Baby boy fighting for his life after being mauled by dog in Hawick, Scotland

A newborn is in a critical condition after being attacked by a dog.

The baby boy, who is six weeks old, was attacked at an address in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, at 4.35pm yesterday.

He was rushed to Borders General Hospital and then transferred to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Sick Children via an air ambulance.

Hawick councillor Davie Paterson confirmed the boy's condition 'could be a matter of life and death'.

He said: 'It's an absolute tragedy and it's going to hit the town hard. 'I don't know the full circumstances of what happened but from what I'm hearing the child could be scarred for life. 'I was told about it with the council yesterday and I was absolutely horrified.'

A neighbourhood is both confused and frightened due to a large number of unexplained boom noises heard at night.

Residents of Fair Oaks in northeast Sacramento, in the US state of California, can't explain why they're hearing the noises.

A number of them wrote about the concerns on Facebook after hearing booms since mid-February.

"I've heard the booms occasionally and thought I was just hearing things," one woman wrote.

"Wondering if it's a weather phenomenon or overhead aircraft.

Satellite images of dramatic changes in a glacier in the Russian High Arctic is forcing scientists to rethink how cold-based glaciers work.

Cold-based glaciers exist at high latitudes that receive little snow or rain. They rarely move more than a few yards per year.

University of Colorado Boulder glaciologist Michael Willis was studying the Vavilov Ice Cap on October Revolution Island in the Kara Sea north of Siberia when he discovered the glacier began sliding dozens of times faster than is typical, according to a blog post from NASA.

A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia on Friday (April 12), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, triggering a tsunami warning and sending panicked residents fleeing from their homes.

The quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 17km off the east coast of Sulawesi island, the USGS said, where a 7.5-magnitude quake-tsunami around the city of Palu killed more than 4,300 people last year.

Indonesia's disaster agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities in Morowali district, where residents were advised to move away from the coast.

Seven people have died and four remain missing after a flash flood struck parts of the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, local authorities announced Friday.

In a social media post, the city's emergency management bureau wrote that two more workers had been confirmed dead, adding to the five that had been declared dead in a statement from earlier that same day. The latter statement had also said all the deceased were municipal employees who had been cleaning and surveying drainage systems during the torrential downpour Thursday that led to the flash flood.

Rescue operations to locate the four workers still missing are currently underway, according to authorities.

A massive dust storm has engulfed the northern Indian state of Rajasthan on April 7, 2019. Clouds of dust were swept up from a nearby desert by weather patterns that have circulated over the city.

The fruit and almond productions have been the most affected by the frosts and hailstorms recorded in recent days in practically the whole Iberian Peninsula, according to Agroseguro.

The first estimates point to more than 12,200 hectares of crops being hit.
The frosts have caused the most damages. More than 6,000 hectares of almonds have been affected, especially in the province of Albacete, which accounts for more than half of the affected acreage. Meanwhile, 4,000 hectares of fruit trees have also been damaged, especially in the Region of Murcia, due to the low temperatures registered since the early morning of March 27.
