Australia has experienced its wettest January-August since 2011, laying the platform for 2024 to become our fifth consecutive year with above-average rain — and potentially among the dampest ever.
While September is on average our driest month, the current spell of wet weather will continue this weekend as twin cloud bands deliver further rain to southern states.
Heavy falls and flooding are possible on the NSW north coast, the crescendo of an unseasonable north-west cloudband that brought rain to the majority of the country this week, including record falls in parts of WA and the NT.
Thankfully, the AFL Grand Final appears set to be played in good conditions — after a sunny and warm day today in Melbourne, a second rainband will arrive across south-eastern states by Sunday, while a third band of rain is possible next week.
A massive sinkhole emerged in Japan's Hiroshima city, forcing locals to evacuate and affecting nearby infrastructure, according to public broadcaster NHK.
The sinkhole measured some 40 metres long and 15 meters wide after a water pipe burst near an intersection at the site, NHK reported. Residents were temporarily evacuated after eight buildings began to lean and crack.
Hiroshima city officials said the sinkhole emerged when workers carried out underground drilling works to build a storm drain.
Hong Kong Observatory says waterspout seen swirling across the harbour at 12.30pm
A waterspout was spotted over Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour for the first time since records began, the Observatory said on Saturday.
The weather forecaster, which had warned that violent gusts might sweep the city, said at 1pm the waterspout was seen swirling across the harbour, from east to west, 30 minutes earlier.
It was the first time a waterspout - a rapidly rotating column of water - had been reported in the harbour since records began in 1959, the Observatory said.
According to clips circulating online, the waterspout formed in the sea near residential estate Laguna Verde Ocean in Hung Hom.
It then grew vertically and moved swiftly to the west. It dwindled and subsequently vanished several minutes after hitting a wall at the outdoor Tai Wan Shan Swimming Pool.

The removal of a dead whale found on a beach in Hartlepool earlier this week has been described as a “complex operation” that requires a “specialist company.”
The whale was first spotted on the Headland, in Hartlepool, on Sunday, September 22, and experts believe it to be a Minke, the smallest of all baleen whales.
Hartlepool Borough Council has been working with a number of organisations to find a safe way to remove the whale from the beach.
A spokesperson for the council said: "The council has been working with a number of partner organisations over the last few days to secure the safe removal of the dead whale from a beach on the Headland.
"Due to the sheer size of the whale and its location, this will be a complex operation that requires a specialist company.
"This is likely to take a number of days and in the meantime we would ask that people stay away from the whale's body."
A projected position of the polar vortex for Winter 2024-25
A look at the very latest Winter 2024/2025 forecast data shows the growing influence of a weak La Niña phase. Seasonal prediction systems are slowly aligning and starting to point to a specific weather scenario for the upcoming Winter season, but past forecasts issued in September were often too warm over the United States.
The global weather system has many large-scale and small-scale driving factors. The main factor this year will be a weak La Niña event in the Pacific, but we also expect the Polar Vortex to play a larger role in mid-Winter.
Cold La Nina growing
La Niña is a cold phase of the large and powerful oceanic ENSO oscillation. It is a region of the tropical Pacific Ocean that shifts between cold and warm phases. The cold ENSO phase is called La Niña, and the warm phase is called El Niño.
These ocean temperature anomalies (warmer or colder) occur in specific regions of the Pacific Ocean, as shown in the image below. The main region is 3.4 and is also the main area where we determine what phase is active and how strong it is.

I consider the prime mission of the ideal American commonwealth to be the perfection of the Aryan genius for political civilization. We must preserve our Aryan nationality in the state, and admit to its membership only such non-Aryan race-elements as shall have become Aryanized in spirit and in genius by contact with it.
