Rare blue-colored red king crab caught in Nome, Alaska

A rare blue-colored red king crab was part of a fisherman's catch earlier this month in Nome, Alaska.

KNOM reports Frank McFarland found the blue crab in his pot when fishing on July Fourth off Nome. The blue crab is being kept alive at the Norton Sound Seafood Center until McFarland can have it mounted.

The rare crab has become a rock star of sorts, with people showing up at the center to have their photos taken with it.

Scott Kent, with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Nome, says he has no idea why the red king crab is blue, but suspects it's just a mutation.

Kent says a blue crab "turns up once in a blue moon."

Residents wade through floods as they go back to their home in suburban Quezon city, north of Manila, Philippines. Typhoon Rammasun killed at least 94 people, forced 530,000 to flee their homes and destroyed 7,000 homes.

The strongest typhoon to hit southern China in four decades has killed at least 16 people in the region after leaving scores dead in the Philippines.

Strong winds and rain from Super Typhoon Rammasun hit dozens of southern coastal cities in the provinces of Guangdong and Hainan and the region of Guangxi, affecting more than 3 million people, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported Saturday.

Severe hailstorm in July in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan

Ping pong ball-sized hailstorm hit Ust-Kamenogorsk city in eastern Kazakhstan on July 15, Tengrinews reports citing Yk-news.kz.

People were looking for shelters to hide from the hailstones the size of a quail eggs.

"We built a homemade greenhouse from our old windows, but hailstorm destroyed it," a resident of Mirniy village said looking slightly shocked, "The garden was covered with a 5 cm layer of ice. All our seedling died."

The emergency services are estimating the damage caused by hail that lasted for 7 minutes. The department received around 50 calls during these 7 minutes. People were mostly complaining about damaged cars, metal bodies and windows of more than 30 vehicles were damaged. Several trees fell that day, but fortunately no one was hurt.

Surges of gas-charged fluid may have explosively generated the earthquakes preceding a giant sinkhole in Louisiana, researchers say.

These findings could lead to a better understanding of how pressurized fluids can trigger earthquakes and tremors, scientists added.

"Four fracking wastewater wells near Oklahoma City have caused hundreds of earthquakes since 2008, a new study finds."

On Aug. 3, 2012, a giant sinkhole formed overnight near Bayou Corne in southeast Louisiana, prompting a declaration of emergency from state officials and evacuation of nearby residents. The sinkhole - filled with a slurry of water, debris and crude oil - swallowed cypress trees, and recent estimates suggest it is now more than 215,000 square feet (20,000 square meters) and about 330 feet (100 m) deep. Russian authorities open investigation into hailstorm deaths

Russian authorities have opened an investigation into the deaths of two children during a severe hailstorm in Siberia.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement published online Monday that two young girls aged 3 and 4 had died Saturday in the lakeside town of Bredsk, not far from the large Siberian city of Novosibirsk. The two girls died after sustaining traumatic brain injuries when a tree fell on their tent, where they were taking shelter from the storm along with their families.

Videos have surfaced online showing beach-goers in Novosibirsk huddling desperately under umbrellas, as cherry-sized hailstones pelt them mercilessly. Weather has been unusually extreme across much of Russia this summer, with snow hitting parts of central Russia that rarely see freezing temperatures in summer.

As stormy skies cleared over Florida earlier this week, Joe Zuniga experienced an extraordinary moment he described as spiritual, and unforgettable. The parting of the storm.

As Zuniga drove along Interstate 75, the clouds suddenly shifted in a peculiar way, creating an large square-shaped sunny patch through which motorists passed. It was as if rain clouds had parted over the motorists for a reason.

"They looked almost like something spiritual coming through the storm, and the Lord has got your back," Zuniga told the Weather Channel.
