Dam burst threatens over 230,000 people with flooding

Thousands of people living in Russia's Orenburg region have been forced to evacuate after severe flooding caused a dam to burst in the Ural river.

"Don't wait for the situation to become threatening! Leave! You need to evacuate as quickly as possible," the region's mayor Sergei Salmin told residents, Reuters reported.

The situation in the city, about 1,500 km (930 miles) east of Moscow, is "critical" and some 300 houses have already been submerged, according to the mayor.

Several parts of the Russian Siberian and Ural mountains as well as neighbouring parts of Kazakhstan have been hit with floods in recent days and a state of emergency has been declared in Orenburg.

Officials say a burst dam in the city of Orsk, about 276 km (171 miles) east of Orenburg, threatens over 230,000 people with flooding.

Motorcyclist and child fall into road sinkhole in Nonthaburi, Thailand

A dramatic road collapse under the Rama IV Bridge in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi, sent a motorcyclist and a child tumbling into a sinkhole hole, prompting swift rescue efforts by locals. The incident, which occurred at 11.20am, severely disrupted traffic and led to an immediate closure of the affected area.

A video capturing the heart-stopping moment when a section of the road in front of Wat Bor suddenly gave way has gone viral, thanks to a post by FM91 Trafficpro. The footage shows vehicles navigating the stretch when, without warning, the road collapses, forming a large, deep pit.

A pickup truck narrowly avoids disaster, stopping just in time, but a motorcycle carrying a young man and a child is less fortunate, plunging into the chasm. Onlookers rush to the scene, pulling the pair to safety.

Nearly 140 dolphins and other marine mammals have washed up dead on the shores of Russia's Black Sea coast over the past month, the dolphin rescue and research center Delfa said Tuesday.

"A total of 137 cetaceans died in the last month. This is a serious figure," Delfa wrote on the messaging app Telegram, referring to the group of aquatic mammals that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises.

"In the last week alone, we recorded 101 dolphin deaths. On March 31, we were informed about 26 deaths," the rescue center added.

Many of the animals showed signs of having been caught in fishing nets, including deep scratches, missing fins or tails, as well as torn stomachs. Some were entangled in ropes tied around rocks, which Delfa suggested may have been caused by fishermen trying to get rid of their bycatch.

An earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area on Friday morning, the US Geological Survey said, with residents reporting they felt rumbling across the eastern seaboard in what is a relatively rare event for the region.

The government agency reported a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, centered near Lebanon, New Jersey.

People reported feeling the quake in the states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, with the Weather Channel reporting that it was noticeable in Boston and residents in Philadelphia reporting they felt it, too. Tremors lasting for several seconds were felt more than 200 miles away near the New Hampshire border.

The fire department of New York said on Friday there were no initial reports of damage or injury. But city dwellers were shocked and a little shaken up by the unexpected event, during which people sitting at desks or at home in high rises felt their whole building shake mildly for several seconds.

The movement then passed but people were left jittery about aftershocks and busily checking in with friends and family, including children at school, briefly putting a high load onto cellphone networks, the city authorities reported.

The New York police department's deputy commissioner of operations, Kaz Daughtry, said in a statement: "While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we're still assessing the impact."

The UN security council was meeting at its headquarters in New York to discuss the situation in Gaza when the earthquake hit, shaking the building.

At least four people have died in the storm that brought nearly 2 feet of snow to higher New England elevations and winds gusting to 70-85 mph, knocking out power to over 600,000 customers.

A deadly late-season nor'easter that has hammered the Northeast and New England with drenching rain, heavy snow and gusty wind continues to pummel the region Friday.

Snow will continue at times for Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, but the worst of the weather should be on a downward trend by Saturday, the FOX Forecast Center said.

Tragically, two people lost their lives during the recent storm in Pennsylvania when trees fell onto their cars. One of the victims was an 82-year-old woman who was waiting at a stoplight in Collegeville on Wednesday when a tree fell and crushed her car.

A 70-year-old man was also killed when a tree fell onto his car in Aston Township late Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Another death was reported in New York when police say a tree fell onto a car on Route 128 in Armonk, killing the driver. Police said the driver was the only person in the car then and was later identified as the wife of a New York Yankees front office executive.

Flash flooding continued to ravage Jakarta until 4 a.m. local time on Thursday, affecting residents in 40 neighborhood units (RTs), according to the metropolitan city's Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The flooding, caused by downpour in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon and the overflowing of several rivers in the city, also inundated five road sections, the agency's acting head Isnawa Adji stated here on Thursday.

The floodwaters, reached heights of between 35 and 175 centimeters, while several affected neighborhood units are located in the sub-districts of Kedoya Selatan, Kembangan Selatan, Pela Mampang, Pejaten Timur, and Ragunan.

He said the residents of three neighborhood areas in Kampung Melayu Sub-district continued to experience the inundation of floodwaters reaching 175 centimeters in height.

Heavy rainfall and the overflowing of Ciliwung River also triggered the inundation of flash floods, reaching 140-170 centimeters in height, in five neighborhood units in Cawang Sub-district, he added.
