Evacuations after floods in Yamagata, Japan - 8 inches of rain in 24 hours

More torrential rain has caused flooding and mudslides in Japan following the disaster in southern prefectures that left over 50 dead or missing earlier this month.

Heavy rain has been falling in northern area of the country since 27 July. Several locations in Yamagata recorded more than 200mm of rain in 24 hours on 28 July, including Tsuruoka, Nishimura, Oguni and Nagai, according to Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Okura village in Yamagata recorded 95.5 mm of rain in 3 hours on 28 July, triggering landslides and rivers to overflow. As many as 540 people were left isolated due to landslides in the area, according to a government spokesman.

Julie Dimperio Holowach was laughing as she and her daughter paddled into the water Monday off the coast of Maine's Bailey Island.

Suddenly Holowach, who was wearing a black wetsuit, started flailing, witness Tom Whyte told The Boston Globe. Her daughter swam back to shore, dropped to her knees and screamed for help, he said.

Nearby kayakers brought Holowach's badly injured body to shore. By the time paramedics arrived, the 63-year-old seasonal resident from New York City was already dead, killed in the first fatal shark attack in Maine's history.

Some researchers say the waters around Maine have more white sharks than they used to, as the predators go in search of seal meat.

Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) are supposed to be electric blue. This past weekend in Sweden, photographer P-M Hedén saw a different color: Dark Red. "My 17 year-old son was out with friends and he texted me the message 'Noctilucent!' I looked out and didn't really understand what I saw. The tops of the clouds were red."

Hedén hopped in his car and drove to a clear site for a better look. The movie he made, above, shows the dynamics of the clouds and the development of their amber crown. "This all happened around local midnight," he says.

NLCs are Earth's highest clouds. Seeded by meteoroids, they float at the edge of space 83 km above the ground. Hedén's video shows ordinary clouds scudding dark and low across the Swedish landscape. NLCs float high overhead, catching the rays of the sun, which is still "up" at their extremely high altitude.

Coastal towns ravaged by unrelenting bushfires just six months ago are now suffering severe floods after days of wild weather.

A low pressure system off Australia's east coast brought 120km/h winds overnight and dumped more than 180mm of rain across several areas of New South Wales.

Dramatic pictures captured the extent of severe flooding, which forced some residents to evacuate and left about 14,500 homes and businesses without power.

The towns in Shoalhaven, on the NSW south coast, had only just began recovering from the bushfires, which left hundreds homeless.

'It's been a shocker. It's terrible we have to go through this all over again,' Shoalhaven City Mayor Amanda Findley told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday.

'This is actually our second flood since the bushfires.

The last remnants of winter are finally gone from Paradise Ranger Station with the official "snow melt out" being declared last week on July 21.

The snowpack is considered gone when less than 2 inches of water equivalent snow are observed at the weather station, which sits at 5,400 feet along Mt. Rainier National Park.

The July 21 meltout is later than the typical date of July 11th, though the past 40 years the average meltout date was around July 13th, according to research meteorologist Mark Albright.

The snow has melted out as early as May 24th in 1941 (and it was May 27 in the ultra mild winter of 2015) and as late as August 25th in 1974.

Long range forecasts are trending toward a possible La Nina winter which would give high odds of an above-normal snowpack and that the snow will hang out at Paradise next summer beyond its usual meltout date as well.

About 36 people are reported to have died after torrential rain triggered flash floods and urban flooding in Pakistan.

An emergency has been imposed at hospitals across Karachi, where paramilitary forces are helping traffic police in rescuing commuters amid traffic jams, flooding of roads and destruction of infrastructure.

"We were stuck in homes this Sunday as people shared videos of motorcycles and even cars being swept away in strong floods. Several people were injured by tiles falling from high buildings," Mansha Noor, executive secretary of Caritas Pakistan Karachi, told UCA News.

"The frontline volunteers of our disaster management committees (DMCs) continued rescue efforts during heavy rains and helped in saving people and their belongings in low-lying areas."

Two brothers killed in lightning strike in Chhattisgarh, India

Two brothers were killed when they were struck by lightning in a village in Chhattisgarhs Jashpur district on Tuesday, police said.

The incident took place around 11 am when the victims, identified as Janku Sai (29) and his brother Janak Sai (25), were sowing paddy saplings in their field in Dumariya village under the Farsabahar police station area, a local police official said.

While they were working in the field, heavy rainfall started following which they took shelter under a nearby tree where lightning struck, killing the duo on the spot, he said.

A case has been registered and compensation will be provided to the family of the deceased as per government norms, the official added.

A women's soccer league match in Mexico ended in tragedy as two players were killed by lightning, while three others required treatment for severe burns and other injuries.

The game, which took place in Mexico's Tlahuac municipality on Monday, was interrupted by heavy rainfall after halftime.

The players were ordered to leave the field, but five footballers returned to retrieve the ball. Tragically, lightning struck the pitch just as they stepped onto the grass.

The five women were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where two of them died. The three others suffered second-degree burns, and were reported to be in a stable condition.

At least 11 people died and four others injured in lightning strikes in West Bengal's Bankura, Purba Bardhaman and Howrah districts on Monday, as thunderstorms affected parts of the southern areas of the state, official sources said.

Five people each died in Bankura and Purba Bardhaman, and one person in Howrah district.

In Bankura, two persons, including a woman, died in Onda and Bankura Sadar police station areas when lightning struck the fields where they were working, sources said.

Two others also died in Onda area, and another one in Gangajalghati.
