Australia extends Covid lockdown for Melbourne another week

Covid lockdown measures covering five million residents in Melbourne have been extended for a further seven days, as officials work to "run this thing to ground" and contain a cluster of cases in Australia's second-largest city.

The initial seven-day lockdown imposed on the area had been due to expire at midnight on Thursday but Victoria's acting premier, James Merlino, announced the restrictions would be extended for another week due to concerns over the spread of the Kappa variant.

The initial cluster of cases is thought to have been caused by an individual who arrived in Australia infected with the Kappa variant, a strain first identified in India. The infected individual is believed to have potentially had thousands of close contacts, who have been identified and informed, with 350 cases confirmed so far.

Speaking on Wednesday, Merlino warned that the new variant appears to be "quicker and more contagious than we have ever seen before," with experts linking the variant to multiple clusters in a number of countries worldwide.

Stepan Latypov, a Belarusian opposition figure, was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after dramatically injuring himself during a trial to determine whether he helped organize long-running unauthorised protests in the country.

Shocking footage quickly emerged online, with reports indicating that Latypov gave a short speech from the defendant's bench in which he accused security officials of threatening to prosecute his family if he did not confess. He was then said to have stabbed himself with a pen.

In one clip, an officer can be seen attempting to revive Latypov, while another attempts to maintain order in the courtroom. Another video subsequently showed the defendant being carried to a waiting ambulance, and reports indicate he may be put into a medically-induced coma while doctors deal with his injuries.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill that bans biological males from competing in biological female sports.

"We believe in the state of Florida of protecting the fairness and the integrity of women's athletics," said DeSantis.

DeSantis said that women's sports "provides our young girls with opportunities that really teach them lessons that last a lifetime," adding that competing in sports has provided many girls the opportunity to pursue higher education.

UN: Pandemic plunges 100M more workers into poverty

The pandemic has pushed over 100 million more workers into poverty, the UN said Wednesday, after working hours plummeted and access to good quality jobs evaporated.

In a report, the UN's International Labour Organization (ILO) cautioned that the labour market crisis created by the pandemic was far from over, with employment not expected to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 at the earliest.

The ILO's annual World Employment and Social Outlook report indicated that the planet would be 75 million jobs short at the end of this year compared to if the pandemic had not occurred. And it would still count 23 million fewer jobs by the end of next year. ILO chief Guy Ryder told reporters Covid-19:

"has not just been a public health crisis, it's also been an employment and human crisis. Without a deliberate effort to accelerate the creation of decent jobs, and support the most vulnerable members of society and the recovery of the hardest-hit economic sectors, the lingering effects of the pandemic could be with us for years in the form of lost human and economic potential, and higher poverty and inequality."

Comment: The forecast, given upcoming unknowns (and there are many), potentiates devastating circumstances permeating all vulnerable strata. Thus, without knowledge to navigate, we blindly go.

In algorithms we trust? Twitter draws criticism over potential new 'misinformation warning' system

Twitter is experimenting with a new system that would flag messages it deems problematic, even if not factually incorrect, sparking concern that the platform is taking content-screening too far.

Tech blogger Jane Manchun Wong, who is known for reverse engineering apps to find hidden features, revealed on Monday that she had come across a tiered warning label system that Twitter is toying with, apparently in an effort to expand its crackdown on 'misinformation'.

According to Wong, Twitter could potentially place problematic material into three categories: "Get the latest," "Stay informed," and "Misleading." The new system appears to take a more nuanced approach to fact-checking, employing labels on content that may not be wrong but, in Twitter's opinion, requires more context.

Comment: Once upon a time, social media were platforms where like-minded people could freely discuss various topics. Billions of people started to use them. Then, people get addicted to it. The biggest social media platforms started to slowly tighten the noose and impose more and more censorship with the narrative to prevent false news and prevent misleading of the users.

Today, social media are one powerful tool in the hands of the PTB. Through social media, they can control the flow of information and choose what is "true" or "false". It depends on whether the information fits their agenda or not. The main goal is to have more and more control over the population.

Controlling the information and censorship disguised as care for the users is a powerful way of getting there. A totalitarian society where everything and everybody is controlled and tracked.

To mark gay pride, the world's biggest companies are 'bravely' flying the rainbow flag. Just not in places like Saudi Arabia...

It's June and the biggest corporations on the planet want you to know that they are celebrating gay Pride — unless you live somewhere like Saudi Arabia in which case they couldn't care less. On their main Twitter page, Procter & Gamble have put a Pride flag in their banner and in their pinned Tweet they proudly proclaim: 'We strive to be a champion of #LGBTQVisibility year-round, using our voice to drive acceptance, inclusion and a love for humanity.'

I guess there are no gay people in Saudi Arabia to champion, which must be why P&G's Saudi Twitter handle has not a single rainbow flag in sight and a pinned tweet simply wishing people a blessed Ramadan.

Comment: It's all about tuning the virtue signal for each duped audience. Even the vilest of war mongering corporations recognizes it.

Myocarditis side effect is extremely rare and in most cases mild; experts say finding unlikely to affect decision on vaccinating 12- to 15-year-olds

Israel's Health Ministry reported Tuesday that there is a probable link between the second dose shot of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine and dozens of cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, in males under 30.

According to the ministry, they found that from December 2020 until May 2021, there were 275 cases of myocarditis reported across the country, 148 of them in close proximity to when the patient received a vaccine dose.

Twenty-seven cases, including 11 people with preexisting conditions, were reported shortly after the first dose, out of 5,401,150 who received a shot. However, that increased to 121 cases, including 60 people with preexisting conditions, out of 5,049,424 within 30 days of the second shot.

Comment: Israelis might not want to be popping the champagne just yet over getting most of their lives back. The picture down the road may be quite different. But the timelapse between the shot and the potential damage will be long enough for plausible denial. Will they understand they've been utilized as Big Pharma's guinea pigs, with no recourse?

1 million ballots counted in Maricopa County election audit, halfway point reached

With over a million ballots counted thus far, the Arizona Senate is inching closer to the halfway point in its Maricopa County 2020 election audit.

The total ballot count needed to complete the audit is 2.1 million.

Dr. Kelli Ward, chairwoman of the Arizona Republican Party, discussed the progress of the audit in a video posted to Twitter on Memorial Day.

"As for 'America's Audit,' counting continues today and the latest total has hit 1 million ballots evaluated and hand-counted," she said.. "That's in large part due to more volunteer centers in place, and what gets us to nearly 50 percent of the 2.1 million 2020 ballots cast in Maricopa County."

Comment: Maricopa's election process smells from beginning to end. Good on ordinary Arizona citizens for keeping up the pressure. This circus is far from over.

Trans activists, like Biden's pick as assistant health secretary, Rachel Levine, say schoolkids can choose to have puberty blockers and sex-change surgery. But confused children are too young to make such life-changing decisions.

We all know the mantra by now - 'trans women are women, and trans men are men'. Deep down we may know it to be nonsense, but unless we pay it lip service we risk being labelled as bigots or worse - despicable people who "question the very humanity" of trans people, to use the language of the New York Times.

Victims of this ideology include women, whose boundaries and spaces are being violated by male people who claim to feel like women, and trans women like me who had been getting on with our lives. Nobody consulted with me before social justice warriors made us their cause célèbre. Depicted falsely as one of the most vulnerable groups on the planet, many of us are relatively privileged, only transitioning after our male bodies helped us secure our places in society.

Comment: Kudos to Ms. Hayton for speaking out. She is vilified as a 'traitor' by militant trans groups such as Stonewall and Mermaids for not supporting their desire to co-opt children to their cause.

A Minneapolis man whose six-year-old granddaughter was killed by a stray bullet inside her mom's car is reportedly rejecting calls to defund the police.

"K.G. Wilson's granddaughter, Aniya Allen, was shot in the head as she and her mother were believed to have been caught in the crossfire between rival gangs," Fox News reported Friday.

The 53-year-old anti-violence activist who has worked to get children off the streets and help families affected by violence for about two decades, said Thursday defunding the police "is the craziest thing I've ever heard."

"I can tell you this, if I was a criminal, I would support it," he noted, adding, "I would love it."
