2015 Christmas chaos: Extreme weather rages across the planet

2015 Xmas chaos
© The Extinction Protocol
It's been anything but a Merry Christmas for the world, as far as Mother Nature is concerned. Nature is on a rampage and nearly everyone is feeling some degree of her wrath: flooding across the UK, torrential rains and flooding across a large swathe of South America, a searing heat-wave in Australia, raging wildfires in Southern California, the worst El Niño pattern seen in 15 years, unseasonably high temperatures throughout much of the US, storms in the US Southeast, a historic blizzard threatening the Texas panhandle, and 11 people dead from an outbreak of tornadoes that ripped through the Dallas area. All of this is indicative of a planet painfully reeling from the frightening fact that geologic and atmospheric change is pushing its climate to new extremes. Climate extremes are just one harbinger or omen of greater cataclysms to come, like one of the ill-fated riders of the apocalypse heralding a message of impending doom. Today, as the year 2015 draws to a dramatic close, we stand on the eve of a crisis marshaling across the horizon that will have profound implications for all life on planet Earth. - TEP

Blizzard unfolds across New Mexico, southern High Plains

"The storm diving into New Mexico and Texas will not only bring snow, but also strong winds," AccuWeather Meteorologist Evan Duffey said. The combination of strong winds and heavy snow will continue to create blizzard conditions from Roswell, New Mexico, to Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas.
Blizzard map thru Sunday
"The worst of the blizzard will occur from eastern New Mexico to western Texas and the Oklahoma Panhandle, where white-out conditions will likely halt road travel and ground planes," Duffey said. Drivers are urged to never pass a snowplow as the road ahead could be extremely dangerous and covered in snow. Snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour at times. Visibilities may be measured in feet.

Over a foot of snow will fall from portions of eastern New Mexico into western Texas
. This storm will move into portions of the Oklahoma panhandle into southwestern Kansas into Sunday night with blizzard conditions.

For the second time this month, sky watchers around the Arctic Circle are reporting an outbreak of colorful polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs). Also known as "nacreous" or "mother of pearl" clouds, icy PSCs form in the lower stratosphere when temperatures drop to around minus 85ºC.

High-altitude sunlight shining through tiny ice particles ~10µm across produce the characteristic bright iridescent colors by diffraction and interference. Once thought to be mere curiosities, some PSCs are now known to be associated with the destruction of ozone.

One of Abernathy's neighbors came over to tell her about it and she was shocked when she saw the sinkhole.

"It's scary because of the kids, the dogs, you know, mainly the kids and my house," Abernathy said.

She has three kids and worries because they like to play outside often. She has warned them to stay away from the sinkhole until the problem is fixed.

Kanlaon volcano
Kanlaon Volcano in Negros spewed ash again on Sunday afternoon. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the eruption lasted for five minutes. It said the ash eruption started at 1:29 p.m. and ended at 1:34 p.m. Phivolcs said the gray ash spewed by Kanlaon was 3,281 feet.

The latest activity was accompanied by an "explosion type earthquake with rumbling sound," it added. In its bulletin on Kanlaon issued at 8 a.m., Phivolcs said it recorded six volcanic earthquakes from 8 a.m. of December 26 to 8 a.m. of December 27.

"Emission of moderate white steam plumes, 50 meters in height from the summit crater that drifted southwest, was observed," the bulletin added. Alert Level 1 remains raised over the volcano, which means it is in a period of unrest.

It said reminded concerned local government units in Negros that "entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions."

It added: "Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano's summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft."

Chopper 5 surveys the damage along Freeport Drive near Bobtown Road and Zion Road in Garland on Sunday, December 27, 2015.
Eleven people have died, including a young child, after severe storms spawned several tornadoes Saturday afternoon and evening in North Texas, officials say.

The full extent of damage in Texas isn't yet known, though it stretched over about a 40-mile-long area from 20 miles south of Dallas to northeast of the city. The storm blew the roofs off homes, mangled vehicles, damaged churches, downed power lines, toppled trees and caused natural gas lines to burst.

"Driving around the area, you can see that it's total devastation," Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said.
