Lightning strike kills 2 teenagers in Pangasinan, Philippines

Two teenagers, stranded due to the pandemic, died Tuesday after being struck by lightning while playing and taking a shower in the rain, authorities said.

Maria Veronica Ligtasy, 16 years old, resident of Barangay 149 Raxa Bago Street, Tondo, Manila and Marilyn Rutur, 15 years old, resident of Block 96, Lot 6 Kawal Purok 4, Dagatdagatan, Caloocan City were pronounced dead on arrival when rushed to the Mapandan Community Hospital in Mapandan, Pangasinan.

Both were reportedly staying with relatives in Barangay Aseda as they were stranded during the lockdown. Being minors, the two were not allowed to travel during the duration of the lockdown.

Areas of north-western Greece were covered in snow on Tuesday, as severe weather, bringing thunder, lightning and heavy rain slammed into several other regions of the country.

Heavy snowfall at the the region of Zagori, near Ioannina, turned the landscape wintery. According to residents of the area, the snow reached 10cm while temperatures dropped to 2°C.

Roads were covered in snow and driving conditions were particularly difficult.

Dangerous driving conditions due to consistent snowfall in the Eastern Cape has forced provincial transport authorities to close parts of major roads in the province.

Transport department spokesperson Khusela Rantjie announced on Tuesday night that the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg, and the R61 between Cradock and the N9 would be closed off with immediate effect.

This comes as the SA Weather Service in Port Elizabeth warned of disruptive snowfalls on high grounds of the Eastern Cape on Tuesday night.

Lightning kills woman on Skopelos, Greece

A woman died on the western Aegean island of Skopelos after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm early on Tuesday afternoon.

The woman was struck by a bolt of lightning while working on a farm with her husband, who subsequently alerted the authorities.

The development came as a wet front swept across much of the country, bringing heavy rainfall and hailstorms in parts.

Powerful 6.1 earthquake hits off Vanuatu Coast

The nation in located in a region that is part of the Pacific Ocean basin's "Ring of Fire", notorious for its earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Vanuatu some 80 kilometres northwest of the capital Port-Vila, the United State Geological Survey said on Wednesday. The seismic activity was registered at a depth of 10 kilometres at 7:09 a.m. UTC, the USGS added. There are no reports of casualties or damage caused by the tremor. No tsunami alert was issued by the authorities.
