Fines be damned: Beverly Hills fails to conserve water use amid California drought

Beverly Hills is in hot water, facing a hefty fine and public shaming for not conserving as much water as drought-stricken California standards require. Although the affluent city isn't alone in using too much water, it is the only violator not located in a desert.

"You should be ashamed of yourselves," Chris Carrigan, director of the California State Water Resources Board, said of Beverly Hills locals wasting water in a press conference call. Carrigan also said he was "sure" there were other residents being "very conscientious and doing their part."

It's unclear how Beverly Hills will pay the $61,000 fine. Residents may see an increase in their water bills even if the utility or municipality have reserve funds for such occasions. The same can be said of the three other communities facing the same fine: Indio, Redlands and the Coachella Valley Water District.

Intense clashes have engulfed West Bank and Gaza Strip resulting in almost a hundred of injuries and several deaths. Israeli forces used live rounds and tear gas to push back violent Palestinian youths who pelted the officers with stones and Molotov cocktails.

Vicious violence in the Gaza strip left at least 46 Palestinians injured after Israeli forces confronted the Molotov-cocktail propelling youth, a spokesperson for the Gaza Ministry of Health, Ashraf al-Qidra, told Ma'an news agency.

Comment: Israel and Palestine are finding themselves in a really explosive situation that is escalating. This will demand world attention.

Two-seat long-range supersonic interceptor MiG-31
Both pilots of the MiG-31 fighter jet that earlier crashed in the Kamchatka Territory have been evacuated to the Yelizovo airdrome by the search and rescue service of the Eastern Military District. Rescuers arrived at the site where the pilots had been spotted as soon as the weather improved, the Defense Ministry's press and information service told TASS.

"Doctors briefly examined the rescued pilots to conclude there was no risk to their lives," the statement said.

After the MiG-31 crew ejected themselves their location was identified by an Ilyushin-38 reconnaissance plane, which picked up the signal from the distress beacon.

The fighter jet disappeared from the radar screens in the Eastern Military district at 18:38 Moscow time, when it was on the way back to the air base in the Kamchatka Territory after a routine training flight.

The MiG-31 is a two-seat long-range supersonic interceptor, capable of attacking any air targets round the clock in any weather.

Search and rescue officer says all 224 passengers and crew on flight from Sharm el-Sheikh likely to have died in Sinai crash

A Russian plane carrying more than 200 passengers from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh has crashed in central Sinai with all on board feared dead.

The jet, operated by the Russian company Kogalymavia and branded as Metrojet, was "completely destroyed with all on board likely to have died", a security officer from the search and rescue team said.

Destined for St Petersburg, the flight was carrying 224 people, including 17 children and seven crew members.

The crash site was found on Saturday morning in southern Arish, a mountainous area of central Sinai, but poor weather conditions were making it difficult for rescue crews to reach the scene, the security officer said.

Northern Sinai is home to groups of Islamist militants, many affiliated to Islamic State, but there were no indications the plane was shot down, Egyptian security sources told Reuters.

A statement from the Egyptian prime minister's office said Sherif Ismail had formed a cabinet-level crisis committee to deal with the crash, which was believed to have been caused by a mechanical failure.

The plane, which had a tail number of EI-ETJ, lost contact 23 minutes after takeoff while flying at more than 30,000 ft above sea level, according to the plane tracker website Flight Radar. It had begun to make a steep descent at a rate of 6,000 feet per minute shortly before communications were lost.

Czech charity helps homeless by turning them into WiFi hotspots

A Czech charity has proposed an unusual way to help the homeless and integrate them back into society: They have been offered work as human WiFi distributors on the streets of the capital city of Prague.

The charity "WiFi4Life" is giving the homeless pocket WiFi hotspots and a power bank, so that passers-by can access free internet or charge the batteries of their gadgets. For their work, the homeless get meals, clothing, allowances and decent accommodation.

Comment: It's good that these people are taking the initiative to reintegrate the homeless population into society, but maybe turning them into walking WiFi towers isn't the best idea considering the danger EMF pollution poses to long term health.

What really happened at Gravity Payments with its $70,000 minimum wage

Image
© John KeatleyDan Price, co-founder of Gravity Payments
Before Dan Price caused a media firestorm by establishing a $70,000 minimum wage at his Seattle company, Gravity Payments, before Hollywood agents, reality-show producers, and book publishers began throwing elbows for a piece of the hip, 31-year-old entrepreneur with the shoulder-length hair and Brad Pitt looks, before Rush Limbaugh called him a socialist and Harvard Business School professors asked to study his radical experiment in paying workers, an entry-level Gravity employee named Jason Haley got really pissed off at him.

It was late 2011. Haley was a 32-year-old phone tech earning about $35,000 a year, and he was in a sour mood. Price had noticed it, and when he spotted Haley outside on a smoking break, he approached. "Seems like something's bothering you," he said. "What's on your mind?"

Comment: It would fantastic to see other companies follow Dan Price's lead about how to pay employees - instead of treating employees as disposable, low cost, easily replaced tools.

Palestinian baby suffocates to death from tear gas near Bethlehem

baby suffocates
© IMENCAn eight-month-old Palestinian baby died Friday, from tear gas inhalation, in Beit Fajjar village, to the south of Bethlehem during clashes in the area, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.
The ministry said in a statement that Ramadan Mohammad Faisal Thawabta died after inhaling tear gas when clashes erupted nearby between Palestinians and Israeli military forces.

Thawabta's body is being transported to Beit Jala Governmental Hospital.

Three Palestinians were injured with 0.22 caliber bullets during clashes in the village, the ministry added.

An Israeli army spokesperson did not have any immediate information but told Ma'an News Agency that they were looking into the incident.

The eight-month-old child's death brings the total number of Palestinians killed this month to 67, at least ten of whom have been children.

At least nine Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians during the same time period. Earlier Friday, Qassem Mahmoud Sabaneh was shot dead after an alleged attack on an Israeli border policeman in Nablus, and Ahmad Hamada Qneibi, 23, died from his injuries hours after attacking and injuring an Israeli in occupied East Jerusalem.
