Egyptian judoka jeered, refuses to shake Israeli opponent's hand

Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby was loudly booed at the Olympic Games for refusing to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent, Or Sasson, at the end of their first-round match. The Israeli defeated the Egyptian with two throws to claim victory, with around 90 seconds remaining in the contest. El Shehaby lay flat on his back for a moment before standing to take his place across from Sasson.

The Israeli fighter offered his hand, but El Shehaby shook his head and backed away. The referee called the Egyptian back to the mat and instructed him to bow. El Shehaby gave a quick nod of his head before leaving.

The International Judo Federation (IJF) said the fact that the fight even took place was a major sign of progress. Spokesman Nicolas Messner said judokas were under no obligation to shake hands, but bowing is compulsory. Messner confirmed that the IJF would review El Shehaby's conduct to determine if any further action should be taken.

El Shehaby had come under pressure in the run-up to the fight to pull out. The Egyptian Olympic Committee warned El Shehaby that his citizenship would be revoked if he withdrew from the bout, but fans still made their feelings known on social media.

One of three British teenagers referred to as "Jihadi Brides," who left their families to join the violent Daesh extremist group, is believed to have been killed in an airstrike in Raqqa, according to a lawyer for the teen's family. Kadiza Sultana, one of three London teenagers who abandoned both family and A-level courses in the town of Bethnal Green of London Borough, joined Daesh, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries.

According to Tasnime Akunjee, the lawyer for the Sultana family, the teen is believed to have been killed during an airstrike on Raqqa, the de-facto capital of Daesh. According to media reports, the airstrike was conducted by Russian air forces several weeks ago. According to Akunjee, Sultana's family received reports of her death from sources in Raqqa a few weeks ago, but have not been able to independently confirm the details. The fate of the teen remains unknown.

Was NYPD beating or beaten, scuffle is not the whole story

Darrell Simmons

A short video of two NYPD officers aided by a bystander repeatedly punching a prone black suspect in the head as witnesses plead for them to stop is causing uproar on social media. However, the NYPD says the full story paints the opposite picture.

The 27-second clip posted on Instagram by hocus45th on Friday accompanied by the caption "F*** THE POLICE" is said to have originally been filmed on May 4 of this year. The fight between the officers from the Bronx Warrants Squad and the suspect, who was identified as Darnell Simmons, 27, broke out in a McDonald's in the Bronx, police have confirmed.

Simmons, who at the time of the filming does not appear to be resisting or show any attempt to escape, is seen being held down by one of the detectives and an assisting restaurant customer, while another NYPD officer brutally pounds on the suspect's head.

Comment: If what the officers say is true, that Simmons was the attacker, it isn't evident on the available short video clip. Instead we see Simmons being unnecessarily brutalized. Either the officers are misrepresenting the incident, or this is a handy editing of a seven-minute scuffle to give a biassed impression to incite social media...which it did. We need to question what we see; it isn't always the whole story. Regardless, there is still no excuse for the subsequent relentless pounding displayed by the captors of this already subdued and passive suspect.

Study: Worldwide commercial air crashes are increasing

Aircraft
Nearly two airplanes have crashed every year since 2010, making the past six years one of the darkest periods for commercial passenger transport the world over, according to Mark D Martin Llc, a US-based aerospace consulting firm. Including the incidence of Emirates Airline crash-landing on 3 August, data compiled by the firm indicates 11 crashes since 2010. This includes only commercial airliner aircraft crashes and not business jets, private aircraft and helicopters.

Of these, three mishaps (including the latest one), occurred in 2016 alone. The Boeing 777 flight crash-landed at Dubai air strip after its attempt to "go-around" went horribly wrong due to a sudden change in winds. A "go-around" means aborting a landing at the last minute to go up again and attempt a safe landing for the second time. On 19 March, a Flydubai Boeing 737-800 flight FZ-981 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to Russia's Rostov-on-Don with 55 passengers and seven crew members crashed on the destination site leaving no survivors. On 19 May, an Egypt Air flight MS804 with 66 people on board crashed into the Mediterranean.

Over 100 Syrian civilians killed in Aleppo during month of August

Over 100 civilians have been killed and 700 have been injured since the start of August as a result of shelling in the Syrian city of Aleppo, local authorities told Russian journalists. There are women and children among the dead. The south of the city has been most affected, with over a dozen people having been killed in the area earlier this week when a gas bomb hit a passenger bus and a local market was shelled.

Russia formed seven round-the-clock humanitarian corridors across Aleppo this month to allow safe passage for civilians and militants wishing to lay down arms.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups. On February 27, a US-Russia brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria. Terrorist groups such as Daesh, as well as Jabhat Fatah al Sham (formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, or Nusra Front) are not part of the deal. Both groups are banned in Russia and a range of other countries.

Armed man with knife attacks passengers on Swiss train, injuries reported

According to AFP, an armed man has attacked Swiss train passengers, injuring at least seven people.

At least seven passengers were injured on a train in Switzerland after a man attacked them with a knife, AFP reports citing police sources.

A man reportedly set a train carriage on fire and then stabbed several passengers, police say. Swiss media report that a six year old child might be among those injured during the attack.

Comment: Update, with more details from RT:
The attack happened at 2:20 p.m. local time as the train was traveling between the towns of Buchs and Sennwald, located in northeast Switzerland. According to Radio FM1, the perpetrator spilled the flammable liquid on a female passenger and then set it on fire.

"Apart from a large presence of St. Gallen canton police, fire brigades, three helicopters and two emergency doctors," have been dispatched to the site of the attack, police said.

Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the case and are looking into possible motives for the attack.

"We do not know where the man entered the train and whether he knew some of the passengers," Krüsi said. Law enforcers were not able to talk to the train driver in the immediate aftermath of the assault since the person "was in shock and could not provide any details."

"A crime of passion" is one of the possibilities the Swiss police is currently investigating, Reuters reports. The outlet adds that, according to the police spokesperson, "a terrorism background still seems very, very far-fetched."

Bend the bars: US inmates organizing nationwide strike in protest of prison slavery

prison cell black fist
As prisoners prepare for a nationwide prison strike, activists and supporters are descending on Columbus, Ohio for the Bend The Bars conference.

On September 9, prisoners across the United States will participate in coordinated work stoppage and hunger strikes in an attempt to what they view as prison slavery. The nationwide action is the result of years of frustration and organizing by prisoners and their support networks outside of the prison bars.
To every prisoner in every state and federal institution across this land, we call on you to stop being a slave, to let the crops rot in the plantation fields, to go on strike and cease reproducing the institutions of your confinement.

This is a call for a nationwide prisoner work stoppage to end prison slavery, starting on Sept. 9, 2016. They cannot run these facilities without us.

Comment: The prisoners certainly have legitimate grievances. A non-violent, organized protest may lead to some reforms on the inside but it seems that the entire (in)justice system is so broken and corrupt only a complete overhaul will bring any lasting change.

Texas woman issued a warrant for selling homemade tamales to her neighbors

tamales
In modern day police state, USA, exchanging goods and services is a crime unless the state gets their cut. So, even though a Carrollton mother was "stunned" to find a warrant issued for her arrest for selling tamales to her neighbors — it was to be expected.

This week, Dennise Cruz was shocked to receive a yellow postcard from the City of Carrollton stating that if she doesn't immediately submit to their extortion demands, then she would be kidnapped and locked in a cage.

"That has to be wrong. I don't have any tickets under my name. That's just my first reaction. Never would have I thought, tamales," said Cruz in an interview with CBS DFW. "To know that somebody can be arrested over that, that to me is unbelievable.".

The yellow ticket was a "warrant arrest notice" stemming from Cruz' illegal activity a few months prior. Cruz, obviously a hardened criminal worthy of police action, decided to make her famous tamales and post them on the app Nextdoor for sale. Her neighbors loved them.

Mississippi removes children from home for 'doing too much homework' and because '8-year-old knows how to use microwave'

A Mississippi couple lost custody of their five children for making them do "excessive" homework and having too short "punishment" haircuts, among other unproven accusations. It took them months of legal battles with the state to get their children back. Details of this social services horror story would have stayed inside the family of Jennifer and Scott Berry, had it not been uncovered by the Biloxi-based Sun Herald.

Over two years after winning a case against Mississippi Department of Human Services, the couple and their children are still struggling to get back to life as usual. "All I could do was replay their leaving in my mind and see their crying faces and hear their voices, confused and afraid," Jennifer Berry said. The Berrys' five children - one mutual son and four kids from their previous relationships - were taken away and split up between foster families in March of 2014, for what the state officials called was "isolation or mental maltreatment".

The DHS started making visits to the Berrys after receiving an anonymous report. Social workers said they had to investigate it to prove that children were not victims of child abuse or neglect. "They never actually said what the actual accusation was," Scott Berry told the newspaper. The Berrys later learned that someone complained that the family had no food at home and made their minor children cook their own meals.

Having conducted a thorough search of the house, the DHS workers interviewed children one by one - all of whom are minors - behind closed doors, without parents' consent and supervision. Though the DHS had given the family positive recommendations in an adoption case just months prior, following that visit, the agency was now ordering the Berrys to hand over their six-year old daughter to a relative.

Comment: The average family has little to no recourse against the "isolation or mental maltreatment" done by the state to children like these. These abusive tactics have become all too common and states' child welfare officials are rarely, if ever, held accountable.

Guccifer 2.0 hacks again: Releases Democrat passwords, phone numbers, claims responsibility for previous hacks

The hacker calling himself 'Guccifer 2.0' says he broke into the computers of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, making public their password lists, cell phone numbers, and many campaign documents.

"As you see the U.S. presidential elections are becoming a farce, a big political performance where the voters are far from playing the leading role. Everything is being settled behind the scenes as it was with Bernie Sanders," the hacker wrote on his blog. "I wonder what happened to the true democracy, to the equal opportunities, the things we love the United States for."

"The [mainstream media] are producing tons of propaganda hiding the real stuff behind it. But I do believe that people have right to know what's going on inside the election process in fact," the hacker wrote. "To make a long story short, here are some DCCC docs from their server. Make use of them."
