A new type of sprite?
Barely 30 years ago, many researchers did not believe that upper atmospheric lightning existed-until 1989 when researchers from the University of Minnesota captured them on video tape. Now there is a menagerie of accepted forms: sprites, elves, gigantic jets, gnomes. These "transient luminous events" (TLEs) appear above thunderclouds, reaching toward space rather than lancing down to the ground like regular lightning.

On Aug.14th, Thomas Ashcraft may have spotted a new kind of sprite. "I was photographing a cluster of sprites over a thunderstorm in western Oklahoma when something curved snaked up behind the main cluster." This frame from his video of the event shows the strange form:

Comment: Some other transient luminous events (TLEs) so far this year include:

July 2017: Huge red sprite captured over Austria

June 2017: Red jellyfish sprites with halo of light captured over Austria

April 2017: Rare ELVE and red sprites captured in Czech Republic and 6 'gigantic jets' (ionospheric lightning) were photographed in Western Australia.

March 2017: A huge blue jet was observed over Brazil.

An 11-year-old girl is being treated in hospital following a suspected shark at a Spanish holiday resort.

The alleged attack off Grao de Moncofa, a hotspot for British tourists just south of Benicassim, left the girl with deep wounds on her foot.

After lifeguards plugged the heavy bleeding, she was rushed to the nearest medical centre on Saturday, according to local mayor Wenceslao Alos.

Mr Alos said it was likely she was attacked by a small type of shark measuring between 60cm and 70cm.

The lifeguards said they had 'never seen anything like' the attack but would not confirm it was a shark bite, El Periodico reported.

Mass fish death blamed on high river temperatures in Taipei City, Taiwan

Workers on a boat yesterday remove dead fish from the banks of the Keelung River in Taipei.

A Worker on a boat yesterday removes dead fish from the banks of the Keelung River in Taipei.
Large numbers of dead fish have washed up on the shores of the Keelung River from Zhongshan Bridge to Dazhi Bridge, probably because of consecutive days of high temperatures, the Taipei City Government said.

The city government said it expected to finish clearing the dead fish from the river today.

The Taipei Environmental Protection Bureau said that the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water near the dead fish was 3.5 milligrams per liter, which is about four to five times lower than normal.

The water temperature was 30.3oC, far higher than the average high temperature of 28.1oC in recent years, the bureau said.

A sinkhole measuring 20m in diameter has been found on reserve land in Waihi.

Hauraki District Council chief executive Langley Cavers said the sinkhole was found this morning on a council reserve between the Waihi Rugby Club and the Martha open pit mine.

Cavers said the site, known to be above historic mine workings, was classified as a hazard zone in 2002 and was cordoned off.

"While this is inconvenient, it is within an area where sinkholes could be expected."

RAIN HOLLAND
Wednesday was a wet and rainy day for the Netherlands. According to Weeronline, between 40 and 45 millimeters of rain fell in the west of Zuid-Holland, the north of Noord-Holland and on the Wadden islands. That's about half of what is usual for the entire month of August.

By Wednesday night Leeuwarden had the most rain, with 52.2 millimeters measured. Places like Grouw and Stavoren also got over 50 millimeters of rain. "Locally the total rainfall can climb up to 60 mm by [Thursday] morning", the weather agency said on Wednesday night.

According to Het Parool, the heavy rainfall caused problems across the country. Places in Gelderland, Limburg and Noord-Brabant had to deal with flooded streets. And the rain also left lanes on the A10 near Sloterdijk underwater, causing a very busy evening rush hour in Amsterdam.

Hurricane Harvey wreaks havoc on cattle across Texas

flood
Cattle ranchers in southeastern Texas had been moving livestock out of areas in the path of Hurricane Harvey for several days before the storm made landfall, but losses are likely as few anticipated the sheer breadth of the storm.

"Most of the producers started last Monday moving cattle out of the coastal region," said Texas A&M Extension specialist Tom 'Andy' Vestal. "By Tuesday or Wednesday they were asking producers who had cattle along rivers and watersheds to move their cattle. A lot of these guys have dealt with high water but nothing like this. Who could've imagined 40 to 44 inches of rainfall?"

About 1.2 million beef cows are in the 54 counties that have been declared disaster areas due to Hurricane Harvey, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The total is a "conservative estimate" and encompasses 27% of the state's herd, according to Texas A&M University livestock economist David Anderson.

Texas is the biggest cattle and calf producer in the U.S. and has the largest feedlot herd at 2.42 million head, according to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Gross income in 2015 from cattle sales and marketing totaled $11.5 billion, according to the Department of Agriculture.
