Geomagnetic storm underway - Bright auroras sighted in Montana and Canada

Earth's magnetic field is reverberating from the unexpected impact of a CME during the early hours of April 20th. G1-class geomagnetic storms are now underway with bright auroras sighted earlier today in Montana and Canada.

"Northern lights danced across the entire northwestern Montana sky early this morning," reports Philip Granrud. "I photographed them with a wide angle lens on top of my car several miles outside of Kalispell."

"It was such a nice break from everything that's been going on in the world lately," he says.

This is the first geomagnetic storm of 2020. In fact, the last time storm levels reached G1 on NOAA Storm Scales was more than a year ago: March 16-17, 2019.

People in parts of north Georgia got an amazing sight in the sky Saturday.

Channel 2 Action News viewer John Westbrook took pictures of a rainbow-colored cloud formation over Holly Springs in Floyd County.

Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Glenn Burns explains how the amazing phenomenon, called a "circumhorizontal arc" or a "fire rainbow," happens.

"High clouds made of ice crystals are hit with the angle of the sun, creating the same effect as a prism," Burns said.

The result is a wispy, iridescent cloud formation.

A 40-foot gray whale washed ashore north of Pacific City Saturday, the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded after the camp host to Sand Lake Recreation Area discovered the whale had washed ashore overnight.

Biologists from Oregon State University performed an autopsy on the male whale Saturday afternoon.

The bodies of nine people were found after being engulfed by a landslide that hit an illegal gold mine in South Solok District, West Sumatra, on Saturday, the police stated on Sunday.

"By this morning, all victims were found dead. Their bodies were retrieved and laid in state at their homes," Chief of the South Solok District Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Imam Yulisdianto stated.

The landslide struck at around 5:50 p.m. local time on Saturday while they were manually digging for gold at the mine, he noted.

At least 36 killed by floods in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

The UN reports that at least 36 people have lost their lives in flooding in South Kivu Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).

According to the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), torrential rain fell in the city of Uvira and surrounding areas in South Kivu, from 16 to 17 April 2020.

Officials said the heavy rain caused the Mulongwe river to break its banks in Uvira city. The ensuing floods caused significant material damage. Theo Kassi, governor of the province reported that as of 17 April, at least 3,500 homes had been destroyed. MONUSCO said 15,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and 7 bridges damaged or have completely collapsed. Almost 78,000 people are reported to have been left without shelter. Roads have been blocked and drinking water supply cut.

Despite decades of doom-and-gloom prophecies, Greenland's Ice Sheet is currently GAINING monster amounts of "mass" — 27 gigatons over the past 5 days alone (April 14 - 18, 2020).

Crucial to the survival of a glacier is its surface mass balance (SMB) - the difference between accumulation and ablation (sublimation and melting). Changes in mass balance control a glacier's long-term behavior, and are its most sensitive climate indicators.

On the back of substantial SMB gains over the past few years, the Greenland ice sheet looks set to continue that trend in 2019-20. From April 14 through April 18, 2020, the world's largest island added a monster 27+ gigatons to its ice sheet. According to climate alarmists, this simply shouldn't be happening in a warming world. In fact, it might as well not be happening as developments like these NEVER receive MSM attention, meaning alarmists are NEVER privy to the full and unalarming picture...

Sicily's Mount Etna erupted in plumes of smoke and ash which reached heights of over 5 km and produced "slight falls of fine ash" on the eastern side of the volcano on April 19, Italy's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported.

According to the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the New Crater of Etna experienced "an episode of Strombolian activity and modest lava fountains, accompanied by ash emission," on Sunday morning, April 19. The institute said there were no lava flows and the event was over by approximately 1 pm, local time.

Comment: There has been an uptick in volcanic activity worldwide recently.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake, registering a 4 on the Japanese intensity scale, struck off Miyagi Prefecture early Monday, according to the Meteorological Agency, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake, which occurred just after 5:30 a.m., came at a depth of 50 km, the agency added.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was 41.7 kilometers (26 miles) beneath the Pacific seabed, rating the risk of casualties and damage as low.

Three dead, dozens injured after floods sweep through West Pokot

Three people are feared dead and more than a dozen others are missing after flash floods swept through Chesogon along the West Pokot-Elgeyo Marakwet border.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner Ahmed Omar says among those missing include police officers whose camp was swept away by the raging waters.
