But federal stimulus payments approved by Congress and the Trump administration helped keep more than 5 million Americans out of poverty, the bureau said.
Last year, 11.4 percent of Americans — or 37.2 million people — were living in poverty, a threshold that stands at $26,246 in yearly income for a family of four. That share was up 1 percent, or 3.3 million people, over the previous year.

ABTA has called for the UK to abolish PCR testing demands on UK travellers as part of efforts to help the travel sector recover
The body said a survey of its membership showed that 69% of employers planned to let staff go after 30 September.
It blamed "overly-cautious" coronavirus restrictions on travel in the UK, saying they had hammered demand during the peak summer season and inflicted huge damage on the industry's chances of recovery as a result.
ABTA said that it expected almost 100,000 people in the sector, including airlines, to have either lost their jobs or walked away during the Covid pandemic once the Job Retention Scheme was closed.
The figure rose to 226,000 when the employment impact on the supply chain was factored in, its report said.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), appears at the 2021 Met Gala maskless in her highly fashionable and subversive gown, as masked workers and servants surround her, ensuring her safety and a smoothly running party, on September 13, 2021 in New York City.
Most of those transgressions were too flagrant to ignore and thus produced some degree of scandal and resentment for the political officials granting themselves such license. Dominant liberal culture is, if nothing else, fiercely rule-abiding: they get very upset when they see anyone defying decrees from authorities, even if the rule-breaker is the official who promulgated the directives for everyone else. Photos released last November of California Governor Gavin Newsom giggling maskless as he sat with other maskless state health officials celebrating the birthday of a powerful lobbyist — just one month after he told the public to "to keep your mask on in between bites" and while severe state-imposed restrictions were in place regarding leaving one's home — caused a drop in popularity and helped fueled a recall initiative against him. Newsom and these other officials broke their own rules, and even among liberals who venerate their leaders as celebrities, rule-breaking is frowned upon.

JK Rowling received death threats after commenting on trans issues.
I wanted to add my voice to those supporting Rowling. I wanted to tweet #IStandwithJKRowling. But I did not. I am running for City Council in Lower Manhattan, and as a candidate for office, I didn't want to risk being called transphobic. So I chose silence.

The data exposure potentially affects millions of people who used — or continue to use — Walgreens' Covid-19 testing services over the course of the pandemic.
Multiple security experts told Recode that the vulnerabilities found on the site are basic issues that the website of one of the largest pharmacy chains in the United States should have known to avoid. Walgreens has promoted itself as a "vital partner in testing," and the company is reimbursed for those tests by insurance companies and the government.

"I think we have to be more blunt, we have to be more forceful, we have to say something coming out, you know you don't get vaccinated, you know you're going to die. I mean, let's just be really blunt to these people."
Comment: Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center released a statement debunking rumors that the hospital was inaccurately reporting coronavirus hospitalizations to mislead the public, WECT reports.
The viral video features the director of marketing and a doctor who served as the former chief of medical staff for New Hanover Regional Medical Center talking about what information related to coronavirus the hospital shares with the public.See Also:
Dr. Mary Rudyk said she feels the hospital's messaging needs to be "a little more scary for the public."
She tells the marketing director that the hospital should provide information to the public about post-COVID-19 hospitalizations, which the hospital was defining as recovered even if they were still hospitalized, the video says.
The social media outrage surrounded this suggestion as many saw it was proof for conspiracy theories about how health officials deliberately inflate COVID-19 numbers. The video circulated in prominent community groups and pages, like the New Hanover County Schools Association of Parents and Teachers.
In a statement, Novant Health told WECT News that they were not releasing data for patients, "who remain hospitalized for COVID-19 complications even though they are no longer COVID-19 positive, so it does not provide a complete picture of the total impact of COVID-19 on our patients and on our hospitals."
The spokesperson also told WECT that they were "concerned with the amount of misinformation in our communities," saying:"The team members involved in this excerpt of an internal meeting are seeing the highest level of COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths so far in this pandemic - despite having safe and effective vaccines widely available. This was a frank discussion among medical and communications professionals on how we can more accurately convey the severity and seriousness of what's happening inside of our hospitals and throughout our communities. On New Hanover Regional's Facebook page there are dozens of comments of people who are questioning the hospital's data.
We continue to be concerned with the amount of misinformation in our communities and consistently strive for more ways to be transparent and tell the whole story. The continued rise of hospitalizations makes it evident that we have more work to do to reach our communities with these messages.""I just watched a video where your staff basically said we need to lie and skew the numbers of COVID-19 patients so that you can scare people and tell them to get vaccinated or they will die," one person said who commented on the hospital's Facebook page. "I'd sure like to know where the money passes. Lying and trying to scare people ? Why would anybody want to trust your hospital"Rudyk said in the video that the hospital needed to be blunt with their messaging."If you don't get vaccinated, you know you're going to die," she said. "Let's just be really blunt to these people."Health officials said on Thursday that eight additional COVID-19 deaths were reported in the first week of September, bringing the total number of New Hanover county residents who have died from COVID-19 to 213.
Around 56% of the county is fully vaccinated, data from the state Department of Health says."We're seeing a large increase in our COVID patients. They're being admitted sicker, we're admitting them faster than our prior surge," said Keisha Coleman, an ICU nurse with New Hanover Regional.

The Taliban co-founder and now deputy prime minister of Afghanistan released an audio statement on Monday saying he was alive and well after news of his supposed demise went viral on social media.
Abdul Ghani Baradar, who was last week named as a number two to Mullah Mohammed Hassan Akhund, blamed "fake propaganda" for the death rumours in an audio message posted by the Taliban.
The 36-second video, which was obtained by the Washington Examiner, was posted a week ago. It's unclear when it was made, but on Aug. 17, Taliban leaders promised amnesty for government workers and protection for women.
"I would like to assure the international community, including the United States, that nobody will be harmed," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. "We don't want any internal or external enemies."

Only taking up the sport earlier this year and struggling to find a gym until MMA Masters in Florida accepted her, McLaughlin launched her career with a win that came via a second-round submission on a Combate Global card.
Yet the doubters and naysayers have poured scorn on the win, with accusations ranging from McLaughlin cheating to suggesting that opponent Celine Provost took a dive prior to the rear-naked choke finish.
