Several ski resorts in the Tahoe area, including Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Northstar California, reported receiving two feet of snow between Tuesday and Wednesdayand that's before the brunt of the storm hit.

The snow continued to pile up Wednesday night into Thursday morning, as the storm dumped wet, heavy 'Sierra cement' in the Tahoe basin.

The resorts started to boast about how much snow fell in their neck of the woods and the numbers were impressive all around. Sugar Bowl had received 15 inches of snow just overnight. Squaw Valley reported 28 inches of snow in the past 24 hours, Northstar had 26 inches, Kirkwood had 16 inches, and Heavenly had a foot. June Mountain Ski Area reported a 24-hour total of 36 inches at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Magnitude 6 quake jolts Nicobar Islands region

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6 hit the seismologically prone Andaman and Nicobar Islands Thursday, National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

There was no tsunami alert issued as sea levels around the Andaman Nicobar archipelago showed no major rise, said SPS Shenoi, Director INCOIS.

The earthquake hit the region at 8.43 am and its epicentre was Nicobar Islands region.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said.

Shallow 6.1-magnitude quake hits Bismarck Sea off Papua New Guinea

An earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude jolted Bismarck Sea near Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 3.3033 degrees south latitude and 146.3098 degrees east longitude.

Volcanologists have registered increased activity at the Shiveluch volcano since the start of December

Volcanologists have registered an eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Russia's Far East, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) told TASS on Thursday.

"The eruption of the Shiveluch volcano has started. Lava is coming down the slopes," KVERT said.

Volcanologists have registered increased activity at the Shiveluch volcano since the start of December. Over the last weeks, the volcano has been shooting colums of ash into the air almost every day. Scientists do not rule out that this may mean that a powerful eruption is about to happen.

The volcano is 3,283 m high. It last erupted in 2010.

A volcano erupted on a remote island in southern Japan on Thursday, the meteorological agency said, but the warning level was kept below the scale requiring evacuation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the volcano on Kuchinoerabujima island, roughly 1,000 km (620 miles) southwest of Tokyo, erupted at 9:20 a.m. (0020 GMT). Live images showed thick black smoke billowing out of the mountain.

The eruption had released pyroclastic flows, or flows of super-heated ash and gas, Kyodo News said, but the flows had not reached residential areas.

A portion of a busy road in Delhi caved in, creating a huge sinkhole and trapping a car and an auto-rickshaw. The incident took place near the Maujpur-Babarpur Metro station on Monday evening.

Two people were in the car while the auto had one person. All the people were rescued soon after their vehicles got trapped in the sinkhole. The vehicles were later pulled out with the help of cranes.

The pictures from the incident showed both the auto-rickshaw and the car in the pit. A large crowd had gathered around the sinkhole after the incident.

Two pit bull terriers kill 5-year-old girl in South Africa

PIT BULL ATTACK
Two pit bull terriers have been put down after they attacked and killed a 5-year-old girl from White River in Mpumalanga on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack happened around 17:00 at the home of a local crèche teacher in Sederberg Street, Whiteriver.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Cynthia Mbokodo, the girl was attacked by two pit bull terriers moments after she got out of her teacher's car.

"The girl was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The child had numerous serious bite and tear wounds on her body."


A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the police.
