China's largest genomics firm has hit back at assertions it shares data from a popular prenatal test kit with the country's military, branding the claims raised in a Reuters report "deeply disappointing" and "factually incorrect."

In the article published on Wednesday, Reuters contended that Shenzhen-based BGI Group could be sharing data collected from its NIFTY (or non-invasive fetal trisomy) test - used by more than eight million women worldwide - with Chinese authorities when it was "directly relevant to national security or national defense security."

Citing a number of "publicly available documents," the agency also reported that the company had "collaborated with the People's Liberation Army (PLA)" to develop and improve the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), which screens early pregnancy blood samples for fetal abnormalities.

Trust the science? More than half of scientists admit to research misconduct, landmark survey with 6,800+ participants reveals

A major survey conducted across academia in the Netherlands has found that more than a half of scientists admitted to engaging in some type of questionable research practice in their work.

The landmark study was conducted through the Dutch National Survey on Research Integrity, funded by the Dutch government.

The scientists sent out anonymized questionnaires to nearly 63,780 academics working in 22 universities and research centers across the Netherlands. The survey asked about various questionable research practices, ranging from insufficient attention to equipment and the use of unsuitable measurement instruments to improper citations and unfair reviews of manuscripts.

Comment: This is one reason why blindly "trust[ing] the science" is a questionable strategy. There are corruptions of science at multiple levels, including right down to the scientists who do the studies. Everything must be questioned - including 'the science'.

People gather in front of a huge rainbow balloon put up by members of Amnesty International and Hatter, an NGO promoting LGBT rights, at Hungary's parliament in Budapest, Hungary, July 8, 2021.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared on Thursday that his country would bar LGBT+ activists from schools under a new law restricting promotion of homosexuality, despite pressure from the EU to rescind the legislation.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Orban responded to the European Commission's decision to open an inquiry into the country over the legislation that prohibits the promotion of homosexuality within schools.

"The European Parliament and the European Commission want that we let LGBTQ activists and organisations into the kindergartens and schools. Hungary does not want that," Orban said, standing by the legislation.

'Won't go back into the building': Reporters who 'SURVIVED' Capitol riot mocked as Vice says they're still struggling with trauma

Shane Jason Woods (center in black coat) is one of four alleged Capitol rioters who have been charged with crimes involving the press, such as destroying camera equipment.
The Capitol Hill press corps found little sympathy on social media after Vice News posted an article saying that some journalists remain so traumatized by the January 6 riot that they're undergoing therapy and struggling to sleep.

In fact, Tuesday's Vice article said, some of the reporters who "survived" the riot still won't even go back into the Capitol to do their jobs, despite the fact they continue to cover Congress. "One longtime Capitol Hill reporter opted for early retirement shortly after living through the riot," the media outlet said.

Bloomberg News reporter Erik Wasson told Vice that he's suffering from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and he fears that such an incident will happen again. "It feels like one of those horror movies, like the end of 'Jaws,'" he said. "Everything feels copacetic on the beach, but you wonder if there's anything out there."

Comment: Reporters definitely used to be made of sterner stuff than this. Whether they've bought into the hype about the events of January 6th, or are simply basking in the glory of being a "survivor," their response is disingenuous. Things may have been a little hairy at times during the event, but this was hardly on the ground war reporting. If grandmas snapping selfies and people walking unimpeded into a building causes "trauma," you're probably in the wrong business.

The homes of two alleged accomplices were searched in Germany
German police announced Wednesday they raided the homes of two alleged accomplices of the November 2020 terror attack in Vienna that left four dead and more than 20 injured.

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe said the two accused, Blinor S., a national of Kosovo, and Drilon G., a German national, are believed to have had advanced knowledge of the attack and failed to report that such an attack was imminent.

The raids were carried out in their homes in Osnabrück and Kassel.

Before Kujtim Fejzulai, a dual citizen of Austria and North Macedonia, was killed by police following the attack, the two alleged accomplices visited him for several days in July 2020. Shortly before their visit, Fejzulai acquired the weapon he used in the attack.

Chicago Police officers stand at a crime scene in Chicago, Ill., November 1, 2017.
A Chicago police officer and two Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents were shot on Wednesday morning amid a rise in shootings in the city.

Chicago Police superintendent David Brown told reporters at a press conference that the officer and two agents were working an undercover operation. The three were traveling in the same unmarked car and were shot while attempting to merge onto a freeway near the 22nd Chicago Police District headquarters.
"One of the ATF agents was hit in the hand, another was hit in the side/torso area, and our Chicago police officer [was] hit in the back of the head" in a "graze wound," Brown said.
All three officers were hospitalized in stable condition, and none have life-threatening injuries.

Brown noted that the Chicago officer is the 36th member of Chicago police to be shot so far this year. Brown could not reveal whether police believed there to be one or multiple suspects, but said they were not in custody at this point.

Opinion: What is Trump to Us?

To be worthy of following, post-Trump leadership must become consistent in deed with the insight that vaulted Donald Trump to public attention.
Donald Trump
Donald Trump became the political vehicle for the American people's resentment of an overweening, corrupt ruling class. Trump's invaluable contribution to the Republic was to lead Americans publicly to disrespect that class.

Americans elected Trump to preserve freedoms and prosperity against the encroachments of that class. But instead, he became the catalyst by which that class cohered to transform the American Republic into an oligarchy.

During Trump's presidency, more wealth passed from ordinary Americans to oligarchs, and more freedoms were lost than anyone imagined possible. As we consider how to remedy these losses, Trump's fateful combination of things said and unsaid, of things done and not done, must be part of our search for the persons and policies most likely to lead republican Americans out of our quandary.

UK schools are 'overtly' politicising sex & gender issues - British education watchdog warns

British education watchdog Ofsted has warned that schools are using "overtly political materials" to instruct students on sex, sexual orientation and gender reassignment due to "increasing political sensitivities" in these areas.

Recent research by Ofsted into how gender issues are taught in schools found that staff sometimes "inadvertently" include political material in their classes.

Summarising the findings, Ofsted corporate strategy director Chris Jones identified one such instance in which schools and parents did not "see eye-to-eye" on the "content and age-appropriateness" of materials used to teach primary school children about same-sex relationships.

Comment: Laws suddenly being rolled out across Europe may make it increasingly difficult for schools to resist the warped ideological propaganda:

Twitter bemoans 'snowflake generation' after UK regulator re-rates 'violent', 'discriminatory' films such as Rocky and Flash Gordon

Sly "Rocky" Stallone gestures during the filming of his movie Rocky 6
Classics films including Star Wars, Rocky and Flash Gordon have had their content advisory ratings ratcheted up by Britain's film-screening board, in what has been described as a victory for 'woke' culture.

In a newly-released report outlining its activities during 2020, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) explained why it issued new ratings for popular titles such as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Rocky, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring and Flash Gordon.

The organisation reclassified several fan favourites from Parental Guidance (PG) to 12A, meaning no child under the age of 12 should watch without adult supervision. Films with PG ratings are considered appropriate for children around eight and up.

For example, the iconic 1976 boxing drama Rocky was initially given a PG rating, but its 2020 theatrical re-release was slapped with a 12A label for "moderate violence, mouthed strong language and domestic abuse."

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was similarly "reclassified upwards" to 12A for moderate fantasy violence, bringing it in line with the other two films in the trilogy.
