Severe flooding hits the Greek island of Kefalonia- families trapped, roads and homes submerged

mmmmm
Heavy rainfall on Thursday night and early Friday morning has caused widespread disruption across Kefalonia, leaving families trapped in vehicles, flooding homes and streets, and triggering landslides and debris flows.

The region of Livathous, in the southern part of the island, bore the brunt of the extreme weather conditions, with significant damage reported to the road network, transport links, and infrastructure. According to local media, parents and children were trapped in their cars, while many drivers were stranded for hours as they attempted to leave the area.

Traffic was severely disrupted, with vehicles arriving from Kyllini being forced to take a longer detour through Sami to reach Argostoli. Some residents were also compelled to find alternative routes to reach the island's capital.

The situation was particularly dire in Karouza, where landslides once again blocked roads, prompting emergency crews from the regional authority to work on clearing access routes. The Argostoli-Poros road was rendered impassable near Vlachata, close to the local cemetery, due to land subsidence and water accumulation.

The North West of England had the highest number of fatal dog attacks of any region over the past five years.

In total, 48 people across England and Wales died after being bitten or struck by a dog between 2019 and 2024, according to data obtained by The i Paper.

Thirteen people were killed in the North West - more than a quarter of all dog-related deaths.

Dog attacks remain rare and there is often no single reason behind them.

However, the number of fatal attacks in England and Wales peaked in 2022 when 19 people died.

The rise could be in part down to the fact more people own dogs, but also the popularity of XL Bullies - a breed linked to violent attacks on humans. Experts also said criminal gangs breeding dangerous dogs for profit and under-prepared owners who bought pets during the pandemic may have contributed to the attacks.

Landslide crashes down hillside burying homes in Indonesia

mmmmmm
A landslide crashed down a hillside, burying homes in Indonesia. Dozens of homes were blanketed by the soil and debris from the Hill Cliff in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, on the morning of February 14.

Footage shows the chunks of earth flow hitting residential areas, causing frantic locals to flee in fear. They can be heard screaming as they witness the hill caving in. The landslide occurred behind Banawa 21 State Elementary School, leaving students afraid to go to school.

No injuries were reported from the incident. Classes were also suspended following the disaster.

Excessive rainfall can saturate the soil, reducing its stability and causing it to slide.

Roads remained closed throughout Southern California following an atmospheric river that triggered rounds of evacuations and closures as it unleashed damaging mudslides in the fire-ravaged region.

Multiple mudslides and flash floods were reported through Thursday night. In the Los Angeles area, mud and debris covered several major roads including the Pacific Coast Highway near the Pacific Palisades and Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills.

Evacuations warnings and orders were issued in multiple counties throughout Southern California, though the majority occurred in the Los Angeles area, where the worst of the wildfires broke out last month.

SOTT Focus: SOTT Earth Changes Summary - January 2025: Extreme Weather, Planetary Upheaval, Meteor Fireballs

secsjan25
Southern California saw one of its most severe wildfires in history. Ignited by hurricane-force Santa Ana wind gusts, below-average humidity, and record drought, fires erupted across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura counties. The Palisades Fire on the outskirts of Malibu and the Eaton Fire in Pasadena were the most ruinous, consuming over 37,000 acres together, scorching over 12,000 structures, and claiming the lives of 24 individuals. Over 200,000 residents were forced to evacuate as flames engulfed neighborhoods, including high-value areas, causing an estimated $250-275 billion in economic losses. Foreign crews assisted firefighting personnel in battling the fires for weeks, where containment was restricted by the relentless wind.

The fires permanently impacted the region, leading to a wholesale rebuilding process.

It's important to mention that several property insurers in California cut coverage or stopped offering new homeowners policies in the past few years, and even right before the devastating fires, to limit losses amid the risk of paying enormous claims due to wildfires.

Social networks got flooded with different theories about the origins of the fire; from authorities' incompetence to Direct Energy Weapons (see Lahaina fires for reference), and arsonists. It may very well be all of them. Some even commented that this was a message from the Deep State to keep the California Elite in line...

Sun candle or portal to another dimension?

The flame-shaped atmospheric phenomenon known is known as a "subsun" or "sun candle"
Skiers in Austria were dazzled by what appeared to be a portal to another dimension.

Amazed skiers thought they discovered a portal to another dimension when they saw a flame-shaped atmospheric phenomenon known as a "subsun" or "sun candle" this week at SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser in Brixental, Austria.

This rare and majestic atmospheric optics display occurs when sunlight interacts with ice crystals in the atmosphere, typically within cirrus clouds or ice fog, which were both present at the time on the ski slope.

The subsun is a type of subhorizon ice halo. The phenomenon results from a direct reflection of the sun on millions of cloud crystals acting together as a giant mirror.

The position of the sun has to be just right, and in this case, the cloud shadow made this subsun really stand out by creating a dark background.

SkiWelt is one of the largest ski slopes in the world and has Austria's largest night-skiing area.

JAPAN REPORT

Japan continues to top the world's snow depth tables after more huge snowfalls over the past week, with reports of up to 1 metre (40") of snowfall in 24 hours. Niigata continues to post the country's deepest snowpacks—which are about double the most that's lying anywhere else in the world. At Arai Ski Area, near the ski town of Myoko, there is a base depth of 610cm (over 20 feet), with Charmant Hiuchi Ski Area near Itoigawa City coming in second with a 560cm base. Ski areas in Nagano, host of the 1998 Winter Olympics, are also experiencing substantial snow depths, with the renowned resort of Happo-One in the Hakuba Valley boasting 5.5 meters.

The 6m/20 feet Polkus base is believed to be the deepest recorded base worldwide in several years. Japan's ski areas have been experiencing remarkable snowfalls over the past few months.

While much coverage has been given to the northern island of Hokkaido, known for ski areas like Niseko (145/250cm / 58/140"), which currently has every run open, the deepest snow depths are actually being observed in Niigata Prefecture, north of Tokyo on the Japanese mainland.

This region is benefiting from a weather phenomenon known as the Siberian Express, where dry air blowing east across central and eastern Asia hits the Sea of Japan, then rises and releases abundant snowfall upon encountering Japan's mountainous coastline.

Comment: Earlier report from February 4: Record-breaking snowfall hits Hokkaido as cold front sweeps Japan - 120 cms (nearly 4 FEET) of snow in just 12 hours with more heavy falls forecast

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki's eruption triggers highest alert level in Indonesia

nnnnnnn
Indonesia raised the volcanic alert status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores Island to the highest level on Thursday following a surge in volcanic activities.

The volcano has reportedly been erupting continuously for several days, News.Az reports, citing Xinhua.

"Deep volcanic earthquakes have increased significantly. This indicates that the intensity of magma activity in Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki's magma chamber is rising and moving toward shallower depths," said Muhammad Wafid, head of the geology agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

The agency has urged the public to remain alert and avoid the 6 km radius danger zone. It also advised heightened vigilance in a 7 km extended danger zone in the southwestern and northeastern sectors due to the increased risk of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is one of Indonesia's 127 active volcanoes.
