The Manam Island volcano has been active for the last two months but remained at peace until Tuesday when it exploded into action, belching thick smoke, plume, lava and fire in a spectacular show.

Dugulava ward seven councillor of Manam Island Paul Maburau told The National yesterday that it erupted at about 10pm and the islanders who had gone back there from the care centre at Bogia were afraid and calling for help constantly.

Maburau, who is in Bogia, said he had texted Madang Governor Peter Yama and Bogia MP Robert Naguri on the situation on the island and Naguri responded saying there would be help coming for the people.

"Our MP said he will arrange for fuel to bring our people to a safe area and we will move them if there is a huge eruption," he said.

At least 13 people, including 10 trekkers, have died at separate places in Uttarakhand after getting trapped due to snowfall in the mountainous region, officials said on Thursday. The dead include three porters working for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), posted along the India-China border in Uttarkashi district. Five people have been rescued while six remain missing.

One of the trekkers' groups went missing en route to Lamkhaga Pass near Harsil in Uttarkashi district, 230 km from Dehradun, on October 14. Of the nine porters accompanying them, six managed to return safely. They informed the authorities about the three missing porters and eight trekkers.

District disaster management officer (Uttarkashi) Devendra Patwal said the rescuers compromising State Disaster Response Force and air force personnel spotted five of the bodies near Lamkhaga Pass on Thursday morning. "The bodies will soon be airlifted from the spot," he said. "The rescue workers managed to rescue one of the trekkers who was found alive there. He has been shifted to the army hospital in the district." Seven of these eight missing trekkers were from West Bengal while one was from Delhi.

Two members of a family were killed after lightning struck them in West Bengal's Malda district, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place in Alal gram-panchayat area under the Gajol Police Station limits on Wednesday when the two were working in a paddy field, an officer said.

Manirujjaman (36) and his nephew Amir Hossain (14) died on the spot, he said. The bodies have been sent to Malda Medical College for post-mortem examinations, the officer added.

At least 11 cows were killed by lightning at the same time.

The incident is said to have happened at about 09:30 October 20, in a rice field in Boeung Tim village, Ta Pon commune, Sangke district, Battambang province.

The cows were killed by lightning as their owners chased them to graze together the fields while others while others were killed while tied up in the barn.

There was heavy thunderstorm in the early hours of Wednesday in some districts in Battambang province.

Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives reported on Sunday that over 5.33 million rai of agricultural areas several regions of Thailand have been affected by floods from September 1 to October 15.

5.33 million rai of plantation in 48 provinces have been affected by floods, while the total number of affected farmers is estimated at 463,615," said the ministry's Centre for Agricultural Disaster Mitigation. "Of these, 3.61 million rai is rice paddy, 1.67 million rai is crops fields, and 39,500 rai is fruit plantations and others. The ministry will provide an initial financial aid of Bt6,700 per affected household."

Fishery businesses in 38 provinces have also been affected by the floods with total damaged areas of over 57,000 rai, affecting about 40,900 farmers. The ministry will provide an initial financial aid of Bt22,272 per affected household in this group.

According to information gathered from sources, the two deceased were on the farm with five other people on Monday, October 18, 2021, when storms brought in heavy rains.

Around 15:30 when the thunderstorms became immense, it is reported that all seven farmhands run for shelter to ensure their safety.

Unfortunately, in the process, the two men yet to be identified were struck by lightning and sadly lost their lives instantly.

With a report filed to the Kpetoe District Police in the Volta region, the bodies of the deceased were conveyed from the farm and have been deposited at the morgue awaiting autopsy so it can be preserved and processed for burial.

Meanwhile, the police are conducting investigations into the matter to be sure the two indeed died from the strike of the lightning.

Giant hailstones have fallen north of Mackay in Queensland, damaging vehicles and structures.

The hail storm hit the Bloomsbury and Yalboroo areas on Tuesday afternoon, with locals reporting cricket ball sized stones and larger.

"That's some big ice falling down ... I'm gonna have some dints in the car after this" said one man in video he took after being caught in the storm at Yalboroo.

The State Emergency Service has responded to at least one call for assistance in Yalboroo.

The incident was part of a series of severe weather events hitting Queensland on Tuesday.

A new Australian hail record is believed to have been set after giant ice stones pelted Yalboroo, north of Mackay, on Tuesday afternoon, smashing windshields and drawing the attention of international weather watchers.

The Bureau of Meteorology said it had seen credible footage of hail measuring 16cm in diameter, which would top the previous record of 14cm set in Brisbane's southwestern suburbs about the same time last year.

"It's very impressive - obviously not for the residents underneath it - but some very impressive hail," senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said.

"We saw some photos of hail next to a tape measure, the team will be looking at that to see if we can verify it."


Social media was flooded with images of hailstones, some clearly bigger than an adult's hand.

"That's not hail. That's more like a glacier," Karen Gillick wrote on the Higgins Storm Chaser Facebook page.

Storms are expected to linger over the southeast and central Queensland coasts on Wednesday, with large to giant hail a possibility,

Elsewhere, showers are tipped for the Illawarra and a storm could hit Sydney.

A large weather front and low pressure system over Western Australia had winds of up to 108km an hour battering Rottnest Island and bringing heavy rain. The BoM said this was likely to move into South Australia, pushing hot and damaging winds across the state's north and western regions.

Severe to extreme heatwave conditions are expected to continue across the top end after several Northern Territory towns set October temperature records.

Tennant Creek soared to 42.4 degrees on Tuesday.

An elderly woman was mauled to death in a savage dog attack after her carer allegedly left her to wander off.

The carer in Italy is facing jail after she failed to notice that an 89-year-old woman she was supposed to be looking after had wandered out of her bed into a neighbour's garden.

Tragically, the woman was killed by two American Staffordshire Terriers in a vicious dog attack.

The carer only realised what had happened when police called about the attack on Carmen Gorzanelli, 89, in the town of Sassuolo in the province of Modena in Italy on October 12.

The news site Rai reported that the incident occurred after Carmen left her house alone and wandered around her neighbourhood before going into a garden just a few metres from her own house. It is believed that the elderly victim mixed up the two entrances.

Officials say a Grant County woman has died after she was severely injured by a dog bite.

The coroner reports that Kathleen Bertram, 69, was in the living room of a home in the 300 block of High Street in Matthews, holding her 3-year-old granddaughter.

Someone in another room heard screams.

According to Coroner Stephen Dorsey: "At that moment the pit-bull then attacked Kathleen, biting down on her neck."
