The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Unit says the tremor was recorded at 1:23 am (local time) at a latitude of 17.48 N, longitude of 61.20 W at depth of 10 km.
"It's the strongest I ever felt. I thought it was my dogs under the bed. It was strong," said former Miss St Kitts, Sudeakka Francis, in a post on her Facebook page.
The centre of the quake was located 83 km north-east of St John's, Antigua; 141 km north-north-east of Point-Pitre, Guadeloupe and 171 km east of Basseterre.

St. Petersburg authorities have asked lay people to support migrating birds suffering a lack of food, writes Alexey Parkhomenko. The temperature anomaly there is -5-7 degrees C (9 to 12.5F) below normal.
"In the Moscow Region, where I live, the temperature this morning has been below freezing, with some snow and strong NW wind."
The Smolny Committee on Nature Management, which asked residents and city visitors for help, said the unexpected snow that came to replace the spring heat caught the birds unawares.

The seven-story building in mountainous Maoping Township of Baihe County collapsed in the landslide at 11:58 a.m. Monday, according to the local government. Rainstorms pounded the area over the weekend.
The building was home to 39 people in 11 households. An initial investigation estimated that eight people were missing.
Late Monday, a 60-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble. The woman, whose condition is stable, was taken to a local hospital.
The local government later confirmed that another resident was actually not in the building when the accident happened.
More than 250 police officers, fire fighters, medical workers and volunteers are continuing the search, overseen by Vice Governor Zhuang Changxing at the site.
A serious snowfall blanketed central and northern Saskatchewan with snow this weekend.
Over four days, Lloydminster was hit with 42 centimetres of snow. Buffalo Narrows and La Ronge received around 20 centimetres, while Flin Flon received 28 centimetres.
The snow created icy road conditions and poor visibility.
Despite warm temperatures, Environment Canada believes the snow will be around for the next several days.
"We can still see the band of snow on satellite imagery," said weather specialist Mark Melsness. "There's still a bright band of white left on the ground."
The province's Water Security Agency is monitoring the situation. For now, the agency said it is not concerned about flooding caused by the sudden snow dump.

Jason Small of the Canadian Red Cross says 107 people from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation are being temporarily housed in hotels in The Pas about 500 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
He says another 325 people were evacuated from their homes earlier this month from five other First Nations.
Manitoba forecasters issued a flood warning on the weekend for some areas affected by ice jams on the Carrot and Saskatchewan rivers.
The province says water levels were going down in some rivers until storms dumped about 25 millimetres of precipitation on the weekend.
Small says the evacuees are being provided with lodging, food and other living expenses.
Mid-winter conditions have returned - probably briefly - to resorts like the Arlberg region's Lech (pictured above and below this afternoon) and St Anton where the ski season still has a fortnight left to run.
Although more than half of the northern hemisphere's ski areas had closed for the season by yesterday evening (Easter Sunday), some did see fresh snow on closing day after a largely warm and Sunny spring to date.
The snow has also fallen at glacier resorts open later in to May like Switzerland's Engelberg and Austria's Molltal Glacier.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services has said that a halo which is currently visible around the sun, is not an unusual occurrence.
Meteorologist Thomas Auguste told the Times that the phenomenon is associated with high tide Cirrostratus clouds."As long as those types of clouds are around you will continue to see the halo," Auguste said.
He explained that the situation should persist for the next 24 hours with the halo being visible during the day but not in the night. According to Auguste, the halo is visible because of the sun being reflected through the high clouds.

Kent County dispatchers say they've received nearly two dozen calls reporting a loud explosion-type sound. Police have been searching the area, but were unable to determine the source of the noise.
Reports of the situation began coming into the 24 Hour News 8 newsroom around 8:30 p.m Saturday.
"There was just a loud explosion sound in Grandville and we felt the earth shake," one viewer wrote on Facebook. "Sounded like a bomb going off!!" said another post.
Emergency responders remain perplexed as to what caused the sound.
