The great American eclipse may make animals act strangely

It's not just humans who will be affected by the Great American Eclipse coming on Aug. 21 - expect animals to act strangely too.

Anecdotal evidence and a few scientific studies suggest that as the moon moves briefly between the sun and the Earth, causing a deep twilight to fall across the land, large swaths of the animal kingdom will alter their behavior.

Eclipse chasers say they have seen songbirds go quiet, large farm animals lie down, crickets start to chirp and chickens begin to roost.

Elise Ricard, public programs supervisor at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, recalled the eerie silence that accompanied the start of a total eclipse early on a June morning in 2012.

The ground around the Yellowstone supervolcano has deformed after 1,500 quakes this summer

This activity is typically linked to changes in magma and gases deep beneath the surface – but for now, the experts say there’s no cause for worry. The Grand Prismatic hot spring (pictured, stock image) is among the park's many hydrothermal features created by the supervolcano.
As small earthquakes continue to rumble around the Yellowstone supervolcano in Wyoming, scientists have revealed new evidence of the changes going on beneath the ground.

A new map from the US Geological Survey shows how the ground around the Yellowstone caldera has deformed over the span of two years, as the quakes release uplift-causing pressure, allowing the ground to sink back down.

This activity is typically linked to changes in magma and gases deep below the surface - but for now, the experts say there's no cause for worry.

The map, created by USGS geophysicist Chuck Wicks uses data from June 2015 and July 2017 to show how the region around Yellowstone has changed.

In the map, the colourful rings show the changes in the ground's elevation as seen by a radar satellite, according to USGS.

A bulls-eye shaped section of uplift can be seen at the Norris Geyser Basin, where the ground has risen roughly 3 inches.

Earth's volcanoes re-awaken

With the massive eruption at Bogoslov Volcano in the Aleutian chain near Alaska, air travel was restricted and still remains "hazardous". Something similar happened in 2010 when air travel was restricted over Europe and an Icelandic volcano erupted. Now Steam vents are opening through the Greenland ice sheet and Katla is on yellow elevated warning with over 500 small quakes with a 50-50 chance of an eruption. This uptick in volcanic activity was predicted to go hand in hand with the intensification of the grand solar minimum. Here we go, ramp up from here.

The Klyuchevskoi Volcano in Kamchatka, Eurasia's highest active volcano, spewed a column of ash rising to 8 kilometers, the Kamchatka department of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said on Friday.

"A column of ash above the Klyuchevskoi Volcano rose to eight kilometers above the sea level today," a spokesman for the service said.

According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry's Kamchatka department, winds carried the plumes of ash away from nearby settlements.

The 4,750-meter-tall (15,580-feet) volcano is located in the Kamchatka Peninsula's Ust-Kamchatka District. There are no international airplane routes in the Klyuchevskoye volcano area.

Pavel Tordaj, 42, a farmer, shows corn damaged by drought as he stands inside his field of corn in Padina, Serbia, Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017.
Evidence is piling up that this year's sizzling summer in central and southeastern Europe has decimated crops, drained rivers and hurt the animal world.

As the drought's costs become clearer, temperatures in Serbia, Romania, Hungary and Croatia soared to nearly 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) again on Thursday following a few days of moderately less oppressive heat.

The region is enduring one of the hottest and driest summers in years, during which several people have died and dozens of wildfires have flared. The drought has also ratcheted up demand for water and electricity.

Serbia has been one of the hardest hit countries, with experts saying an estimated 60 percent of corn crops destroyed. The ministry of ecology also says water levels across the country have dropped drastically, threatening fish stocks.

Strange noises in the sky heard in Northern Territory, Australia

Went outside for a smoke and heard the noises, similar to those on many other YouTube uploads from all over the world.

The sound changed in volume, sometimes stopping for a period then starting again. It would be loud(ish) one minute and then grow distant, then get louder again, over a period of around 15 mins that I noticed.

A 50-year-old farmer was killed by a tiger in Sungarhi area of Pilibhit on Thursday morning, becoming the seventh victim in the district in just over three months and the third in four days. Kunwar Sen, a resident of Behari village, was working at his cane field when he was attacked by a tiger at around 10 am, said Sungarhi SHO Mohammad Kasim.

He said Sen's 22-year-old son Girish was with him when the attack happened, but the tiger had fatally injured the farmer on his neck and then escaped. Adarsh Kumar, Pilibhit Divisional Forest Officer (Social Forestry), said the spot where Sen was killed is about eight kilometres away from the place where another farmer, Shamsul Rahman Malik, was killed on Tuesday, and Mohammad Tasleem was killed on Monday.

"There is a possibility that this could have been done by the same tiger. We have formed six teams to track the tiger and they have been moving in the fields everyday to trace and tranquilise it. But their time is often wasted by villagers who insist they have seen the tiger in areas where the animal is not present. There is fear and anger among the people," he said.
