Located in the south-western Mexican state of Colima, the Fire Volcano has been exhibiting activity since 9 July. Over the past months, nearby villages have been blanketed with thick coats of ash, prompting evacuations.
Officially known as the Colima Volcano, it was previously active in January and February of 2015 and is part of the Pacific's Ring of Fire. Mexico contains more than 3,000 volcanos but only 14 are considered active.
Major eruptions have included the 1953 eruption of the Paricutin Volcano in Michoacan, the 1982 eruption of Tacana Volcano in Chiapas and the 1986 eruption of the Colima Volcano.
The Colima Volcano has erupted more than 40 times since the 16th century and local authorities have an emergency plan that includes continuous observation of the volcano and mandatory evacuations, if needed.

Locals first spotted the bear on a parking lot near a sporting arena called Erofey late in the evening. By the time the police had arrived the bear had already moved to a shopping mall nearby.
The police managed to shoo the scared animal out of the shops, but the bear made a run straight to a local kindergarten and was shot at the scene.
The head of the state hunting monitoring agency, Andrey Mamayev, estimated that the bear was young, about one year old, and had probably just started living without his mother.
"We can conclude that the inexperienced bear decided to swim across the Amur River in search of a den," Mamaev added.
This could be the case as brown bears hibernate through winter, so the young male could have been looking for a suitable spot. Or he might have been hungry.
Because brown bears have an enormous food palate - they will try anything and eat anything if it's accessible - they are often attracted to human-created food sources. They usually opt for meals that are easily obtained though. Not worth a marathon swim like what the bear in question had to supposedly go through. The Amur's width near where the bear was first spotted is 1.16 km.
Brown bears are known to attack humans, they are large animals that can weigh up to 680kg and commonly live to 25 years in the wild.
El Niño is defined by above-normal sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Occurring every two to five years, El Niño's most significant effects on North America occur during the wintertime.
However, the resulting weather varies depending on where the warm water temperatures are centered.
"Confidence continues to grow that this El Niño will be one of the strongest El Niños over the past 50 years," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Anderson.
Comment: According to this report from the NOAA, the 1997/98 El Niño, was one of the most significant climatic events of the century, and produced extreme weather worldwide. During this El Niño, temperature and precipitation records were broken across the United States. Many areas suffered heavy flooding, and the U.S. experienced a series of severe tornadoes. Elsewhere around the world, El Niño contributed to major droughts and wildfire in Mexico, Indonesia and Brazil; devastating floods in South America; and massive coral bleaching from Panama to Africa to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
