Society's Child
Time has long abandoned the pretense of giving the award to truly great people, full of personality and talents, and who influence events. Alas, the time of grandeur, discipline and vision is over. Time is no longer the serious magazine of importance that it once was. People no longer want to make an effort to know, admire, and appreciate grand figures. We easily tire of greatness.
Greta a Perfect Fit
In this sense, the award to Greta Thunberg fits perfectly. In our shallow and mediocre times, today's figures must not be too deep or complex. They must not be connected to any historical or religious narrative outside of their own evolving story. Their speech must be Twitter-friendly. The new models need not be exceptional as long as they defy standard definitions. Time typically picks those who can link themselves to all the liberal causes in vogue.
Khan, a Muslim, posted the picture of he and his wife Faryal Makhdoom, along with their two daughters, dressed in pyjama bottoms and t-shirts reading 'Daddy Deer' to mark Christmas Day on Wednesday, but has apparently spent the next hours siphoning through his notifications after a string of offensive replies.
Having had his fill of the criticism, the former Olympic silver medalist then took to Twitter to hit back at his Christmas critics - and was backed by several prominent names on the social media platform.
Known as Bolivia's Chapare region, the Tropico of Cochabamba is a sanctuary for elected President Evo Morales' most dedicated base of support. Since the November 10 coup, it has effectively become a self-governing territory where the military junta is absent.
The police and military were sent in full retreat from this area the coup began and were told they would only be welcomed back if the they "get on their knees and apologize" to the community.
In this 12,000 square kilometer swath of land, hundreds of unions have flourished over the years. I spent several days with the union rank and file, witnessing how they run society in a collective fashion, and how they have organized ferocious resistance to a right-wing coup government that threatens to destroy them.
Despite the resilience on display here, there is also a sense of dread. Union leaders told me that if the state decides to militarize the region, as it has threatened, a bloodbath is practically inevitable. If the violent crackdown arrives, it could unravel a social structure they have been steadily constructing for decades.
Michael J. Reynolds, 26, who works patrol in Manhattan for NYPD, was charged with assault and aggravated burglary after the July 2018 break-in. In September he pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated criminal trespassing and three counts of assault for his role in the attack.
During a more than two-hour sentencing hearing Friday, four witnesses — the victim, two of her neighbors and Reynolds — took the stand in Davidson County Criminal Court.
It ended with Reynolds getting about two weeks in jail and three years probation.
Conese Halliburton, who said she was home with her four sons — two who were 8 and 11 at the time — recalled Reynolds kicking in the front door of her 12 South-area home and charging in in the middle of the night. Video surveillance taken from a neighbor's RING camera showed Reynolds screaming and threatening the family and using racial slurs.

Palestinian Christians take part in the Greek Orthodox Christian Palm Sunday celebrations at St.Porphyrios Church in Gaza City, on 24 April, 2016
The Israeli occupation authorities decreed this week that none of Gaza's small Christian population will be allowed to visit their holy sites in Jerusalem or Bethlehem over the Christmas period. This is pure hypocrisy from the self-proclaimed "only democracy in the Middle East", which is actually so undemocratic and so racist that while Jews and Christians from around the world are allowed to visit those same religious sites, native Palestinians are barred from doing so in their own country.
This is not the first time that Israel has imposed such arbitrary restrictions on Palestinian Christians by any means. Bans are often in place, not only at Christmas but also Easter. It is part of the wider Israeli policy of denying Palestinians freedom of movement and equal access to their religious sites. The same cruel collective punishments are also imposed on Palestinian Muslims during their religious festivals.
Man dead after alleged excessive force by Sonoma County police who thought he had stolen his own car

Body camera footage released by the Sonoma Sheriff in Northern California shows Sonoma County Deputies taking David Ward into custody on Nov. 28, 2019.
A vehicle owner ended up dead after alleged excessive force by police who thought he had stolen his own car. Now, two Sonoma County, California, sheriff's deputies are on paid administrative leave.
The bizarre incident was captured on body camera footage that was released by Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick.
"If you watched the body-worn camera closely, you may be concerned by what you saw," Essick said in a Dec. 20 video posted on the Sonoma County Police Department's social media accounts. "So was I."
Mexico's Foreign Ministry sounded the alarm on Monday, claiming that Bolivia's security and intelligence apparatus has been monitoring the diplomatic mission since the country granted political asylum to Morales last month. The deposed leader lost the support of his police and military in early November, after the opposition declared his re-election in October fraudulent. Morales was ousted despite announcing a fresh general election.
The ministry alleges that around 150 Bolivian police and intelligence agents have "surrounded" the Mexican ambassador's residence since Friday, and that these police and agents have intimidated and spied on Mexican diplomatic personnel.
The local lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community had plans to hold an event on January 1 in the regional capital located 327 kilometers west of Kyiv.
The ban, initiated by the head of the council's budget committee, city councilman Oleh Karpyak of the nationalist Svoboda party, cited the Family Code as justification.

The 33-year-old victim, a bed-ridden woman suffering from multiple sclerosis, was brought to the court on a wheel chair and refused to compromise the matter.
Asserting that he has gender dysphoria since childhood and identifying himself as a woman before the court, the accused alleged that the relation between him and the complainant was that of two "sisters", so he could not have molested her.
Gender dysphoria is a condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex.
The jury ruled 9-3 late Friday, denying 56-year-old Vickie Forrest's allegation that more than 30 years of use of the talcum-based powder caused her illness. Forrest, of St. Louis, was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer in 2012 and is in remission after surgery and chemotherapy, her attorneys said.
"It's disappointing that J&J is going to see this as approval of their continued sale of talc-based baby powder that harms women," Ted Meadows, one of Forrest's lawyers, said in a statement.
