Unusually wild, wintry weather hits Western Australia

A severe weather warning has been issued for the Kimberley region of Western Australia with a tropical low (pictured) expected to form into a cyclone off the north coast on Thursday
A dose of wild, wintry weather has struck WA's south-west as it brims with holidaymakers hoping to make the most of the region's idyllic beaches and campsites.

After a string of typical summer days in the region, a developing low pressure system is bringing a cool change, heavy rain and damaging winds, with gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour possible today.

"This weather is very unusual for this time of year," Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Adam Conroy said.

"It's more typical of a strong winter storm, so it's pretty rare to get one of these systems developing in January.

"This sort of weather will be quite wintry and windy, so given that a lot of people would be out having their summer holidays it's important that they listen to the warnings."

More than 20 decomposing horses were discovered at a dried-up pool in northern Australia.
Dozens of wild horses have been found dead in Australia amid an extreme heatwave in the region.

More than 20 decomposing horses were discovered at a dried-up pool, known as "Deep Hole", 56 miles east of Alice Springs, a remote town in Australia's Northern Territory.

Pictures published on Facebook showed the dead animals strewn on the scorched ground, covered in dust and branches.

In a Facebook post, Alice Springs residents said that the horses "are likely to have perished from dehydration accompanied by the overwhelming heat".

The Popocatepetl volcano registered a strong explosion Tuesday evening in the states of Puebla and Morelos, in central Mexico, according to Mexico's civil protection authority.

The explosion caused lava and ashes to spew, with a smoke plume almost two miles high emanating from the volcano's dome.

Authorities have asked locals to remain in their homes.

No initial reports of damages or injuries have been reported.

Authorities say thousands of migrating birds have died at California's Salton Sea this month from avian cholera.

The California Department of Fish and Game says ducks, gulls and other birds were found dead at the south end of the state's largest lake between Jan. 8 and last Thursday.

Testing showed signs of avian cholera, an infectious bacterial disease. It's spread through direct contact or from contaminated food or water.

Wildlife officials say outbreaks occur annually as a result of birds flocking closely together during migration.

The 350-square-mile (560-square-kilometer) lake is located in the desert near the Mexican border. It's a regular stop for migrating birds.

Roads turned white as a rare hailstorm hit the provincial capital and its surrounding areas on Tuesday night.

Giving parts of the provincial capital the feel of a hill station, the hailstorm further added to the prevailing chilly conditions.

While people watched the freak turn of weather with a pleasant surprise, motorists were seen rushing to cover as hailstones the size of small strawberries started meteoring down the sky.

Besides Lahore, adjoining Sheikhupura and the M2 motorway near Kalar Kahar also received heavy hail.

Squaw Valley, looking squeaky clean after 6 feet (1.8m) fell there in the last week. Snowfall is already well above average in the Sierras and there’s more to come Sunday and early Monday.
Thanks to Mother Nature's onslaught of recent storms, skiers and snowboarders near Lake Tahoe are shredding across several feet of fresh snow.

Storms that rolled across the Sierra Nevada over the past week dumped nearly 8 feet of snow at Squaw Valley and multiple feet of powder at a host of other nearby resorts.

Rare waterspout reported in Pakistani waters

A WWF-Pakistan trained fisherman operating in the offshore waters of Pakistan reported the occurrence of a waterspout on 21 January 2019.

This rare weather phenomenon was reported by Captain Saeed Zaman who was fishing for tuna about 57 nautical miles from the coastline in offshore waters at Ghora Bari, Sindh coast. He recorded this spectacular waterspout which looked similar to a tornado. This rare weather phenomenon was previously reported by fishermen on 28 February 2016 near Sakoni (off Kalmat Khor), Balochistan.

According to Saeed Zaman, this massive waterspout was coming towards his boat but he managed to move away from it. He shared that he observed a large patch of cloud on the morning of 22 January from which the waterspout could be seen descending. Other fishing boats operating in the area also observed this massive waterspout but they also avoided approaching it.

Contrary to its name, a waterspout is not filled with water but is a column of cloud-filled wind rotating over the ocean's surface. It descends from a cumulus cloud and the water inside a waterspout is formed by condensation in the cloud.

An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 jolted Prince Edward Islands region at 19:01:43 GMT on Tuesday, Trend reports citing Xinhua.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 43.0778 degrees south latitude and 42.2262 degrees east longitude.
