Hurricane force winds hit Switzerland

Weather forecasters warned of hurricane strength winds in some parts of the country as storm Burglind hits the country on Wednesday.

Winds of 90-130km/hr are expected across the Swiss plains during the morning, at their peak from 10am to midday, with gusts of up to 150km/hr predicted at higher elevation, MeteoNews said.

In most places the storm will bring heavy rain or even hail, though the southern canton of Valais should expect snow above 1,600m throughout Wednesday.

Drivers should expect difficult conditions on the roads with limited visibility due to swirling spray and a risk of aquaplaning, said meteorologists.

Storm Eleanor to batter UK and France with 80mph winds, monster waves and possible flooding - UPDATE

storm eleanor UK
Storm Eleanor is set to batter the British coastline with 80mph and monster waves starting Tuesday night.

The fifth named storm of the season will bring a "very windy" spell to the UK from this evening and into Wednesday, forecasters said.

The Met Office has issued several national severe weather warnings due to the potential for travel disruption.

Comment: Update - Wed, 3rd Jan:

Storm Eleanor has lashed the UK with violent storm-force winds of up to 100mph, leaving thousands of homes without power and hitting transport links. Widespread disruption is expected today after the storm swept across the country overnight carrying heavy rain, hail and dramatic thunder and lightning. Several major bridges were closed due to high winds and there were numerous reports of fallen trees blocking roads including the M25.

In Ireland the storm left around 55,000 homes without electricity, while the west coast was hit by widespread flooding and 140kph winds.

The French weather service has placed most of north and eastern France on alert for wild weather as Storm Eleanor looks set to lash the country with winds of up to 120km/h. Some 65,000 homes were without power in France's western regions of Brittany, Pays-de-la-Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine due to winter storm Carmen which hit on Monday.

Weather 'bomb' set to go off along US East Coast - Record snowstorms and cold to follow

UPDATE: Jan. 2, 2018, 1 p.m. EST This story has been updated to reflect new weather forecast guidance.

An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century - if at all.

The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves.

Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds by the time it moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday night.

Deadly cold temperatures disrupt US: 'Warming centers' open across South (VIDEOS)

Water squirts from a frozen fountain near downtown in Charlotte, N.C., Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018. Temperatures plummeted overnight to 2 degrees in the north Georgia mountains, 14 in Atlanta and 26 as far south as New Orleans as the Gulf Coast felt more like Green Bay.
Dangerously cold temperatures blamed for at least nine deaths have wreaked havoc across a wide swath of the U.S., freezing a water tower in Iowa, halting ferry service in New York and leading officials to open warming centers even in the Deep South.

The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories and freeze warnings Tuesday covering a vast area from South Texas to Canada and from Montana through New England.

Indianapolis early Tuesday tied a record low of minus 12 degrees Fahrenheit (-24 Celsius) for Jan. 2 set in 1887, leading Indianapolis Public Schools to cancel classes. And the northwest Indiana city of Lafayette got down to minus 19 (-28 Celsius), shattering the previous record of minus 5 (-21 Celsius) for the date, set in 1979, the National Weather Service said. After residents there began complaining of a hum, Duke Energy said it was caused by extra power surging through utility lines to meet electricity demands.

The flurry of quakes has struck near Thessaloniki
Seven quakes have struck northern Greece in less than 24 hours near the Brit holiday hotspot Thessaloniki.

The biggest one hit around 75km away from the tourist haven at 6.24am this morning (4.24am UK), measuring 5.0 magnitude.

It left buildings shaking as locals reported it being "scary", "loud and noisy" and "lasting about 6 seconds".

People in neighbouring country Republic of Macedonia also felt the quake.

Experts are now warning Greeks not to enter old buildings amid fears they will collapse.

They are also warning more quakes are likely to hit in the next 24 hours, and potentially a major one.

After the flames subside: Hillsides left barren by California wildfires now at risk from mudslides

The Thomas fire burns through Los Padres National Forest near Ojai, California
The frightening hiss and crackle of the massive Thomas Fire in Southern California has been replaced by the loud droning of heavy equipment below the burn area.

Public work crews in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties are frantically clearing out every debris basin and storm drain possible, because the fire has left behind another threat -- mudslides.

"The Thomas Fire burned all of our front country range here," said Tom Fayram, Santa Barbara's deputy director of public works."

All these hills normally have a protective cover of chaparral. That's all gone. Almost 100% gone," he said.

What's left is black-gray hillside that officials and residents alike fear will become ashy waves of floodwater with the first rain of a so far bone-dry season.

Ice chunks and rafts of various size have piled up by the force of wind and formed a long ice wall that extends dozens of kilometers on the verge of Xingkai Lake, border lake between China and Russia, in Mishan, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

The ice wall was only three to four meters high in the beginning. As time goes on, it has risen to over 20 meters.

Stretching along the eastern side of the lake, the ice wall attracted visitors and shutterbugs to witness this unusual scene.
