Agencies overwhelmed as over 127 dead dolphins wash up on Southwest Florida shores in 2018

A dead dolphin is washed up on the beach south of Lowdermilk Park close to North Lake Drive in Naples on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018.
As it has for been many species, 2018 was a terrible year for dolphins, which are still in what was declared an "unusual mortality event" by government agencies in August.

The region's unrelenting and remarkably virulent toxic red tide is thought to be to blame. Scientific confirmation of its lethal impact on dolphins, however, has been slow in coming

Though more 127 dolphins have died in Southwest Florida during the event, there are only 16 definitive necropsy results, which speaks to the level of overwhelm, agencies say.

And it's entirely possible that more animals are dying than are being counted, said Kim Amendola, communications supervisor for National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries division, but now, with the federal government partially shut down since Saturday, NOAA's body counts aren't being updated.

Dead minke whale discovered on west shore of Yarmouth Bar, Canada

WHALE
The body of a minke whale measuring close to 20 feet was discovered on the western shore of Yarmouth Bar on Christmas Day.

Andrew Reid, a response co-ordinator with the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS), says officials with the Oceanographic Environmental Research Society and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans had visited the dead mammal and collected samples and measurements.

From the length of the whale, Reid estimates that it is a juvenile minke whale.

Reported maximum lengths for minke whales are 30-35 feet for females and 29-32 feet for males. Both sexes can weigh four to five tons at sexual maturity. They typically live 30-50 years.

People stand on the street after an earthquake was felt across northern Venezuela, in Caracas, Venezuela December 27, 2018.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit northern Venezuela early on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with witnesses reporting tremors more than 100 km (60 miles) from the epicenter. The quake was recorded 4 km northeast of San Diego at 0859 GMT at a depth of about 10 km, according to the USGS website.

"The whole house shook," said a witness in Club de Campo, 102 km from the epicenter, in a posting on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) website.

Another witness said the quake lasted five or six seconds.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Ski areas around the Tahoe Basin were apparently on Santa's nice list this year, getting a fresh shot of powdery snow for skiers celebrating Christmas on the slopes.

Resorts on all sides of Lake Tahoe reported snowfall ranging from 6 inches to 18 inches of new snow by Christmas morning after a system rolled through the region Christmas Eve and through the night.

"It was a good shot in the arm for winter in general," said Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe spokesperson Mike Pierce.

"Not that we were thin, but it put that nice fresh coat (of snow) on everything — making Tahoe shine and look spectacular."

The fresh snow allowed Mt. Rose to open new terrain on Christmas Day, including many previously-closed runs on the Slide Side.

In the latest instance of confrontation between man and animal, three people were seriously injured by a leopard after locals flocked to see the animal in Tamil Nadu's Vellore city on Thursday afternoon. This incident has come to the fore less than two weeks after a stray leopard waltzed into the judicial magistrate court in Gujarat's Surendranagar district triggering panic among locals.

Going by eyewitness accounts, a farmer named Bharathi was the first person to be attacked by the majestic cat while he was working at his fields in Vellore earlier in the day. One Ammani Ammal also incurred injuries after he tried to rescue the farmer. Following the attacks, the word about a stray leopard roaming the fields spread like wildfire attracting locals who gathered at the spot to catch a glimpse of the big cat.

Very shallow M5.5 earthquake hits Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Zimbabwe earthquake
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 has struck the border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, with shaking felt as far away as Harare, seismologists say. There was no immediate word on damage or injuries.

The tremor, which struck at 7:37 a.m. on Saturday, was centered near Espungabera in central Mozambique, about 54 kilometers (33 miles) southeast of Chipinge and 92 kilometers (57 miles) northwest of Massangena.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) puts the magnitude at 5.5 with a depth of 7.6 kilometers (4.7 miles), making it a very shallow earthquake. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre puts the magnitude at 5.6.

There was no immediate word on damage or casualties, but the USGS estimates that up to 21 million people could have felt the earthquake, including 274,000 people who may have felt "strong" to "very strong" shaking.

"Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are a mix of vulnerable and earthquake resistant construction," the USGS said in its assessment. "Some casualties and damage are possible and the impact should be relatively localized."

Indonesia raises volcano alert, reroutes all flights around erupting Anak Krakatau

An ash column from the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano has forced Indonesia's aviation chiefs to reroute all flights between Java and Sumatra islands, just days after a deadly tsunami triggered by the volcano killed more than 400.

"All flights are rerouted due to Krakatau volcano ash on red alert," the government air-traffic control agency AirNav said in a release. After raising the volcano's alert level on Thursday, authorities went on to impose a five-kilometer exclusion zone.

Authorities continue to urge people to stay clear of the coast, already devastated after an underwater landslide caused by the eruption of Anak Krakatau triggered a deadly tsunami that killed at least 430 people last Saturday night.
