Sickening: Canada's Supreme Court rules bestiality legal as long as there's no penetration

Sex acts with animals are legal in Canada, so long as there is no penetration involved, according to a surprise ruling issued by the Supreme Court.

The determination stemmed from a case involving a British Columbia man convicted of 13 counts sexually assaulting his stepdaughters - including one count of bestiality. But the man, identified only as "DLW", was acquitted of the bestiality count with the new ruling.

DLW's attorneys argued that bestiality linked to "buggery" - or sodomy - with animals beginning with an 1892 criminal code. Bestiality was first used in a 1955 code, but still was not defined to encompass every sex act with animals.

"Although bestiality was often subsumed in terms such as sodomy or buggery, penetration was the essence - 'the defining act' - of the offence," the court said.

A North Carolina man faces ethnic intimidation charges after leaving bacon at a mosque and making death threats to its members as they prepared for worship in observance of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, authorities said on Friday.

Russell Thomas Langford of Fayetteville was arrested late on Thursday, the Hoke County Sheriff's Office said. He is a major in the U.S. Army Reserve, WTVD-TV in Raleigh said, quoting officials at Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina.

On Thursday afternoon, members of the Masjid Al Madina in Raeford found two packages of bacon at the mosque entrance, the sheriff's office said. Observant Muslims are prohibited from consuming pork products. Ramadan is Islam's holy month, during which believers abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours.

Langford is charged with ethnic intimidation, assault with a deadly weapon, going armed to the terror of the public, communicating threats, stalking and disorderly conduct, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Officials with the sheriff's office and Fort Bragg military base could not be reached for comment on Friday. "We have called for stepped-up police presence not only for that mosque but others in that state," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim advocacy group.

A Brazilian competitive shooter was fighting for her life Friday after being shot in the head during an attempted robbery in Rio de Janeiro, underlining a crime wave sweeping the city two months before the Olympics.

Anna Paula Cotta, 27, a member of Brazil's Navy who had tried out for the Olympic team but didn't get a spot, was shot Thursday as she drove her car in northern Rio. The city is experiencing a surge in violent crime and robberies ahead of the Olympics, which open on August 5.

In another incident, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Orani Tempesta, reported on his website that he had been forced to take shelter behind his car Friday when a gun battle broke out during a police operation in a favela near a major central highway. A photograph showed him taking cover, along with other motorists, at the side of the road. On two occasions in 2014 and 2015 Tempesta survived armed hold-ups in which religious items like a crucifix were stolen.

Cotta's shooting occurred when she left home at dawn to help her sick father at the family business, according to Brazilian newspaper reports. Thieves attempted to steal the car and when she tried to escape they opened fire multiple times. She was hospitalized in serious condition. "An examination of the site was carried out. Officers are looking for (camera) images and carefully searching the area to gather necessary evidence for the investigation," the civil police force said in a statement.

The attack on Cotta, a pistol specialist who was reported to have been about to participate in a Brazilian championship event this Saturday, followed the armed mugging of members of the Spanish sailing team in Rio last month. None of them were hurt, but they were forced to give up their valuables.

A style of swimwear has caused an uproar at a public pool in Germany, but the culprit isn't a revealing bikini. Instead, it's the 'burqini' that's been banned - the modest swimsuit worn by some Muslim women.

When the indoor pool in Neutraubling, Germany, held a women-only day, one of the swimmers opted to wear a burqini while swimming and participating in water aerobics. However, her attire led to complaints from other women at the pool, Mittelbayerische newspaper reported. The move was also criticized by the town's mayor, Heinz Kiechle.

"Why the burqini as a full-body suit would be necessary to wear during a women's swim day is for me incomprehensible," he said, as quoted by The Local. Kiechle also told Mittelbayerische that it "contradicts the basic idea of integration and mutual recognition which is always being discussed in many towns."

According to the mayor, the ban on burqinis has to do with a rule which states that "only generally typical apparel" can be worn in the swimming pool. He stressed that an exception will not be given to Muslim women.

Some jurors are refusing to serve in the courtroom of Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky, citing his decision to sentence Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner to only six months in jail in a sexual assault case.

"I can't believe what you did," one prospective told the judge this week in declining to serve on a jury in one case, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

It's unclear how many people have refused to serve, but some media reports in the Bay Area said it was more than 10 over the course of the week.

KPIX-TV said court officials were surprised at the defiance but that Persky was able eventually to seat a jury in the case.

A police officer shot a man outside the baggage claim area of the Dallas Love Field airport in Dallas, Texas.

The shooting was first reported at the airport on Twitter around 12:15 p.m. on Friday afternoon on Twitter.

A smartphone video that captured the shooting shows a police officer at the airport pointing his gun after gunshots can be heard firing.

"Get down!" the man shouted repeatedly with his weapon pointed.


The shooting started as a domestic disturbance incident, as the Dallas PD officer reacted to a man throwing rocks at a woman's car outside the baggage claim area. The suspect, a black male, was confronted by the police officer, who "discharged his weapon a number of times," Assistant Chief Randall Blankenbaker told reporters on Friday afternoon.

Bullied teen commits suicide after ex-boyfriend humiliates her by posting nude video on Snapchat

A 15-year old Florida girl has committed suicide after a friend posted nude footage of her, taken without her permission, on social media. The girl's family is seeking justice, but the police reportedly see no links to bullying. Tovanna Holton, a freshman at Wiregrass Ranch High School, killed herself with her mother's gun on Sunday.

"I couldn't get in the bathroom," her mother, Levon Holton-Teamer, told Tampa NBC-affiliate WFLA. "The bathroom light was off so I tried to get in and I looked down and I saw the puddle of blood. I tried to apply the pressure, the pressure to her head. I tried to save her."

The girl's mother recalled the last conversation with her daughter, who, she said, could not bear the humiliation.

"Tovonna would say, 'Mommy, I owe them; I owe them'. I said, 'What do you mean you owe them?' I couldn't understand what was wrong," Holton-Teamer told reporters. In search for answers, Tovanna's aunt went on Facebook and found out that the niece's close friend posted a nude picture of her taken in a shower.

Comment: How is it that "nothing points in the direction of bullying" when a young girl is publicly humiliated to the extent that she commits suicide?! Violence against women and girls has become an allowed behavior of pathological individuals from pathological institutions. These types feel no shame, as demonstrated by the ex-boyfriend's comments above, but it is a shame on all of society to see such regular cruelty.

A paedophile who filmed himself raping a toddler was jailed for 12 years.

Police raided 56-year-old Stuart Tomlinson's home in Liverpool to look for indecent images of children on his computer on July 22 last year.

But as officers examined the sick stash discovered on his equipment, they recognised Tomlinson in a video, which showed him raping the child.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, said Tomlinson spent hours "trawling the internet in order to satisfy your depraved sexual appetite" then took his offending even further.

He said: "Your victims speak of understandable stress, shock and outrage of what has been discovered.

"Any right-thinking member of society will be horrified and disgusted to hear what you have done."

Martine Snowdon, prosecuting, said Tomlinson made no comment, both when arrested over the images and when re-arrested over the 11-minute clip.

The lawyer told Liverpool Crown Court the video showed Tomlinson, now of Wakefield Drive, Moreton , "treating it as a game" with the toddler.

Tomlinson had also secretly filmed adult women and girls going to the toilet and had five extreme animal pornography videos.

Comment: This predator deserves no less than a life sentence without possibility of parole.

A student pilot and his flight instructor have been missing for nearly two weeks after their plane took off from a California island in overcast conditions.

Woodland Hills, California insurance broker Edmond Haronian, 50, and flight instructor Jason Glazier, 50, went missing on May 28 after their plane took off on a return flight from Catalina Island. Authorities confirmed to CBS Los Angeles that the men did not file a flight plan.

The aircraft departed Catalina Island Airport on Saturday afternoon, but failed to make it back to Van Nuys Airport, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told the Los Angeles Times.

Haronian's family is offering $150,000 for information that leads to his body and $250,000 if Haronian is found alive.

"We would like to have closure," Haronian's brother, Edwin Haronian, told ABC 7. "And we would like to accept it if we find some clue that it actually crashed."

The family said they had nearly given up hope until they found photos Haronian posted on Facebook showing that he had reached Catalina.

Children might be a little safer now that a Broward County Sheriff's Sergeant has been arrested on 29 counts ranging from child porn to sexual assault to child molestation — a number of which occurred while the officer was on the job.

"Today, detectives with our public corruption unit arrested Sgt. Kreg Costa on a multitude of child pornography charges," announced BSO Sheriff Scott Israel on Thursday, according to 7News.

Sgt. Kreg Costa faces a litany of disturbing charges including, as 7News cited the arrest form, "seven counts of using a child in a sexual performance, 12 counts of possession of child pornography, four counts of lewd and lascivious conduct, one count of sexual assault, four counts of soliciting or enticing a child using a computer, and one count of transmitting information harmful to a child."
