145 stranded pilot whales die on New Zealand beach

All of the 145 pilot whales that stranded themselves on a remote New Zealand beach have died.

However, conservation workers are hoping to save some of the eight pygmy killer whales that remained stranded Monday at the other end of the country in an unrelated event.

A hiker discovered the pilot whales in two pods about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) apart late Saturday on Stewart Island. About 75 were already dead and conservation workers decided to euthanize the others due to their poor condition and remote location.

Only about 375 people live on Stewart Island, which is also called Rakiura. The whales were found at Mason's Bay about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the main township of Oban.

Brazil has released its worst annual deforestation figures in a decade amid fears that the situation might worsen when the avowedly anti-environmentalist president-elect Jair Bolsonaro takes power.

The Amazon, which is being deforested at an annual rate of some 52,000 square kilometers (20,000 square miles) -- an area the size of Costa Rica -- is vital to the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a check on global warming.

You would think that with all the warnings about deforestation and its impact on climate change, deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest would continue its decline.

Actually, it has gotten worse - much worse. In a report released by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) and Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) on Friday, about 7,900 square kilometers (3,050 square miles) of the world's largest rainforest was destroyed between August 2017 and July 2018 - an area about five times the size of London.

This loss of the rainforest amounted to a 13.7 percent increase over the year before, based on satellite data. Environmental Minister Edson Duarte said illegal logging was to blame, adding that the loss of rainforest came about despite an increase in its budget and in operations carried out by its environment agency Ibama.

6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes Iran-Iraq border - 361 injured UPDATE

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck northeast of Baghdad. It has been felt in Iraq, Kuwait, and northern Iran.

The quake hit the Iran-Iraq border region and had a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The EMSC reported that the quake was widely felt more than 500 kilometers away from its epicenter.

Comment: Sputnik reports the number of injured has reached 361:

"The number of people, who asked for medical treatment, amounts to 361," Kolivand said, quoted by the Fars news agency.

Earlier media reports said that people had been injured in the cities of Gilan Gharb, Sarpol Zahab and Qasr-e Shirin.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said that the Iraqi-Iranian border region had been hit by the 6.3-magnitude earthquake. The tremors were registered at 16:37 GMT, 163 kilometers (over 100 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad and 20 kilometers southwest of the Iranian city of Sarpol Zahab.

Iran has faced several powerful quakes recently. Last year, a disastrous 7.2-magnitude quake killed and wounded hundreds. Earthquakes are common in mountainous Iran, due to the convergence of four major tectonic plates in the region.

A string of eerie-looking parasites called Phronima - which bear an uncanny resemblance to the Alien Queen which burst out of John Hurt’s chest in the iconic movie - have been discovered on Ventry Beach outside Dingle and are been cared for by Director of Dingle Oceanworld, Kevin Flannery.

Hundreds of parasite creatures which were the inspiration for the film 'Alien' have washed up off the Co Kerry coast.

A string of the eerie-looking parasites called Phronima - which bear an uncanny resemblance to the alien queen in the iconic movies - have been found on Ventry Beach outside Dingle.

The creatures - which eat barrel jellyfish from the inside out and ride around in their corpse - are an extremely rare find in Ireland.

The director of Dingle Oceanworld Kevin Flannery said: "Then the female lays her eggs inside in the poor barrel jellyfish."

He quipped that it is very timely find as pilots spotted strange objects flying close to their planes last Friday.

"So, I'm saying the aliens have landed", he joked.

Comment: We are seeing an increasing number of bizarre, odd (perhaps even mutated species), previously unknown and mysterious creatures being discovered recently, together with increases in abnormal animal and marine behaviour. All over the world such 'strange' and 'unusual' incidents are quickly becoming the norm, as are mass fish die offs.

Rare multiple waterspouts observed in Andaman Sea, Thailand

Tourists were treated to a spectacular sight of four waterspouts off Satun's resort island of Koh Lipe on Sunday.

The sudden phenomenon in the Andaman Sea was recorded as video and photos and widely shared on social media. The phenomenon happened a little before noon on Sunday when the four waterspouts shot out towards the horizon for 10-15 minutes, which was observed by those on the Sun Rise Beach, East of Koh Lipe.

However, the spectacle disappeared when rains arrived.

Weather Forecast Bureau spokesman Surapong Sarapa said a waterspout was common in the Andaman Sea coast during the rainy season but it was rare to have four of them at the same time.

Thunderstorms uproot a tree on Nguyen Van Linh Street in Binh Chanh District, crushing a motorbike driver.

A falling tree killed a man as heavy rains triggered by storm Usagi caused severe flooding in Saigon.

A big tree with diameter of one meter on Nguyen Van Linh Street in Binh Chanh District to the west of the city was uprooted and fell on a man passing by, knocking him unconscious.

The man, whose name has not been revealed, was hospitalized, but succumbed to his injuries later.

Storm Usagi weakened into tropical depression Sunday afternoon, but HCMC suffered severe flooding and saw big trees uprooted.

Calgary breaks 76-year snowfall record, adding to unusually snowy year

Calgarians found themselves navigating a nasty drive home on Friday as a band of snow blanketed the region.

Snowfall warnings were issued around 5 p.m. for Calgary, and areas north, east and south of the city. That warning stayed in place until early Saturday morning.

Environment Canada said Saturday that 13.2 cm of snow fell on Friday, which marks a new snowfall record for Nov. 23. The previous record was set in 1942 when 9.4 cm of snow fell.

November is normally the third snowiest month of the year with an average of 16.6 cm of snow over the 30 days. This year, Calgary has experienced a higher-than-average amount of snow for the month, already sitting at 23.7 cm as of Nov. 23.

This comes on the heels of a historically wet October that brought nearly five times the average amount of snow, ending the month with 48.4 cm of snow.

According to Environment Canada historical data, there has been a notable uptick of days with heavy accumulations of snow this year. Calgary will usually see one to two days with snowfall accumulations of at least 10 cm throughout the year; so far in 2018, there have been four days with over 10 cm of snow, one each in February, March, October and November.

Comment: Chilly weather is smashing cold records all across Canada this month. Meanwhile from the Prairies to Prince Edward Island, a harsh fall harvest means Canada could be facing a serious potato shortage, one that may cause millions of dollars worth of Canadian potatoes to rot in the ground this year.

An earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude struck off the Colombian coast on Saturday, and while there was no major tsunami threat, there was a possibility of tsunamis along the nearby coast, the European earthquake monitoring agency EMSC and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The quake epicenter was 36 km (22 miles) southeast of Mountain, Colombia, and at a depth of 10 km (six miles).
