Powerful explosions with loud detonations at Stromboli volcano, Italy

Strong explosion from Stromboli's NW vent (S1) and a moderate one from the eastern (N2) vent on 11 June 2017 evening

Strong explosion from Stromboli's NW vent (S1) and a moderate one from the eastern (N2) vent on 11 June 2017 evening
The activity of the volcano remains at moderate to high levels. Compared to the update a few days ago, activity at the eastern vents (N1, N2) has decreased a bit, but instead increased significantly from the westernmost vent (S1).

When observed last night, powerful strombolian explosions from this vent, often accompanied by loud detonations, often reached or even exceeded 200 m height, and occurred at intervals of 5-10 minutes.

In total, only 4 of the 5 vents previously observed were active; the second vent (S2) in the western crater area
was not observed yesterday. The central vent only had rare (every 1-2 hours) mild strombolian bursts, but showed frequent mild spattering and intense lava glow.

Activity at the eastern vents was similar as described earlier, but weaker and not as frequent any more (N2: eruptions every 15-20 minutes; N1: eruptions every 30-60 minutes). During some of the more powerful explosions, the western (S1) and eastern (N2) main vents erupted simultaneously.

The Keyraki mud volcano

The Keyraki mud volcano
The Keyraki mud volcano erupted around 07:00am local time.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the eruption lasted for 15 minutes and the mud covered an area of 3.5ha.

The depth of the erupted mud layer reached 3 meters within the crater and 0.2 to 0.3 meter around the crater.

The Keyraki mud volcano is situated 12km north of Baku. The eruption caused no damage to the nearby residential areas. However, there are several active mud volcanoes in the area and thus further eruptions cannot be ruled out.

Experts of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources are studying the consequences of the eruption.

The Keyraki mud volcano has erupted 18 times so far. Last time it had erupted in 2014.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 has struck near the coast of western Turkey and the Greek island of Lesbos, a European earthquake monitor said.

The epicentre of the quake was located some 84 km (52 miles) northwest of the Aegean coastal province of Izmir, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said on its website.

The Greek island of Lesbos has also been rattled.

Comment: This quake occurred at a depth of just 10 kilometres according to Earthquake Track, although another source has it even shallower at only 5 kms.

Sierra Nevadas in California get June snow storm

snowfall
Blue skies over soda Springs just after 4 p.m. Sunday gave way to light hail and then a steady dose of heavy snow for the next couple of hours.

In that time, about an inch and a half of snow stuck to cars and hillsides.

Travelers on Interstate 80 had to battle the elements on the road and the cold temperatures, which some were not expecting.

"We thought we might get some rain, even hail, but we didn't expect snow," says Tami Johnson as she headed back home to Reno.

A strong earthquake (gempa) with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 has struck off the Indonesian island of Java, centered southwest of Jakarta, Bogor, and Bandung. Only few details were immediately available.

The earthquake, which struck at 6:15 a.m. local time on Monday, was centered about 192 kilometers (119 miles) southwest of Bogor. It struck at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), making it a shallow earthquake.

Indonesia's seismological agency BMKG put the preliminary magnitude at 6.3, while the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude at 5.6. Many people across the western end of Java said the earthquake was strong enough to wake them up.

"Just laying on bed and shook hard enough to wake me up," one resident in Bogor told EMSC. Someone else in the city told the agency: "While at hospital, bed shock hard enough to wake me up."

More than 100,000 homes were without power Sunday morning after storms lashed central Minnesota and western Wisconsin with heavy rains, hail and strong winds.

Xcel Energy reports that the fast-moving storm, which felled trees and power lines in communities throughout central Minnesota, initially affected 132,000 households, most of which were in the Twin Cites metro and St. Cloud areas.

The utility company says more than 500 people were dispatched Sunday to repair outages, adding that by mid-day 45,000 households had their power restored. Still, around 88,000 households remain without power.

By 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Xcel reported nearly 131,000 customers had their power restored. Around 34,000 households were still without power as of Sunday night.

Xcel said some customers could be without power for multiple days.

The severe weather started overnight in the Dakotas before pushing east into central Minnesota, dumping heavy rain and up to tennis-ball-sized hail. Wind gusts whipped up to 70 mph.

SOTT Earth Changes Summary - May 2017: Extreme Weather, Planetary Upheaval, Meteor Fireballs

popacetl
In case you haven't noticed yet, the environment on our planet seems to be mirroring the extreme levels of chaos and violence playing out at the human level. This May, massive (and often 'unprecedented') flooding once again caused widespread devastation across the planet.

Extremely late snow fall from the USA to Europe to China caused serious problems for people and the food on which they rely, as did large and damaging hail storms.

Tornados, wildfires, water spouts, whirlpools, dust storms, volcanic eruptions, weird animal activity, and much more, made this May just one more extremely alarming month on planet earth.

An 11-year-old boy from Vidor is recovering after he was bitten by the same Pitbull for the third time this year.

His mother, Michelle Watts said he was taken to the hospital so he could get several stitches on the back of his leg.

"If people could have saw what he had to go through in the hospital to get the stitches cleaned up, that's heartbreaking just because someone couldn't put their dog up," said Watts.

Her son, Tyler Watts, was attacked by the pitbull when he was riding his bike down the street. Tyler Watt's said the dog knocked him off his bike then dragged him by the leg to the owner's yard at the intersection of Ruth place and Willow Bend drive.
