On the second day of spring a nesting bald eagle is caught on camera buried in snow in Hays, Pittsburgh

Neither snow nor rain nor ... more snow stopped the Pittsburgh Hays bald eagle from tending to her two eggs Wednesday.

A live webcam caught the eagle seemingly buried in snow while incubating eggs that are expected to hatch today or in the next week, according to Rachel Handel, spokeswoman for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh winter doesn't stop the nesting progress of these birds.

The once endangered raptor is quite hardy and acclimated to the snow and cold with the nation's largest population living in Alaska.

Comment: Also in Pennsylvania but further east at the Codorus State Park the following video recording was recently taken:

Snow fell across large parts of Europe on Tuesday as the continent remained in the grip of cold weather despite it being the first official day of spring.

The Spanish islands of Menorca and Majorca saw a dusting of flakes as seven regions across the north of the country were put under snow and ice warnings and dozens of schools were closed in Catalonia.

Snow also fell across the majority of Germany with Berlin particularly badly affected. Temperatures in the city were not set to rise above 3C.

In Croatia, melting snow and ice has caused record flooding around the capital Zagreb while flakes continue to fall further to the east.

According to authorities, the Sava river had reached record water levels, surpassing the previous record by four inches.

The flooding has meant that residents are refusing to leave their properties, resulting in supplies being taken to them by emergency crews.

Just weeks after Yellowstone National Park was rocked by more than 200 earthquakes, the world's tallest geyser (also at Yellowstone) has erupted.

Employees at the park, which is located in Wyoming, USA, had reported seeing an eruption coming from the Steamboat Geyser on Thursday.

The geyser has not erupted since September 3, 2014, according to Newsweek.

"We don't really know the exact duration for the eruption at this time," Wendy Stovall, a US Geological Survey scientist with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, told the news site, adding that it's possible it will erupt again.

The first day of Spring is set to bring the fourth Nor'easter in the North East this month with up to 11 inches of snow predicted between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Earlier on Monday just three inches was predicted for the area but as the day progressed the National Weather Service anticipated that the snowfall would be heavier than first thought.

Heavy wet snow of between five and 11 inches is predicted for North Jersey, New York City and lower Hudson Valley.

Eight to 10 inches are expected in Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Morris counties.

The potential snow and rain storm is predicted to arrive on Tuesday and continue through midweek and the Nor'easter likely won't be the last of its kind for the season.

'Spring starts tomorrow, but snow is in the forecast,' the New York National Weather Service said on Twitter Monday morning.

The coming grand solar minimum can cause global cooling

There's a lot of evidence mounting that solar cycle 25 will usher in a new grand solar minimum. Since about October 2005, when the sun's magnetic activity went into a sharp fall, solar activity has been markedly lower, with solar cycle 24 being the lowest in over 100 years.

Meteorologist Paul Dorian at Vencore weather writes:
All indications are that the upcoming solar minimum which is expected to begin in 2019 may be even quieter than the last one which was the deepest in nearly a century.
Some scientists are even saying that we are on the cusp of a new grand solar minimum, and the upcoming cycle 25 may have even lower cycles after it.
This empirical modeling of solar recurrent patterns has also provided a consequent multi-millennial-scale experimental forecast, suggesting a solar decreasing trend toward Grand (Super) Minimum conditions for the upcoming period, AD2050-2250 (AD 3750-4450).

There's a lot of storm damage in Cullman County. The Cullman County School district announced classes would be canceled on Tuesday, due to the extent of the damage.

Hail battered hundreds of cars on the lot of Mitch Smith Chevrolet. Jerry Hayes confirmed that nearly all of the windshields have busted and the vehicle bodies have sustained heavy damage. The same thing happened 23-years ago to the same dealership.

Mitch Smith salesman Clint Chapman estimated the damage could exceed $4 million.

Record rainfall in northern parts of the Dominican Republic have caused flash flooding in Puerto Plata province.

Local media report that over 500 homes and businesses have been damaged. Comedores Económicos del Estado (CEED), the social service agency in the Dominican Republic, has distributed almost 6,000 meals as well as food supply packages to the affected populations, including the areas of Montellano, Sosúa, Playa Oeste, Aguas Negras and Rescate Ambar.

The severe weather struck during the evening of 15 March when it rained non-stop for around 7 hours. Further rain during the following days caused the San Marcos river and other smaller streams to overflow, flooding the neighborhoods (barrios) of Invi, Barrio Haiti, Los Domíngues and Las Mercedez.
