Signs and Portents: Three-eared cat found in Norfolk, UK

Image

Brian, who has three ears, is believed to be between four and ten years old.
Staff at a Norfolk rescue centre were equally perplexed when one intrepid feline arrived sporting an extra ear.

As Feline Care Cat Rescue in East Harling continue to care for the moggie, it is hoped its owner will now step forward. Brian, as he has been affectionately called, arrived at the centre on Monday after being caught in one of the centre's traps after setting off security alarms at a nearby business.

Manager of the centre, Molly Farrar, said: "We expected it to be one of our own cats who'd been causing problems so this handsome, mature gentleman was quite a surprise to us.

"We've cared for plenty of cats with one eye, three legs or six toes and several cats with no tail left, but this is our first three-eared cat.

The centre is hoping that Brian has not been dumped but has simply got lost.

Severe weather warnings in Cumbria, UK

Two towns in Cumbria are warned to take immediate action and prepare for flooding as torrential rain sweeps across the UK.

The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings - indicating a risk to life - in northern England this weekend.

There are fears of "significant river flooding" as a band of torrential rain sweeps across the UK, drenching already saturated ground.

Cumbria - which suffered severe flooding in November 2009 - and North Lancashire are expected to be the worst-hit areas.

There is still concern over southwest Scotland and other parts of northwest England and north Wales.

The Environment Agency has issued 6 severe flood warnings, mostly in and around the towns of Egremont and Kendal, on opposite sides of the Lake District.

Unusual severe weather threat for Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Jordan next week

Unusual weather for Middle East

The threat for severe weather will dip unusually far south into the Middle East early next week.

Residents across northern Saudi Arabia, southwestern Iraq and eastern Jordan are being put on alert for potentially violent thunderstorms.

The danger will shift northwest to southeast across the threat zone from Monday into Tuesday. Tabuk and Medina, Saudi Arabia, and Najaf, Iraq, are among the cities at risk.

"On Tuesday, the severe threat will become more spotty in nature from Medina on south," stated AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Richards.

"Damaging wind and flooding rain will be the main threats from any severe thunderstorm," Richards said. Hail cannot be ruled out.

Richards added that the impending severe weather danger in this part of the Middle East is rather unusual and will be triggered by a storm system that is diving farther south than normal.

"Typically, [the areas at risk] are dry most of the time and at most, any severe thunderstorm is spotty," he said. "However, we could see a squall line [of damaging thunderstorms] develop early next week."

Freak 'mini tornado' hits Northern Ireland

Roof slates and other debris went flying through the air, landing in people's gardens.
Several Glengormley homeowners are facing huge repair bills after what has been described as a "mini tornado" ripped through the Ballyhenry area on Thursday afternoon (November 12).

More than half a dozen houses in Ballyhenry Avenue and neighbouring Dorchester Crescent were badly damaged in the freak weather event, which local resident Gavin Robinson described as "a mini tornado."

Trees were blown over, garden fences were blown down and ridge tiles and slates were ripped off the roofs of a number of properties.

Despite the flying roof tiles and other debris, local people say no-one was injured during the incident.

Repair work is under way in the area, but the cost of fixing some of the hardest-hit homes could run to thousands of pounds.

Comment: Other incidents of 'rare' UK tornadoes this year include: West Sussex, Northampton, Somerset and Newport.

Signs and Portents: Baby born with two heads in Bangladesh

Image

A baby with two heads has been born in Bangladesh.
Doctors at a Bangladesh hospital were treating a baby girl born with two heads on Thursday, medical officials and the newborn's father said.

The baby was born late Wednesday and is now being treated for breathing difficulties after being shifted to the intensive care unit of the country's largest hospital in Dhaka.

"When I saw my baby, I was awestruck. She has two fully developed heads. She is eating with two mouths and breathing with two noses," her father, Jamal Mia, said.

"Still, I thank Allah that she and the mother are now okay," Mia told AFP.

Abu Kawsar, owner of the Standard Hospital of Total Healthcare where the baby was born by Cesarean section, said initial tests showed she only has one set of vital organs.
