Fury of Kelly widow over inquest

David Kelly's family have dramatically intensified the row over his death by accusing Lord Hutton of letting the Government off the hook.

Dr Kelly's widow Janice and their three daughters said the former judge had not fully examined how much the actions and failings of the Defence Ministry affected the scientist's state of mind.

Their attack came as a coroner ruled that there was no need to reconvene an inquest into Dr Kelly's death, which Lord Hutton concluded was suicide.

Jeremy Gompertz, QC, representing the family, told Oxford coroner Nicholas Gardiner yesterday that the family accepted Lord Hutton's findings "as to the mode and approximate cause of Dr Kelly's death".

But he said they were disappointed he did not "consider more fully the extent to which the state of mind in which Dr Kelly took his own life was induced by the failings of the Ministry of Defence in the exercise of the duty of care owed as his employer". Mrs Kelly, 58, may now sue the MoD for compensation.

Crucial questions left unanswered

The decision not to resume the inquest also came under fire last night, with experts warning that crucial questions about the death of the weapons inspector will be left unanswered. Dr Michael Powers, himself a coroner, said: 'I am concerned that the due process has not been followed.

"There evidently are contradictory views that were never put to the experts who gave evidence before Lord Hutton.

"In consequence the rigours that are normally undertaken at a coroner's inquest simply were not fulfilled."

The Kelly family's statement was their first detailed public response to the much-criticised Hutton report.

Attorney general rules against Dr David Kelly inquest

BBC REPORT

The attorney general has rejected calls for an inquest into the death in 2003 of government scientist Dr David Kelly.

Dominic Grieve said the evidence Dr Kelly killed himself was "overwhelming" and rejected claims of a "cover-up".

Dr Kelly was found dead after he was exposed as the source of a BBC story which led to a row with the then Labour government over Iraq intelligence.

A man aged 76 and two members of his family were arrested after a 'vicious' punch-up on a plane that took cabin crew 30 minutes to break up.

Derek Edmond, his daughter Zoe King and her husband Martin were on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Gatwick to Barbados when a Danish family sitting nearby accused them of being too noisy.

Police said Mrs King, 46, was celebrating her birthday and she and her family had been drinking for much of the eight-hour flight.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a division of the federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), has spent $3,634,807 over the past decade funding research that involves getting monkeys to smoke and drink drugs such as PCP, methamphetamine (METH), heroin, and cocaine and then studying their behavior, including during different phases of the female monkeys' menstrual cycles.

The study also uses "interventions" as "treatment models" for monkeys who have been taught to use drugs.

NIDA wins CNSNews.com's "What Were They Smoking Award" - symbolized by The Golden Hookah (see video) - for sponsoring an outrageous government spending program that sends taxpayer dollars up in smoke.

Robert Adams at first thought someone was playing a trick when he saw the plastic bag filled with money lying next to a news box in a suburban strip mall.

Adams told WGN-AM's Greg Jarrett this morning that the bag sitting outside the Chase Bank branch in Rolling Meadow where he was headed late Monday afternoon to get some cash to buy a lunchtime burrito was filled with lots of bills--a little more than $17,000, as police later determined.

At the ATM, "I glanced down and I saw a clear plastic bag, with what looked like money in it, but I thought, you know, maybe someone's horsing around and put napkins in it or something or other," Adams said. "So I picked it up, but it was money."

The bag contained an ATM-style Chase receipt, so Adams brought it into the bank branch at 2641 Kirschoff Road, thinking an employee had dropped it.

"My thought was - it's from that Chase ATM," said Adams, 54.

He said he never thought of keeping the money for himself.

Canada: British Columbia Man Dies While 'Car-Surfing'

A 25-year-old Kelowna, B.C., resident is dead in what police are calling a "car-surfing" accident.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Terry McLachlan said the accident happened just after 1 a.m. PT Saturday on a forest service road in West Kelowna.

McLachlan said the man had been "car-surfing" on top of a vehicle being driven by a 27-year-old male friend.

The driver lost control of the car, McLachlan said, and the vehicle tumbled down a 17-metre embankment.

The 25-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lion was spotted in the New York City suburb of Greenwich a week ago

The 10 stone mountain lion was hit by a small SUV on a highway in Milford, Connecticut, early Saturday morning, and died from its injuries. The driver was unhurt, officials said.

With no native mountain lion population in the state, officials said it was "possible and even likely" it was the same enormous cat with a long tail spotted last weekend in the New York City suburb some 30 miles away, said Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis Schain.

The large cat was transferred to a state environmental facility where authorities will use the photos, paw prints and other evidence collected near the three Greenwich sightings to determine if it is the same animal.

Travelling between the two US cities would be a jog for this large cat known to roam extensively, even up to a couple hundred miles in a day, said Schain.

The eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct earlier this year, prompting authorities to suspect the animal spotted in the urban jungle of the New York City metropolitan area, had either escaped or was released from captivity.

Egypt detains suspected Israeli spy: report

Egypt has arrested an Israeli man on suspicion of spying and of trying to recruit Egyptian youths to act against the authorities after President Hosni Mubarak's overthrow, sources and the state news agency said Sunday.

Judge Hesham Badawi of the supreme state security prosecution ordered the man to be detained for 15 days on suspicion of "spying on Egypt with the aim of harming its economic and political interests," MENA news agency reported.

A judiciary source said the man was arrested Sunday.

Egypt, which in 1979 became the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel, has experienced months of political upheaval since protesters overthrew Mubarak, who regularly met Israeli officials and maintained close ties.

The detention may add to tensions raised by a row over the halting of Egypt's gas exports to Israel after a pipeline blast and Cairo's easing of restrictions at a Gaza border crossing that Mubarak had kept very tightly controlled.

Two weeks after it started the Greek movement of 'outraged' people has the main squares in all cities overflowing with crowds that shout their anger, and makes the Papandreou government and its local and international supporters tremble. But according to people in charge of the Athens underground, who know how to assess the numbers of passengers, there were at least 250,000 people converging on Syntagma on that memorable night! Actually several hundreds of thousands of people if we add the 'historic' gatherings that took place on the main squares of other Greek cities (see map).
