Protesters demonstrating against U.S. President Donald Trump take cover as they are hit by pepper spray by police on the sidelines of the inauguration in Washington, DC, US, January 20, 2017
A 10-year-old boy and his mother are suing Washington, DC police officers for unlawfully pepper spraying them during a roundup of protesters on President Donald Trump's Inauguration Day.

The complaint filed Wednesday says that Gwen Frisbie-Fulton and her son, identified only as as "AS" - since he was 10 at the time - were peacefully demonstrating when police kettled protesters at 12th and L Streets on January 20, 2017.

The lawsuit says police discharged pepper-spray in "supersoaks." Frisbie-Fulton and her son tried to escape the spraying, but AS was knocked back into the group by a line of officers.

"I was terrified for my son's safety. When he was knocked down, I instinctually jumped on top of him to cover his body with mine," said Frisbie-Fulton said in an ACLU statement. "We are told police are there to keep us safe, but on Inauguration Day they were the ones who put us in danger."

Orthodox Christians in Russia and other countries around the world are celebrating Christmas on January 7, an event which 2017 years ago marked the beginning of the new history of mankind.

Christians conclude a four-week fast during which they confess their sins and receive communion. And on Christmas Eve they have special fasting, "until the first star," in memory of how the Magi came first to the birthplace of Christ following the movement of the star in the sky. At present, a candle in front of the altar, which is lit at the end of the Christmas Eve service at about noon, symbolizes the star.

CDC begins preparing for nuclear detonation

A photo of a hydrogen bomb test appears on the CDC website announcing grand rounds: "Public Health Response to a Nuclear Detonation."
With this week's bellicose boasting about who has the bigger red button on his desk, an alert Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention felt more than a bit on the nose.

With the prospect of actual nuclear war breaking out between North Korea and the United States seeming ever more real, the CDC is moving to prepare health professionals and others on what the public health response would be to a nuclear detonation.

The CDC announced it is staging a grand rounds - a teaching session - on the topic. The target audience: doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, pharmacists, veterinarians, certified health education specialists, laboratory scientists, and others. The event will be held Jan. 16.

A spokesperson for the agency said planning for the event has been underway for months - in fact, since CDC officials took part in a"radiation/nuclear incident exercise" led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency last April, Kathy Harben said in an email.

"CDC participants felt it would be a good way to discuss public health preparedness and share resources with states and other partners. State and local partners also have expressed interest in this topic over time," she said.

The Israeli occupation authorities have refused to release 62-year-old Palestinian detainee Haneyya Sharay'a despite the end of her prison sentence.

Coordinator for the National Factions in Nablus, Emad al-Deen Eshteiwi, said an Israeli court ruled that prisoner Sharay'a be jailed for seven days and pay a fine of 5,500 shekels, which she did.

Eshteiwi added that Sharay'a was slated to be released on Wednesday. However, the occupation authorities have kept her behind prison bars.

The Russian Embassy in the UK says McMafia, a new BBC series depicting Russian gangsters living in London, is a barely disguised dig at Russians, and inaccurate to boot.

The eight episode series, premiering on BBC One on January 1, depicts one wealthy Russian mafia family's unsuccessful efforts to put criminal life behind them and build a legitimate life in the UK.

Cops kill veteran who accidentally pushed medical alert button

Kenneth Chamberlain
A police officer who shot and killed an innocent 68-year-old mentally ill veteran who accidentally hit the medical emergency button in his home, will face no consequences after acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim determined that there was insufficient evidence to press charges.

The victim, Kenneth Chamberlain, accidentally triggered a medical alert through "Life Aid," which prompted police to visit his home. When the officers arrived unexpectedly, Chamberlain told the responding officers that he was OK and did not need any help. He refused to answer his door, and instead called Life Aid and told them that he did not need the police at his home.

"I have the White Plains Police Department banging on my door, and I did not call them and I am not sick," Chamberlain told the dispatcher on the phone.

However, the officers refused to leave and initiated a standoff with Chamberlain, allegedly taunting him with racial slurs, according to his family.
