Unannounced active shooter drill traumatizes middle school students

students in class
A middle school principal in Virginia has apologized to parents for an unannounced active shooter drill that seemed too real for some students - including one who "literally thought she was going to die," her mother said.

While unannounced safety drills aren't new in the district, Short Pump Middle School Principal Thomas McAuley acknowledged in an email that Tuesday's exercise at the school "seemed too real," the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

"Please know our intent is never to cause unnecessary anxiety," McAuley's email read. "Using unannounced drills helps students as well as our own staff to 'train their brains' to respond appropriately under stress."

But the apology came a little too late for the mother of an eighth-grade girl who thought the drill was real after a code blue was announced on the school's intercom, prompting the girl to send her mother a text message saying, "I love you," the mom, April Sullivan, told the newspaper.

"They thought someone was in their school attacking them," Sullivan said. "My daughter was traumatized. She literally thought she was going to die."

Comment: That's not a fair comparison. A fire drill doesn't contain the threat of 'imminent' death with it. If you were to remove that element, then how will it really prepare people? The question is whether these drills will do anything to better prepare people for an active shooter situation. Do they just end up causing undue stress on the students or will they eventually desensitize people to them, and negate the whole purpose of being able to quickly and safely respond to a crisis? 'Wish You Were Here': Roger Waters displays pro-Assange message at Berlin concert

Roger Waters
Roger Waters, the former Pink Floyd singer, has once again mixed the worlds of music and politics by displaying a banner in support of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at a concert in Berlin.

The neon red text, which read "Resist the attempted silencing of Julian Assange," was projected onto a black backdrop before his concert on Saturday night. Waters, who is known for making radical political statements on stage, is an admirer of Assange and has previously featured images of the whistleblower in his shows.

Assange is unlikely to see the message of support, however. Housed in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since claiming asylum in 2012, the Australian has been banned from using the phone and internet for several weeks. He is also prohibited from having visitors.

Lee Camp on Redacted Tonight: 'It's open season on Americans by US police forces'

We have a uniquely American problem in which civilians are getting massacred by police on a near-daily basis, Lee Camp says on the latest 'Redacted Tonight' episode about the problem of out-of-control policing in the US.

Just several days ago, video emerged showing Milwaukee police Tasering NBA player Sterling Brown for the 'crime' of parking in a disabled parking spot.

"But he got off easy," Camp said, given that police in the US have already killed over 400 people since the beginning of 2018.

In comparison, Lee explained, in the 12 months to April 2016, British cops discharged their weapons just seven times, with three people killed.

"They had only fired their guns seven times in a year! An average American cop discharges their weapons seven times just to open their beer can. When the little metal tab breaks off, you know, you gotta get the gun out. And then they fired three more times to celebrate once they get the beer open," Camp said.

Only in France: Two doctors fight each other in the operating room

surgery
Two doctors are risking disciplinary action after getting into a physical fight while their patient was still asleep on the theatre operating table.

An anaesthetist and urologist from the polyclinic of Lisieux (Calvados, Normandy) stand accused of fighting with each other during an operation on July 25, 2017.

A medical court in Caen heard that the anesthetist entered the operating theatre at around 18h, ready to supervise the wake-up of a patient that had been under anaesthetic during their operation.

Yet, the urologist surgeon said the operation had not yet finished, and that he was planning a final procedure.

According to the anaesthetist's lawyer, this is when problems began, since - he said - "this clinic does not treat emergencies, and we are not allowed to schedule any operations or procedures after 16h".

Tensions rose between the two doctors, with the surgeon accused of throwing a bottle of antiseptic solution into the anaesthetist's face.

'Are y'all serious?' Florida jury gives 4 cents to family of man killed by police

Gregory Vaughn Hill Jr. and family
© Miami Herald
In 2014, two officers with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office in Florida went to Gregory Vaughn Hill Jr.'s home for a noise complaint.

Hill, a 30-year-old black man, had been blasting an expletive-laden song by Drake, according to court testimony reviewed by CNN, and an unhappy woman who heard the song called officers to complain. The two deputies, including Christopher Newman, arrived to the house and knocked on the garage door, which Hill opened.

The officers exclaimed that the man had a gun, according to a lawsuit from Hill's family, and so the 30-year-old closed his door. Newman fired bullets through the garage door, hitting Hill once in the head and twice in the chest.

Hill, a father of three, died of those injuries.

Comment: What a grotesque travesty of justice! Even if the victim had a gun - which is not clear, as cops always claim their fatal victims had guns - how does him closing the door translate into a justification for shooting him?? And what sort of mockery is it to award 4 cents in compensation to the family??

In what's been called "the most racist jury 'award' in history," a Florida jury has decided there was really no problem with cops shooting and killing Gregory Vaughn Hill Jr., 30, in 2014 because he was playing music too loudly in his own garage while drunk. (Need we add, Hill was black?) The civil verdict marked the dismal end to a longstanding wrongful death suit filed by Hill's family in 2016, two years after St. Lucie County sheriff deputies turned up at Hill's house in Fort Pierce following complaints he'd been playing loud "F.U. music" in his garage as a nearby middle school was letting out for the day.

When Hill heard the cops knock, he opened the garage door, saw them, and began closing it again, at which point deputy Christopher Newman shot him three times - once in the head, twice in the abdomen - through the door, because everyone knows that according to the impeccable standards of American jurisprudence, getting drunk, playing music and closing a garage door are punishable by death without a trial. Police later claimed he'd had a gun they told him to drop - a claim never proved - and then said they'd found a gun (unloaded) in Hill's back pocket; they also determined his blood alcohol level was almost five times the legal limit for driving, though probably pretty close to that of many people getting drunk in their garage while listening to music.

Nonetheless, jurors found Newman, who had already cleared by a grand jury of criminal conduct, not guilty of "unreasonable, negligent and excessive" force under Florida's black-guys-are-scary law. Jurors were also asked to determine the amount of compensation to award Hill's three children for their loss; the family was seeking $500,000, but jurors instead opted to give them $4 total - $1 to his mother for his funeral expenses, and $1 to each of his children.

The grievous punchline: The jury unfathomably found Hill 99% liable for his own murder because "under the influence of alcoholic beverages to the extent that his normal faculties were impaired" - that death penalty offense again - thus reducing the family's award, and law enforcement's liability, to pennies. The family's attorney called the ruling "punitive"; Hill's family wants a new trial; his fiancée vowed to "keep fighting until I get some justice." On Facebook, the sheriff's office declared, "We are pleased to see this difficult and tragic incident come to a conclusion" and wished "everyone involved in the case the best." One concise comment summed up the general response: "Murderers."

A whopping 95.9 million Americans are no longer in the labor force

unemployment job board

Record low unemployment rate my fat ass!!!

Don't believe the BLS bullshit. Scanning the Household data proves it is bullshit. If the economy was booming the number of people not in the labor force would be declining, as discouraged people came back into the work force. From May 2017 through September 2017 that was actually happening. The number of people not in the labor force declined by 558,000. The participation rate increased to 63%. This was definitely positive economic news.

Since September 2017 the unemployment rate has supposedly fallen from 4.2% to 3.8%. Sounds awesome. But it's bullshit. Just the facts ma'am:

New jobs added since September 2017 - 1.15 million Number of people who have left the labor force since September 2017 - 1.435 million

Murdered by an Israeli sniper, Palestinian nurse Razan Al-Najjar is just an afterthought in the Western press

Painting of Razan al-Najjar immortalizing her service, by Omar Sommad.
Let's say Hamas fired a rocket that killed a young Israeli nurse while she was tending to the wounded from earlier rockets. Is there any doubt that the mainstream media would cover her death extensively, with photos, and interviews with friends and family?

But when Israeli snipers murdered a 21-year-old Palestinian nurse named Razan Al-Najjar yesterday, the mainstream media was nearly silent. Today's New York Times print edition only includes her as an afterthought, in a report by the usually reliable Rick Gladstone about Israel's latest defeat at the United Nations. Gladstone's article notes only that "A 21-year-old Palestinian health worker was killed. . ." Gladstone's editors could not be bothered to add her name, or to change the passive sentence to report who actually killed her.

By mid-morning in New York, the Times did start to rectify its error. A report went up, datelined KHUZAA, Gaza Strip, that includes basic background about this remarkable young woman, including an interview with her father, Ashram. A photograph shows desperate Gazans trying to carry her body to safety after the Israeli sniper shot her. The report did include a no comment from Israel's military spokesman, Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, who is normally voluble when he is inventing violence by Gazans.

Black Stanford student slams Black Lives Matter - 'white liberal in black face'

A Stanford University student makes strong remarks during a College Republicans event on Tuesday. Ebbie Banks tackled the Black Lives Matter movement, which he said he believes is contrary to black family goals.
Ebbie Banks, a black Stanford University student, took the spotlight during a College Republicans event on Tuesday night and railed against the Black Lives Matter movement, calling it "white liberals in black face."

What are the details?

On Thursday, The College Fix reported that Banks, a freshman, made the comments during a "Make Stanford Great Again" event hosted by the College Republicans, and featuring Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens.

During his remarks, Banks tackled the Black Lives Matter movement, which he said he believes is contrary to black family goals.

According to The College Fix, Banks believes that the movement "does not champion the need for strong black families with husbands and fathers as the role models."

During the Q&A portion of the event, Banks stood up and said, "I've been researching Black Lives Matter and I've been understanding the politics and how they are funded by white liberals."

"Recently," he continued, "I've been feeling like [Black Lives Matter is] white liberals in black face. ... It's because the white liberals are all about feminism, LGBT - white liberals don't really care about black people. I realize, white liberals don't really care about me, bro. I'm off the plantation, bro! I'm off the plantation, bro!"

71% of Brits think mass immigration has made their communities more divided

The vast majority of people think immigration has made communities more divided - 71% to be precise.

A Demos survey shows just 9% of people think immigration has made the communities where migrants have settled more united.
uk survey immigration
The numbers are even more stark in areas that have experienced high levels of migration. 78% of Brits in areas that have experienced large-scale migration say that it has made their community more divided.

It's obvious that, for the most part, people are not happy with the current mass migration policy that's been in full force in Britain for a good number of years now.

They feel their communities are more divided and a large number of people feel it's been bad for their area.

The next time a rabid lefty calls you 'far right' for wanting to reduce immigration, tell them that the vast majority of people agree with you.

Comment: It's because they're right. Immigration only works with integration. It's almost as if someone wanted to destroy and divide Western societies.

US reputation is in the crapper: 'It's incredibly expensive to be poor in America' - Redacted Tonight

Poor people
© Lucy Nicholson / Reuters
The Redacted Tonight team takes a look at the striking number of poor people - 40 million - living in the United States, despite the country having a reputation as being one of the wealthiest and most successful in the world.

"About 40 million live in poverty, 18.5 million in extreme poverty, and 5.3 million live in Third World conditions of absolute poverty," writes Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, in his new report.

"40 million continue to live in poverty. 40 million people! That's almost like the population of France. That's a lot. Or it's like 7 Irelands!" said the show's host, John F. O'Donnell.

The report says that, despite the US being among the world's most powerful and technologically-advanced nations, its inequality level is higher than in most European states, and that Americans "live shorter and sicker lives compared to those living in all other rich democracies." At the same time, the US is home to over 25 percent of the world's 2,208 billionaires.
