Heavy rain in Colombo, Sri Lanka creates massive flooding

Continuous rains in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo have created flood-like conditions. Due to four days of rain, many areas of Colombo were submerged on Sunday. Super-4 matches are to be held there from Saturday. Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is thinking about changing the schedule of Super-4.

If the situation remains similar in Colombo then this match can be shifted to Pallekele Stadium in Dambulla or Kandy. However, the league match played between India and Pakistan in Pallekele on Saturday was also canceled due to rain. It was drizzling here the whole day even on Sunday. The match between India and Nepal on Monday in this stadium is also under the shadow of rain.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service and the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) issued a stern warning for the region, which proved prescient as heavy precipitation led to widespread floods and destruction in Samsun and Giresun on Sept. 3.

In Samsun, the deluge caused extensive flooding, inundating homes and businesses. Atatürk Boulevard, a major thoroughfare, transformed into a lake, necessitating the closure of the road to all transportation. Stranded vehicles and distressed citizens added to the chaos.

August was a frigid month across the bottom of the world, particularly at Russia's research station Vostok.

The preliminary monthly average for August 2023 at Vostok Station has come in at -71.2C (-96.2F).

This makes for the coldest August since 2002, -71.5C (-96.7F), and also the coldest month since July 2016, -71.8C (-97.2F).

Vostok's chill has now spilled into September, too.

On Friday, Sept 1 an anomalous minimum of -77.9C (108.2F) was reached.

Note, this reading likely won't represent the true daily minimum. At 12Z the temperature was -77.8C (chart below). It was almost certainly colder earlier but due to a quirk of the Russian algorithm, extremes are only documented during the second half of the day.
