Floods causing emergencies in a third of Colombia's provinces

Flooding in Colombia

Flooding in Colombia
Exceptionally heavy rains have forced one third of Colombia's governors to declare either an orange or red alert as cities are flooding and increased rain is expected.

This year's first rainy season coincides with La Niña, a recurring Pacific weather phenomenon that causes increased rainfall in Colombia and neighboring South American countries.

In April, hundreds of people died in the cities of Mocoa and Manizales and left the cities devastated after the rains caused the fatal floods, avalanches and mudslides. Since then, the rains have continued to fall.

On Saturday evening, the central Meta department became the 11th province of 32 to declare an emergency.

On early Saturday morning, a number of the country's main rivers flooded, already causing emergencies in 10 other provinces.

John Boyle column: Sorry, but some dog breeds are dangerous

The Boerboel breed, which debuted at the 140th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in January, is a powerful dog bred over centuries for its size, muscularity and ability to protect farmsteads.

The Boerboel breed, which debuted at the 140th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in January, is a powerful dog bred over centuries for its size, muscularity and ability to protect farmsteads.
And here we go again.

A large, powerful type of dog — bred over centuries for its size, muscularity and ability to protect farmsteads — may have killed a person, and people are naturally outraged.

At anyone criticizing the breed.

Seriously. This time the dog in question was a Boerboel, a breed originating in South Africa that can weigh up to 200 pounds.

Bent Creek resident Jane Marie Egle died earlier this month, found bleeding and unresponsive with one of her Boerboels guarding her. Buncombe County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Natalie Bailey said Egle's wounds were consistent with an animal attack but an exact cause of death had not been determined. Egle owned six of the dogs and had a website offering Boerboel puppies for sale.

Snowflake Cold

Ice Age Cometh: Snow in Russia when it should be Spring?

A man walks in the street in Kazan, 20 April 2017.
The weather in Russia is a capricious lady. In the midst of the May holidays (May 6-9 in honor of Victory Day), many Russian cities experienced heavy snowfall—so instead of traditional shashlik (kebabs), social media were full of snowmen and snowy landscapes.

Some joked that it was because FC Spartak had just won the Russian soccer league for the first time since 2001—a huge surprise for everyone, including the gods in the sky. Others wrote that the Russian winter, a trusty ally of the Soviet army, had decided to take part in the Victory Parade. Still others congratulated each other on the forthcoming New Year.

The abundant snowfall in and around Moscow on the afternoon of May 8 was repeated two days later. According to forecasters, Moscow is approaching the record set in 1922, when more than 35 mm of precipitation fell in just a single day. Victory Day in Moscow was the chilliest since 1945. Meteorologists note that over the past 130 years the daytime temperature on May 9 had never previously dipped below +5°C. But this year saw temperatures in Moscow ranging from +3.6 to +4.6.

The snow must go on: May snow in the finest traditions of British rock group Queen.
