A man working in his garden in the Twin Brooks area of the borough was attacked Monday by a coyote that was then hunted down and euthanized, authorities said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment and then released for recovery at home, according to a report on the Saddle River Police Department's Facebook page.

The man was attacked from behind by the animal and managed to escape, the police report said.

Officers who investigated the incident learned that the same coyote had attacked a neighbor's dog last week, requiring the dog's owner to have it treated at a veterinarian's office, police said.

In addition, the police report said, workers in the area reported having seen the coyote several times on Monday, acting aggressively toward other dogs.

A South City woman fell into a sink hole in front of her house a month after reporting it to the city.
Nearly a week after a south St. Louis woman reported falling into a sinkhole to the city, she's wondering why it's still there.

So she contacted Five on Your Side's Mike Rush.

Other than a pinky finger, 63-year-old June LaBarbera has gone all her life without a broken bone. Until now.

"The humerus bone goes up here... is broken from that collar bone up there," LaBarbera points out.

Her bone and her record were broken by a hole about a foot across and three feet deep that developed in her front yard at the curb on Odell Street.

Eurasian shorebird (wader) turns up far inland near Winslow, Indiana

Indiana birdwatcher John Kendall took this photo of a black-tailed godwit on Saturday in Gibson County.
It was Friday morning, and Jeremy Ross needed to head to home to help with the kids.

But Ross, newly initiated into the world of bird watching, couldn't resist a few more minutes looking through his spotting scope.

He'd hoped to spot some of the long-beaked shorebirds that often stop in Indiana during their spring migration to feed in fields along Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge.

He was driving down a bumpy, muddy dirt road near Francisco in Gibson County when he spotted a bird that just didn't look right.

"I got the binoculars out and watched it land," Ross said. "It was real pretty. But with the black and white and orange, I thought 'That's just not normal. I don't know what this is, but it isn't normal.' "

Ross had spotted a black-tailed godwit, a gull-sized shorebird native to Europe and Asia. Ross' find has made the middle- and high-school arts teacher a celebrity of sorts among birdwatchers. After all, they might spend a lifetime tallying birds and never find one so rare.

"We have reports of heavy damage in some areas of the state already, but the threat of thunderstorms and further flooding has not cleared Kentucky yet," Beshear said. "By declaring a state of emergency for the entire state, we can deploy any needed state assistance, such as National Guard troops, without delay."

A man sustained several injuries this morning when his Nissan Champ Bakkie fell into a sink hole on Voortrekker Road and Quality Street in Durban.

Shortly before 06:00 paramedics were dispatched to the incident. When they arrived on the scene they found the bakkie with only its rear on the tarmac. Bystanders pointed paramedics into the direction of where a man was standing. The driver of the vehicle managed to get out of his vehicle before paramedics arrived on the scene.

It is understood that the man was on his way to work when his vehicle fell into the hole. According to bystanders on the scene the sink hole developed late yesterday afternoon and was not properly cordoned off. It appeared as if it filled with water during the night making it difficult to see.

Comment: Sinkholes have been making life miserable for drivers across the world:
  • Sinkhole shuts down Roanoke City roadway in Virginia
  • Car crashes into sinkhole in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Highway shut down after sinkhole opens up in northern Alberta
  • Truck becomes stuck in sinkhole in Bronx

And it seems that there have been more than 60 sinkholes, covered by SOTT, in just the past month:

Rare sighting as American ducks are blown off course to Standlake
Birdwatchers in Standlake Common were astonished at an "extremely rare" sighting of four birds from North America.

Keen twitcher Dave Doherty first spotted the four ring-necked ducks resting in pit 60 at the nature reserve at about 7am on Saturday.

Fellow birdwatcher 39-year-old Dave Morgan, 39, found out about the discovery and rushed to see them.

He said: "To see four of these birds together, so far inland, is extremely rare.

"I saw three of these birds together once before, but that was on the Isle of Scilly."

Mr Morgan added the birds were about two or three years old and could have been blown off course in recent storms.

Dramatic footage of cars, trucks and whole buildings being washed away in muddy water has emerged online after thunderstorms and abnormal rainfall in Chile's desert Atacama region caused the Copiapo River to break its banks last week.

At least 25 people were killed and 125 others are missing as the floods ravaged the area known as one of the driest places on Earth.

Comment: This is becoming a pattern for this region.
