonesia's volatile Mount Merapi volcano has unleashed a river of lava that flowed 1400 metres down its slopes.

Kasbani, head of the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre, says Merapi on the island of Java has entered an "effusive eruption phase."

Kasbani, who goes by a single name, said the volcanic material that spewed out late on Tuesday was the volcano's longest lava flow since it began erupting again in August.

He says the alert level of the volcano has not been raised.

Russian city of Saratov hit by worst blizzards in 30 years

Recent massive blizzards turned out too much for Saratov where people urge a state of emergency to be introduced as the city remains paralyzed for over a week despite the common knowledge that it snows in Russia.

Since January 20, Saratov on the Volga River has been hit by several heavy blizzards unseen in 30 years, with the authorities saying the fallout exceeded 80 centimeters.

The city of 900,000 was unprepared for so much snow. Many of streets became impassable to see Saratov remaining stuck in a constant traffic jam for days. Only one out of 10 tram routes are currently operational, while bus and trolley circulations between the city's center and the suburbs seized.

The bad weather led to numerous flights being delayed at the Saratov airport. The trains traveling from Siberia to the Russian South got stuck in the snow outside the city on a number of occasions too.

Scientists mystified as Yellowstone experiences record-breaking geyser activity

A scientist from the US Geological Survey has branded 2018 "one of the most memorable years in a long time" for geyser watchers in their summary of seismic activity in Yellowstone. The Steamboat Geyser, considered the tallest active geyser in the world, as well as others, erupted unusually frequently last year.

The USGS is now back to work after the partial government shutdown, with Yellowstone's "2018 year in review" noting an unusual activity among the national park's geysers last year. In the Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles, USGS Volcano Observatory geophysicist Michael Poland has revealed that geysers became "the story of 2018", with the world's tallest active geyser, Steamboat, having a record-setting number of eruptions.

Although the gap between Steamboat spewing out hot water can sometimes last years, in 2018 it erupted 32 times, beating the 1964 record of 29 eruptions. Apart from the 1960s, a past period of unusually high activity occurred in the 1980s, according to the USGS. The eruptions began in March 2018, and after two additional outbursts scientists began to keep the geyser under closer observation, deploying sensors around it. This shed light on its plumbing system and eruptive patterns "in unprecedented detail", the review reads.

Over 1,500 flights cancelled as winter weather wreaks havoc US's busiest airports
More than a 1,000 flights have been canceled or delayed in anticipation of snow and icy conditions Tuesday, as a winter storm threatens the Midwest, the South and the East Coast.

There are 977 flight cancellations and 143 delays as of 4:55 a.m., according to FlightAware.com.

"A dangerous week of cold air and travel conditions are coming up," Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean said Monday. "Snow and ice will coat even the Deep South Tuesday through Wednesday, which will make travel incredibly difficult and possibly crippling."

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has canceled 170 flights to and from Atlanta on Tuesday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

'Hundreds of thousands' of fish dead in Australia

Darling River Mass Death

Just weeks after up to a million fish were killed, another mass death occurred in the Murray-Darling river system.
"Hundreds of thousands" of fish have died in drought-stricken Australia in the last few days and more mass deaths are likely to occur, the authorities warned Tuesday.

Locals around the Darling River were confronted with a sea of white, as dead fish carpeted the waters near the southeastern Outback town of Menindee.

Just weeks after up to a million were killed -- with scientists pointing to low water and oxygen levels as well as possibly toxic algae -- another mass death occurred in the key agricultural region.

Inspectors from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries have visited the site and said they found that "hundreds of thousands of fish have died".

"Further fish deaths in the Darling River are anticipated as a significant number of fish have been observed under stress," the department said in a statement.

Some 700 kilos (1,543 pounds) of dead fish were removed from the river Monday, with similar amounts expected to be collected Tuesday, it added.

The Darling River is part of the Murray-Darling River system that stretches thousands of kilometres across several states.

Cars are buried in snow in Toronto on Jan. 29, 2019.
Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Toronto, the day after a record-breaking snowfall blanketed the city.

The warning also extends to the rest of the GTA.

"A frigid Arctic air mass and strong winds will result in wind chill values of -30 to -35 tonight through to Friday morning," the national weather agency said in its warning.

680 NEWS meteorologist Jill Taylor said temperatures will fall to -9 C on Tuesday afternoon. The windchill will be near -30 overnight.

Conditions are expected to improve on Friday as milder air moves into the region.

Meanwhile, the cleanup continues from the massive snow storm that led to traffic and transit issues, as well as school bus cancellations and school closures.

In Toronto, the city recorded the largest single-day snowfall - which led to school bus cancellations in the Toronto District and Catholic school boards.

Taylor said around 26.4 centimetres of snow was recorded at Pearson International Airport on Monday, breaking the record of 13.4 centimetres set on that date in 2009. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the city recorded 33 centimetres, which factors in the early-morning snow.

But the last time Toronto had more than 20 centimetres of snow in a single day was 51 years ago - 20.8 centimetres on Jan. 14, 1968. Prior to that, Toronto recorded 36.8 centimetres on Jan. 23, 1966, and 27.9 centimetres on Jan. 3, 1943.
