The flood gates of the Vaal Dam near Johannesburg South Africa were opened on 11 February, 2021 after days of heavy rain.
Flooding continues to affect parts of South Africa, with 10 fatalities reported in Limpopo province over the last few days.

Parts of the country were badly hit by flooding after heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Cyclone Eloise from around 23 January 2021.

Eloise has long since dissipated but heavy rainfall has continued to fall throughout the first weeks of February, causing further flooding and dam levels to rise. As of 11 February, authorities began releasing water from the Vaal Dam, situated about 75km south of Johannesburg.

Pair of avalanches kill 3 mountain climbers in Slovenia

Two avalanches in Slovenia killed three mountain climbers and injured three more people Saturday, authorities said.

The avalanches happened in the area of Kamnik-Savinja Alps, around 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, said the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief.

Police said four climbers were in the area of Mt. Storzic when the first avalanche killed two on the spot and buried the other two up to their waists.

The second avalanche struck during the rescue operation some some three hours later, killing another climber and seriously injuring the other. Two rescuers were also injured, one seriously, police said.

Police said the four climbers were the only ones in the area. Authorities issued an avalanche alert and warned against climbing during an ongoing spate of extremely cold and windy weather.

Cold front Medea brings snow to northern Greece

After a period of unseasonably warm weather across the country, the cold front "Medea" brought frigid temperatures and snowfall to northern Greece on Saturday.

Currently, snowfall and ice-cold temperatures have been recorded across Northern Greece, particularly in Florina, Kozani, Kastoria, Kavala, Katerini, and Thessaloniki.

The cold front will continue through the weekend, with more snowfall and frigid weather expected in Athens and the rest of the country on Monday.

Along with low temperatures and snowfall, meteorologists also predict that Medea will bring about strong thunderstorms around Greece late Saturday through Sunday.

Fifteen weather stations across the UK recorded their lowest temperatures ever for February overnight on Wednesday, according to the Met Office.

The forecaster's station in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, recorded a temperature of minus 23C, the lowest in the UK since 1995.

And the "extreme freeze" also saw the mercury plummet in areas in the Scottish Highlands, such as Kinbrace and Strathallan, to minus 21.3C and minus 18.2C respectively.

Russia's capital Moscow hit with the worst snowfall in decades

The Russian capital has been hit with the worst snowfall in decades, with freak weather disrupting air travel and bringing traffic to a halt. Several people have been injured as a result of roofs collapsing in Moscow Region.

The adverse weather befell the city and its surrounding region on Friday, and snow continued falling for two straight days. A snowfall this intense hasn't been registered in the city for some 50 years, with the current record dating back to 1973.

The mountains of snow resulted in the closure of multiple roads across the city overnight.


Comment: Meanwhile a major winter storm impacted the Pacific Northwest. A total of 11.1 inches of snow fell in Seattle between February 12-13. the daily snowfall for February 13 is 8.9 inches making it the snowiest day in Seattle in 52 years!

Almost 10 years to the day since mega-quake, another powerful earthquake strikes off Fukushima, Japan

A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake, which measured a strong 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale — the second-highest level — jolted Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures in the Tohoku region late Saturday night.

The quake, which also felt in Tokyo, where it registered a 4 on the Japanese scale, struck around 11:08 p.m., according to the Meteorological Agency. A tsunami warning was not issued.

As a precaution, however, those near coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground as aftershocks could continue.


Comment: This one has since been updated to a 7.3M quake. Japanese authorities report no deaths but around 150 injuries, and even though its strongest impact on land was just 40km from the Daichi nuclear power plant, they're reporting 'nothing to worry about there'. Which they would, given what happened last time...

This quake comes just a month shy of the 10-year anniversary of the 9.0M earthquake and tsunami that devastated eastern Japan on 11 March 2011.

We're reminded of Mexico City experiencing its strongest quake in recent years on the 32-year anniversary of its worst in modern times. Is some 'mass mind effect' involved (sometimes) in the timing/release of certain planetary/cosmic energies?

One dead, two injured in avalanche
A skier is dead and two others are injured after getting caught up in backcountry avalanches Friday afternoon.

Authorities initially said an avalanche struck around 3:20 p.m. in the Poop Chutes area, sweeping up at least four skiers, one of whom was not hurt.

Mounties later clarified that there were actually two avalanches. The one in the Poop Chutes area involved three skiers, while the other was on Spierhead Glacier and seriously injured one person.

Members of the Whistler RCMP detachment, Whistler Blackcomb ski patrol and Blackcomb Helicopters were dispatched to the area with avalanche technicians and search dogs to check for other victims.

Anyone who knows of a skier or snowboarder who was nearby and is "overdue" should contact Whistler RCMP, authorities said.

A one-year-old girl has died after her throat was torn out by the family dog.

The fatal attack happened in the city of Rivadavia in the Argentine province of Mendoza last Friday.

The victim, identified as Micaela Rufina Mendoza, was only one year and seven months old when an Argentinian Dogo attacked her while she played on her home patio.

Micaela managed to get onto the patio due to "a momentary lapse of care" on the part of her grandparents and aunt who were in the kitchen at the time of the incident, local media reported.

Mount Sinabung
Mount Sinabung in Karo District, North Sumatra Province, erupted again, spouting hot cloud and incandescent lava as far as two kilometers away.

The eruption occurred on the night of Friday (Feb 12), and the lava glided reportedly to the east and southeast of Mount Sinabung, Armen Putra, head of the Mount Sinabung Observation Post, stated here on Saturday.

The volcano also spewed hot cloud to a height of some one kilometer toward the east, southeast, and south of Mount Sinabung. Hot clouds of the eruption were recorded to have an amplitude of 120 mm, while the earthquake's duration was 159 seconds.

"The weather was cloudy, and weak to moderate wind was blowing to the east and southeast. The temperature was recorded at 17-23 degrees Celsius," he stated.

The emergency status of the 2,460-meter-high Mount Sinabung is declared at Level III (alert).
