Large hailstones pound areas of Uruguay

Strong hailstorms hit Uruguay this Thursday. According to the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet), the storms hit points in the departments of Florida and Rivera.

The ice blocks in some localities were large, as in the case of Vichadero, in Rivera, very close to the Aceguá municipality, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, on the border of the two countries. The warm air that advances from the north favored the formation of clouds of great vertical development over the Uruguayan territory this Thursday.

An erupting volcano in the Canary Islands has blown open a third fissure - sending a fresh river of lava down the mountainside.

It came as authorities recorded eight new earthquakes up to magnitude 3.5 on the island of La Palma on Friday.

They are now waiting to see whether lava from the new fissure - which burst open around 400m to the north of original eruption site - will join the main flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano range, which has reached the Atlantic Ocean.
