Earth Changes
"We're acting to curb the degradation of important habitats, to curb the disappearance and migration of important species from this site," Jan Szyszko, environment minister with Poland's right-wing government told journalists.
The National Weather Service predicts a 40 percent chance of snow and rain Friday night and a 30 percent chance of snow Saturday morning.
If the snow does come, it won't be much. Less than an inch is forecast between 9 p.m. and midnight, and about half-inch is on the forecast for Saturday before noon.
Still, that's another 1.5 inches atop a mounting snow total for March, historically the snowiest month of the year for Fort Collins. Wednesday's snowfall of 13.4 inches put us at 21.1 inches for the month. The 1981-2010 average for March is 12.6 inches, so Fort Collins has collected 168 percent of the monthly average with a week remaining until April.
And that snow was wet. Between the rain and snow from the storm, Fort Collins received 1.44 inches of moisture, which puts the city nearly 2 inches over average for this time of year, and boosted the snow total for the season to 67 inches, which is 19 inches above average.
This bodes well for snowpack. In the South Platte River Basin, snowpack was 102 percent of average for this time of year before Wednesday's storm. It's now 106 percent of average, according to data from the National Water and Climate Center.
Wednesday's storm set a record, too. The previous record snowfall for March 23 was 6.7 inches in 2013, according to records from the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University.
Following a pattern favoring more warm days than cold days into next week, a change will likely bring record cold to parts of the Midwest and East.
"The polar vortex will drop into Ontario during the first weekend in April," according to AccuWeather Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Lundberg.
This means arctic air will have a direct path into the Midwest.

The National Weather Service confirms an EF2 tornado hit eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas earlier this week.
The National Weather Service in Tulsa, Oklahoma, says the twister had winds of 120 mph to 130 mph when it hit Wednesday night. The tornado was on the ground for 11 miles and had a maximum width of 800 feet.
Four people were injured and a handful of homes were destroyed in the storm.
Forecasters say more severe weather could hit the eastern half of Arkansas on Sunday, with small hall and gusty winds the biggest concern.

Officials with Columbia Gas, however, say the lines outside the home have been inspected and are safe.
The explosion of the one-story brick home at South Champion Avenue and Stockbridge Road occurred at 6:08 p.m., said Battalion Chief Steve Martin, a spokesman for the Fire Division. No one was in the home at the time, and no one was injured.
However, the blast destroyed the house, at 870 Stockbridge, and damage to a few nearby houses included blown-out windows.
"In my 30 years, I haven't seen an explosion like this," said Fire Battalion Chief Tom DeLong, who was at the scene.
Although a blaze immediately engulfed the structure, fire crews had it out within an hour or so.
DeLong said new owners had just closed this week on the sale of the house but hadn't moved in. He didn't have their names. DeLong said it looked like the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
Comment: Last month massive explosions completely leveled a house and buildings in Seattle, Washington. In Yorkshire, UK a man died after another huge house explosion there.
There seems to have been an increase in the number of massive house explosions around the world in recent times, with investigators still attempting to determine the cause in many cases. Could a 'cosmic' source of ignition be responsible for some of these incidents?

When the Daily Voice visited the house on Wednesday, the SPCA were also there looking for the owners, who were not home. Only the white pit bull could be seen in the yard.
Police who arrived at the scene shot and killed one of the animals, leaving friends to rescue a bleeding Wayne "Wayntjie" Kayster.
Kayster was rushed to hospital, but died later on Monday night.
Some residents in Lotus River claim Kayster was a known thief, who had been trying to break into the house in First Avenue while the owners were away.
However, his distraught family says the 35-year-old drug addict was merely looking for scrap when the dogs attacked him and ripped out his throat.
The heavily decomposed whale was 10 meters long and weighed about 5 tons.
According to locals, many dead whales wash ashore the coast of Quang Binh but this was the biggest whale they had seen in recent decades.
Ho Dang Chien, Chairman of Duc Trach Commune, said shortly after receiving information from fishermen, the local government buried the whale in accordance with local beliefs.
Vietnamese fishermen believe that whales rescue people in danger at sea and can bring them a prosperous fishing season. They consider whales as the Nam Hai god and sea gods for protecting and supporting them in their daily lives and at sea.
