A man "possessing an offensive weapon" has been arrested outside Paddington train station in central London, officials report.

The suspected attacker, a shirtless man, was arrested "for public disorder and possessing an offensive weapon," British Transport Police said.

"The incident is not being treated as terror related," officials added.

The man was "trying to attack an officer... while shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and other foreign words," an apparent eyewitness, Gary Miller, said on Twitter, posting a video of the incident.

A former victim of child sex abuse has ended her life under Dutch euthanasia laws because she could not live with her mental suffering.

The woman, in her twenties, was given a lethal injection after doctors and psychiatrists decided that her post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions were incurable.

It went ahead despite improvements in the woman's psychological condition after 'intensive therapy' two years ago, and even though doctors in the Netherlands accept that a demand for death from a psychiatric patient may be no more than a cry for help.

White supremacist hate group the Ku Klux Klan has seemingly been advertising a rally in upstate New York with a rebrand. It's now calling itself the Kool Kids Klub.

The notorious hate group was advertising a rally it plans on holding in Charlottesville, Virginia, in July.

A number of fliers were found, placed in driveways, in the upstate New York district of Fulton County. They were sealed in plastic bags with kitty litter inside to weigh them down. The offensive fliers refer to the "cultural genocide of white people" and say that "The Kool Kids Klub wants you."

A New Low: Israeli Blockade of Gaza Has Resulted in 'Humanitarian Shock'

Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip (file photo)
My last visit to Gaza had been in May 2014, just before Israel launched Operation Protective Edge, an assault that resulted in the deaths of more than two thousand Gazans - combatants and civilians - and the destruction of eighteen thousand homes. When I went back less than three years later the changes were evident everywhere. But two things struck me particularly: the now devastating impact of Gaza's decade-long isolation from the rest of the world, and the sense that an increasing number of people are reaching the limit of what they can endure.

Gaza is in a state of humanitarian shock, due primarily to Israel's blockade, supported by the US, the EU and Egypt and now entering its 11th year. Historically a place of trade and commerce, Gaza has relatively little production left, and the economy is now largely dependent on consumption. Although a recent easing of Israeli restrictions has led to a slight increase in agricultural exports to the West Bank and Israel - long Gaza's principal markets - they are not nearly enough to boost its weakened productive sectors. Gaza's debility, carefully planned and successfully executed, has left almost half the labour force without any means to earn a living. Unemployment - especially youth unemployment - is the defining feature of life. It now hovers around 42 per cent (it has been higher), but for young people (between the ages of 15 and 29) it stands at 60 per cent. Everyone is consumed by the need to find a job or some way of earning money. 'Salaries control people's minds,' one resident said.

A Muslim peace march against Islamist extremism and terrorism in Cologne organized by prominent Muslim public figures was attended by a much smaller number of participants than expected. The organizers, however, are planning new actions.

The march, held under the slogan, "Not with us," took place in the center of the German city of Cologne on Saturday and started at 13:00 local time (12:00 GMT). It was organized by a group of prominent German Muslim public figures, including Lamya Kaddor, an Islamic scholar and author, and Tarek Mohamad, a Muslim peace activist.

Mali: 2 dead and hostages seized in terrorist attack at luxury resort

French and Malian special forces are conducting a joint military operation after suspected jihadists stormed a luxury resort in Dougourakoro, Western Mali. Mali's security minister has confirmed two fatalities so far, AFP reports.

"The first victim was a French-Gabonese citizen. We are in the process of confirming the other's nationality," said Baba Cisse, a security ministry spokesman, as cited by Reuters.

Approximately 20 hostages seized in the Bamako resort attack have been freed, according to the Malian security minister, as cited by AFP.

Gunmen attacked the Campement Kangaba luxury resort in Dougourakoro, near the capital, Bamako, on Sunday afternoon, though the security operation is still under way, according to the Malian Security Ministry. The resort is a popular destination for expats and western tourists alike.

Comment: There is more to this jihadist insurgency than meets the eye: The conflict in Mali has nothing to do with fighting terrorists
If this battle is not for ideological reasons then what is it for? The answer, however cynical, is simple. Resources. Mali is rich in resources, from uranium to gold. It is an African kingdom that has historically been known for its mass of gold reserves and more recently the possibility of further oil and uranium exploration. Had the rebels expressed their love of the West and outlined their intentions to open up Mali's market to foreign companies (allowing the leaching of resources), we would not have heard a word of objection from France, the United Kingdom or any other power. Instead, we are greeted with the scramble to take a big slice out of this African cake. Everyone is rushing to fight 'terrorists' in Mali. France is ensuring energy security. There should be no disruption in the flow of uranium through France's nuclear reactors. The so-called rebels are bad for business.

Saudi dignitary uses diplomatic immunity to avoid prosecution for death of German cyclist

Cyclists attend memorial vigil for killed cyclist.
A Saudi diplomat will not face prosecution for negligent manslaughter after he opened the door of his Porsche suddenly on Tuesday, hitting a 55-year-old cyclist who later died from severe head trauma sustained in the accident.
"I don't care if he's a diplomat or not," the man's widow Marina told Bild newspaper. "He should get his just punishment," she said. "Micha was always worried about this road. He said there would be an accident," she added.
The German authorities can only formally expel the 50-year-old diplomat or request that the Saudi government waive his immunity so that he can be prosecuted.

The Saudi embassy published a statement expressing condolences for the family on Friday. Saudi Arabian Chargé D'Affaires Adnan Bustaji also visited the family of the deceased on Friday, according to a statement issued by the Saudi Press Agency.

In 2016, diplomats committed 22,816 traffic violations in Berlin, including speeding and parking offences, and were involved in 60 accidents, of which 28 resulted in injuries. Of those offenses, 735 were committed by Chinese diplomats, 697 by Russian, and 683 by those from Saudi Arabia, Tagesspiegel reports. Diplomatic immunity costs Berlin hundreds of thousands of euros in uncollectable fines.

The incident came just two days after 100,000 cyclists took over the streets of Berlin during the annual ADFC-Sternfahrt to protest for better conditions throughout Germany.

Comment: The number of infractions committed by diplomats or dignitaries absolved by 'diplomatic immunity' is a gross by-stepping of responsibility and negates a common-sense filtering of personal actions by 'the privileged one.'

Trump administration's proposed cuts to civil rights enforcement causes 'grave concerns'

budget

A civil rights watchdog has launched a two-year probe into the Trump administration's federal civil rights enforcement, citing "grave concerns" over proposed budget cuts resulting in a "dangerous reduction of civil rights enforcement." The bipartisan US Commission on Civil Rights agency has "grave concerns" over recent budget and personnel cuts announcements made by civil rights departments.
The "proposed cuts would result in a dangerous reduction of civil rights enforcement across the country, leaving communities of color, LGBT people, older people, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups exposed to greater risk of discrimination," the statement read. The commission will "examine the degree to which current budgets and staffing levels allow civil rights offices to perform their statutory and regulatory functions."
The group's statement highlights a number of concerning proposed staff and budget cuts across a number of government agencies. It describes the Justice Department's decision to place US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in courthouses as "a dangerous impediment to access to justice for all Americans." It also points to the proposed 121 positions being cut in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

Comment: What are the effective outcomes of spending more or less on civil rights enforcement? All opinions are based on current/recent past numbers which are arbitrary to say the least. If those numbers were higher or lower than the actuals, the argument against reduction would still be the same. The concept is flawed. What is the dollar value for elimination of discrimination? More money doesn't equate positive societal change. A civil society needs to rise to the occasion and regulate itself as to civil rights and human acknowledgement. Enforcement and prosecution should never have to be the leverage for common decency and equality for all. Putting effort into creating a vibrant national economy, where workers are able to hold a solid income, could begin to ease the need for already extensive governmental support of various grant programs and subsidies.

US Drug Enforcement Administration facilitated the massacre of an entire town

DEA Town
The 2011 massacre carried out by the Zetas drug cartel in Allende, Mexico was a shocking reminder of the brutality of the black market, which thrives under governmental drug prohibition. The war on drugs does nothing to actually reduce drug supply or consumption, but it does keep the police state and cartels thriving, perhaps most notably the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

While stealing property from innocent people and ruining lives in the homeland, the DEA spreads its tentacles all over the world in its drug war crusade. This form of U.S. meddling, while contributing to corruption and economic sabotage in host countries, also has deadly consequences - including sparking the infamous Allende massacre.

An investigative report by ProPublic and National Geographic - barely mentioned in the mainstream media - describes how a gamble by the DEA in Mexico led to the Zetas cartel invading Allende and other towns to carry out mass murder and destruction.

Art mirrors life: Shakespeare's Julius Caesar as Donald Trump
The Shakespeare in the Park rendition of Julius Caesar is still scheduled to play this weekend in Central Park after the shooting of GOP Rep. Scalise by a devout Bernie Sanders supporter.

This year's play "Julius Caesar" depicts President Donald Trump's assassination.

The New York Times and CNN's parent company Time Warner are standing by their sponsorship of a play that depicts the brutal assassination of President Donald Trump, raising the question of whether the news reporting outlets should retain their credentials to cover and have access to President Trump. Delta Airlines and Bank of America have reportedly dropped their support for the play in the wake of public outrage over the play's depiction of Trump's assassination.

Tonight the performance did not go as planned.
