Contrary to what the media is rattling off about above normal temperatures in the Arctic, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) shows that temperatures are record low and just 1C above freezing. Also for the first time ever in history Squaw Valley and Tahoe ski areas will remain open for July 4th skiing and beyond. There is still so much snow up in the mountains that mountain biking and hiking is dangerous because of the still deep snows.

People at relief works after a landslide in which a 7-yr-ol girl Dipeeka Barman (inset) was buried alive in the debrisa, at Panikhaiti in Kamrup district of Assam on Monday.
Floods and landslides claimed two lives in Assam on Monday - both victims being minor girls - while the overall flood situation in the state continued to remain grim with officials putting the total number of people affected at around 3.55 lakh.

While Dipeeka Barman, a six-year old schoolgirl was killed in a landslide incident at Panikhaiti in the eastern outskirts of Guwahati city early Monday morning, Pallabi Narai, a two-and-a-half year old girl died of drowning in floods in Lakhimpur district. The body of one Mahendra Dekaraja, who was washed away by floods in Kaki in Hojai district on Saturday evening, meanwhile was recovered on Monday.

Dipeeka Barman, a Class 1 student of a Jatiya Vidyalaya at Panikhaiti, a locality in the eastern part of the city, was getting ready for school when earth from the slope of the hill behind their tin-roofed bamboo house came tumbling down, instantly burying her. While Dipeeka died on the way to the hospital, her younger sister fractured one of her legs after she got stuck under the debris. The incident took place at around 7:45 AM on Monday. Today was the last day of school before the summer holidays.

Russian scientists have captured rare footage of a group of orcas hunting down and killing a 12-meter whale just off the Kamchatka peninsula. There are only about 200 carnivore orcas in the Russian Far East, TASS reported, citing biologist Tatiana Ivkovich, a researcher from St. Petersburg State University.

"It's an amazing event. Over the course of all our work, we have once seen orcas finish eating a whale. And here we are, watching the hunt itself. Orcas ate a minke whale, it's not a big one, up to 12 meters in length," the scientist said.

In the video, the orcas are seen chasing the whale to exhaust and drown it, the researcher noted. They then seemingly tear the whale apart, with blood appearing on the surface and being seen in the whale's throat.

There's a new attraction for thousands of people enjoying the long holiday weekend on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Shelly Island is a destination you won't find on a standard map. The giant barrier island suddenly formed in the Atlantic Ocean, almost overnight.

CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann reports the mile-long island, which measures as wide as a football field, has attracted hundreds of tourists by boat for the Fourth of July.

Pilot Larry Ihler told Strassmann the island "has definitely gotten bigger" and is "more built up."

"The monsoon rain front will become stronger, influenced by water vapor from the typhoon and bring more torrential rain to some regions," said KMA official.

A 86-year-old man went missing after falling into a flooded stream in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, which received over 100 millimeters of rain between midnight Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.

Mexico's Popocetepetl volcano erupted early Sunday (2 July) morning, sending a column of smoke and ash soaring into the sky, the National Disaster Prevention Center announced. Officials said there were 136 low-intensity exhalations from the volcano recorded.

Ash fallout was reported in several towns in Mexico State, including Ozumba, Amecameca, Tlalmanalco, Chalco, Ayapango, Tenango del Aire and San Pedro Nexapa, El Sol de Mexico reported. Luis Felipe Puente, the national coordinator of Civil Protection, said the eruption had sent a column 2 kilometres (1.2miles) into the sky.

The volcano's opening was glowing at night as it erupted, El Sol de Mexico reported.

During the day, the volcano continued to erupt, sending smoke and ash in a northeastern direction. Three eruptions were recorded with a moderate amount of ash pushed northeast of the volcano. According to El Universal, Puente also shared recommendations in light of ash fallout from the eruption.
