Kiev has lost more than 80,000 troops since January - Russian MoD

Ukrainian forces have lost more than 80,000 troops since the beginning of the year, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Tuesday, adding that the Russian military is continuing to reduce "the enemy's combat potential."

More than 14,000 pieces of military hardware have also been destroyed by Russian forces since January, including 1,200 tanks and other armored combat vehicles. During the same period, Moscow has liberated some 403 square kilometers of Russia's new territories, Shoigu told a conference call with the country's military leadership.

Despite Kiev's lack of success on the battlefield, the Ukrainian leadership "is still trying to convince its Western sponsors of its ability to resist the Russian Army," he said. To do so, Kiev has resorted to terrorism and long-range strikes on Russian territories, targeting the civilian population, the minister added.

Utah formally empowers State Treasurer to protect state funds with gold and silver

Spencer Cox
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has signed legislation explicitly empowering the state treasurer to protect state funds with an allocation to physical gold and silver.

Sponsored by Rep. Ken Ivory, House Bill 348 permits - but does not require - the Treasurer to hold up to 10 percent of certain state reserve accounts in physical gold and silver to help secure state assets against the risks of inflation and financial turmoil and/or to achieve capital gains as measured in Federal Reserve Notes.

The Treasurer has limited options for holding, managing, and investing Utah's state monies, making this legislation necessary in order for gold and silver to be included.

Utah's reserves are invested almost exclusively in corporate bonds and banking agencies. These debt instruments appear to have low volatility, but they carry other risks - including pernicious inflation and the steady erosion in real value of principal, coupled with interest rates that are often negative in real terms.

A member of the CHP party died after a balcony collapsed during victory celebration.

A celebration of a local election win in the Turkish city of Denizli turned deadly for Türkiye's Republican People's Party (CHP), with one person killed and seven others injured.

The accident occurred overnight as party members and supporters gathered to celebrate the victory of Kadir Tatik in his campaign for the local municipality head's office, after preliminary results of the election were announced.

Footage from the scene shows multiple party members gathered on a balcony of a building, with a crowd of onlookers cheering them on outside. The balcony is seen abruptly collapsing, coming clean off the rest of the structure.

The accident left eight party members who were standing on the balcony injured. Three people received serious injuries, with one of them, the deputy head of the local CHP chapter, Mehmet Palaz, dying in hospital shortly afterwards.

Russian customs officers discovered a truck attempting to cross from Latvia into Russia was carrying 27 homemade bombs hidden inside Orthodox Christian icons and other ecclesiastical paraphernalia, the Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Tuesday.

According to the report, the bombs between them contained 70 kilograms of high-power explosives, which the FSB said had travelled from Ukraine through Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia before being discovered just before they reached their final destination in Russia.

The arrests were made on Sunday morning during a counter-terrorist operation in the regional capital, Makhachkala, and the nearby city of Kaspiysk, the NAC said.

The "bandits" who were taken to custody were "planning to commit a number of terrorist crimes," the statement noted.

Automatic weapons, ammunition and a ready-to-use improvised explosive device were discovered at the locations where the suspects were holed up, the statement read.

There were no casualties among security forces or civilians during the raids, according to the agency.

Ukrainian counteroffensive 'biggest debacle in modern military history' - David Sacks

The failure of Ukraine's 2023 summer counteroffensive against Russia was "easily predictable," according to US tech entrepreneur and venture capitalist David Sacks, who has suggested that the Washington elite should be held accountable for talking up the doomed operation.

Sacks' comments came in response to a post on Saturday by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who condemned the unnecessary loss of life suffered by Kiev's forces as they attempted to "attack a larger army" that had superior defenses.

The failed Ukrainian counteroffensive was "one of the biggest debacles in the history of modern warfare," Sacks said in agreement, adding that Kiev's soldiers and tanks had effectively run "headlong into minefields while Russian artillery rained down on them from heavily fortified positions."

Comment: That the Ukrainian counter-offensive was a total failure is a statement that all unbiased observers have agreed upon, yet no criticism from the mainstream media towards the military top brass in the US exists. That alone is a huge sign of how much the media in the West has become the mouthpiece for government propaganda.

'Huge problem': Pentagon's rapid wartime response cargo ships trapped in Baltimore after bridge collapse

bridge collapse
Two high-speed military cargo ships are stuck in the Port of Baltimore following Tuesday morning's collapse of the 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge. The major US East Coast port has been paralyzed for several days as the bridge collapse prevents inbound and outbound vessel traffic along the harbor's channel.

Using the automatic identification system, or AIS, data that tracks commercial vessels, three bulk carriers, two general cargo ships, one vehicle carrier, one tanker, and four Ready Reserve Force vessels (RRF), along with the container ship Dali that struck the bridge, are trapped in the harbor, according to the shipping blog gCaptain.

The three bulk carriers include:

Comment: A few days ago, AP listed some of the other disruptions the incident will have - the following is a snippet:
Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Timewise, it's going to hurt us a lot,'' said Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Baltimore's port has become increasingly important to U.S. retailers and manufacturers seeking to diversify their supply networks and bring goods closer to customers, said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation.

The use of trucks as an alternative to shipping goods will also cause traffic backups on U.S. thoroughfares, Petersen predicted. "The East Coast I-95 corridor is going to be a real disaster," he said.

Still, Levine thinks the bridge collapse is unlikely to have a big impact on global trade, certainly nothing like the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. First, Baltimore is not a major port for container vessels. And second, shipping traffic from Asia is in the annual lull following China's Lunar New Year holiday.

In the Baltimore area, "if you're in the construction business and you haven't piled up enough steel because of (high) interest rates, then there's a good chance you're going to run out of steel,'' Windward's Daniel said. "If you're in the shipbuilding or construction business, it can slow down your project.''

About 20% of U.S. coal exports pass through Baltimore en route to India, the Netherlands, Japan and other countries; that is second only to Norfolk, Virginia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Israel hostage families join biggest anti-government protests since war began

israel

Israel saw the biggest protests against its government since the outbreak of the Gaza war as hostage families joined forces with pro-democracy demonstrators across the country.

The families of the more than 130 hostages that are still held in Gaza have, until now, separated themselves from the anti-government protests that peaked last year against the Benjamin Netanyahu-led Right-wing coalition.

But six months into the war and with no sign of a hostage deal, the two groups came together on Saturday night as tens of thousands took to the streets to call for an election.

Comment: It's worth remembering, as Norman Finkelstein, and others, have repeatedly highlighted: the vast majority of Israelis support the genocide in Gaza however a great many do not support Netanyahu, and, contrary to the IDF's Hannibal Directive, they want the hostages back:
