It's the first day of fall in Canada, but parts of the Yukon are experiencing more winter-like weather.

Environment Canada issued the country's first snowfall warning of the season for the Dempster Highway.

The warning, issued Wednesday morning, said "a frontal system moving through the Yukon will generate heavy snow across the Dempster Highway with the highest accumulation forecast to be near the Ogilvie Mountains."

It said gusting winds of up to 80 km/h, combined with 15 to 20 cm of snow, will reduce visibility for drivers.

70-year-old southeast Alabama man killed in dog attack

A southeast Alabama man was killed in a dog attack while he was out walking.

Phenix City police were dispatched at 2 a.m. Tuesday to the 100 block of 17th Avenue on a report of a dog bite, said Capt. Darryl Williams. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the 70-year-old victim on the ground with a serious injury to his left arm.

Frank J. Cobb was treated on the scene and then transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital. He was later moved to an Atlanta hospital where he died.

Two girls from Dum Dum died after being electrocuted while in a separate incident two fishermen from Mahishadal died after being struck by lightning when they went to Rupnarayan river.

The two girls have been identified as Shreya Banik (12) and Anushka Nandi (13) touched an electric pole at the Bandhabnagar area of Dum Dum when they were playing there. Both of them were declared brought dead at RG Kar Medical College.

Meanwhile, a heavy rainfall alert has been issued for some of the south Bengal districts in the next 24 hours. "An orange alert has been issued in some of the south Bengal districts which will bring more rainfall. Another low pressure trough is expected to form over east central Bay of Bengal on Saturday which may further bring rainfall in different parts of the state in the next week as well. The low pressure will advance towards west to north west and finally reach the Odisha coast. As a result all the south Bengal districts will receive it in the next week as well," a weather official said.

Two people died on the spot after they were struck by lightning in Kinaba sub county, Kanungu District.

Kigezi region police spokesperson, Mr Elly Maate said Wednesday that Edidiya Turyayebwa, 42, and Diyana Kajowa, 31, both residents of Omunsyokwe village were struck dead Tuesday afternoon while in the garden preparing for the planting season. Four of their colleagues were left nursing wounds.

"The injured who include Flora Nyinakiiza, 40, and her three children; Susan Ayebazibwe, 16, Friday Akandwanaho, 5, and Blessings Karungi were taken to the nearby health facility while bodies of the deceased were handed over to relatives for burial," he said.

Two members of a nomadic family were injured while over 400 goats and sheep died when the lightning struck the upper reaches of Naranag in Kangan area of Ganderbal district Tuesday night, officials said.

Some nomadic families had camped at Laman Naranag area on their way back home from the seasonal pastures in the higher reaches when the lightening struck them.

An official said that the injured family members were brought to Trauma Hospital Kangan for treatment.

He said that both were stable and had sustained minor injuries.

Two persons, both farmers, were killed in lightning strike in Bareilly district on Wednesday evening.

The incident was reported from Bichuriya village. Karan Singh and Sher Singh were sowing seeds in a field when it started raining. But they continued working, and were struck by lightning. They died on the spot.

Their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination by police and the district administration has announced compensation for their families under the state disaster relief funds.

Bhamora's SHO Vikram Singh said, "The victims were the sole earning members of their families and were good friends. Family has been assured of compensation under the relevant schemes by the district administration."

7 fatal tiger attacks in one month in a district of Maharashtra, India

An unprecedented spate of fatal tiger attacks in a forest range of Gadchiroli district has struck terror in 18 villages in the region.

A sub-adult tiger, aged just about two years, is suspected to have killed seven persons, all men, in the Porla range within a month. Such a spate of attacks is unprecedented, say wildlife officials.

Officials, however, have confirmed that only four of the attacks are by the two-year-old tiger. They are still unsure about whether the other three victims, too, had died due to an attack by this tiger.

The earlier known instances of attacks by Pandharkawda tigers Avni, which was shot dead in 2018, and Rajura tiger RT1, were spread over one-and-a-half years.

Gadchiroli Conservator of Forest Ashok Mankar told The Indian Express, "A two-year old tiger, who was separated from its mother a couple of months ago, has killed at least four persons, beginning August 15. We have the camera trap evidence for the same."

A polar blast which brought heavy snow and temperatures as low as -8C to NSW and Victoria during the past 24 hours is set to be followed by another arctic cold front this weekend.

In NSW, Tamworth dropped to -2.6C this morning, its coldest September morning in nine years, while the Thredbo top station was -4.2C only a day after it measured -8C.

At Victoria's Mt Baw Baw, which is currently 2C, some 28cm of snow has fallen in the past 36 hours.

Weatherzone's Joel Pippard said the polar blast had frozen large part of NSW and Victoria.

A polar blast is when cold air comes straight from Antarctica in the south and does not have time to warm up.
