Along with Andrew Huang, his coauthor and fellow hacker, Snowden presented his research on phone "hardware introspection" at MIT, which aims to give users the ability to see whether their phone is sending out secret signals to an intelligence agency.
"This work aims to give journalists the tools to know when their smart phones are tracking or disclosing their location when the devices are supposed to be in airplane mode," the pair wrote in their technical paper.
Snowden, an ex-NSA contractor living in exile in Moscow, and Huang, a prominent hacker who has reverse-engineered the Xbox and other hardware, believe that their solution can protect journalists and activists from being betrayed by their smartphones.
All clear: Suspicious package at Israeli embassy in Manhattan triggers lockdown, bomb squad response
Officers at the scene are examining a suspicious package left in front of the Israeli consulate at East 42nd Street and Second Avenue, according to the NYC Scanner Twitter account. According to reports and photos on social media, streets around the Israeli Consulate building have been evacuated as a matter of precaution.

Police investigate the scene near an SUV in which a man suspected of causing a bomb scare barricaded himself, causing an hours-long standoff and the shutdown of a mid-Manhattan area in New York City, New York, U.S. July 21, 2016.
"I have a bomb strapped to me and I want to die," shouted Hector Meneses, as he was surrounded by SWAT teams, police negotiators, and bomb squads in Columbus Circle, one of NYC's signature spots.
Roads for hundreds of yards around the area were cordoned off, causing bewilderment and fear among early-rising New Yorkers.
It turned out to be an empty threat, and police apprehended the "disturbed" Meneses around 8am on Thursday morning, loading him onto a stretcher before sending him to hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. All that was found in his silver-colored SUV were 19 LED lights and wires, which officers claimed were apparently bought to build an imitation pressure cooker bomb, which was never completed.
A stolen boat crashed off the southern end of Marco Island in the Gulf of Mexico off of Southwest Florida on Sunday afternoon belongs to Walter Palmer, the Minnesota dentist who created a humanitarian firestorm last summer for boasting about his killing of Cecil, a popular African lion, police confirmed in a statement Thursday.
26-year-old Andrew Derwin, of Marco Island, was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of grand theft. Police arrested Derwin after he stole and crashed Palmer's boat off Caxambas Pass.
"He seems to have envisaged and developed his criminal plans several months before carrying them out," said Paris prosecutor Francois Molins, speaking in a news briefing. "The investigation since the night of July 14 has kept moving forward and allowed us not only to confirm again the premeditated nature of [killer] Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel's deadly act, but also to establish that he benefited from support and had accomplices in the preparation and carrying out of his criminal act."
Police have uncovered thousands of calls and messages between Lahouaiej Bouhlel, and five accomplices, after going through his social media accounts, laptop and phone records.
"Put 2,000 tons of metal in the truck, f**k the brakes, and I'll be watching," says one message sent to Lahouaiej Bouhlel in April.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame Star awarded to Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump is shown surrounded by a barb-wire wall in a piece by street artist Plastic Jesus in Hollywood, California July 19, 2016.
Featuring barbed wire, keep out signs (written in both Spanish and English) and American flags, it would be surprising to almost no one if Trump had commissioned the wall himself.
However it seems the 15cm wall is actually the work of a street artist known as 'Plastic Jesus'.
The Thursday resignation comes in response to allegations from former anchor Gretchen Carlson and other female employees.
Media magnate Chairman Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of 21st Century Fox, will become the acting CEO of Fox News and Fox Business Network in the wake of Ailes' resignation.
"Roger Ailes has made a remarkable contribution to our company and our country," Murdoch said in a statement. "Roger shared my vision of a great and independent television organization and executed it brilliantly over 20 great years."
Carlson brought a lawsuit against Fox News claiming that she was fired for refusing to sleep with Ailes and complaining about what she thought to be a discriminatory work environment. More women subsequently accused Ailes of inappropriate behavior that allegedly happened over the span of decades.
According to a police report, Tanya Hopper, 40, and Larry Webster, 55, were busted last Tuesday following the bizarre incident near the city of Joplin.
Responding to a 911 call about a naked man driving an orange lawn mower with a nude woman in his lap, Jasper County Sheriff's Office deputies encountered Hopper and Webster in front of a friend's residence. The riding lawn mower was parked outside the home.
During questioning, Hopper and Webster admitted to the naked mower ride. The suspects claimed that they had been skinny dipping at nearby Turkey Creek when their clothes were stolen by a man who emerged from the adjacent woods.
Instead of walking home nude, the duo said they opted to drive away on a mower they claimed to have found in the woods.
Would C4 have used a Hindu to report on the carnage at the Golden Temple of Amritsar...of course not
Anxious to know more about the Nice lorry massacre, I did something on Friday night I try to avoid: I watched Channel Four News.
After Jon Snow had conducted a poor interview with a young man who had come perilously close to death the action switched back to the London studio, where I could hardly believe my eyes.
The presenter was not one of the regulars — Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Matt Frei or Cathy Newman — but a young lady wearing a hijab.
Comment: He fails to mention who he thinks could provide balance in these difficult times, surely he can't mean Murdoch?
This article reportedly received 1,400 complaints, as of today The Sun has decided not to comment. Fatima replied to his comments here, and excerpts are quoted below.
"It's dangerous to regard Mr MacKenzie and those who echo his Islamophobic sentiments as mere pantomime villains. Their soapbox allows them to spread their ill-informed, irresponsible and malevolent invective to millions of readers. Racist and Islamophobic rhetoric has real consequences - lives have been lost and shattered in our own country."
"[He] has attempted to smear 1.6 billion Muslims in suggesting they are inherently violent. He has attempted to smear half of them further by suggesting they are helpless slaves. And he has attempted to smear me by suggesting I would sympathise with a terrorist."

Italy may be famous for its salami, but citizens of Turin will be encouraged to turn to vegetarian and vegan diets.
But Chiara Appendino, the new mayor of Turin and a force in the populist Five Star Movement (M5S), could be about to change all that with her pledge this week to promote vegetarian and vegan diets as a "priority" in her administration.
According to M5S's 62-page manifesto - which also called for better urban planning and the protection of public land - Turin's new mayor said the endorsement of meat-free and even dairy-free living was fundamental to the protection of the environment, health, and the wellbeing of animals.
Comment: It is meat terrorism. The WHO labeled meats as carcinogenic but this has been thoroughly debunked. If the mayor wants to see her consitituents have a poorer quality of life then pushing them into vegetarianism is certainly the way to go. With any luck, and a whole lot of common sense, this scheme will fail miserably. The mayor will likely carry on with her crazy agenda until she's sacked because you can't argue with these rabid vegetarians. Their brains don't work properly.
