US state-run RFE/RL backtracks on dubious claim West was honest with Russia re: NATO expansion on its borders after online outcry

America's foreign propaganda service has sparked ire online with its version of the history of relations between Russia and NATO. But, as all good historians know, the past can be subject to change, and it has since had a rewrite.

The article, by Mike Eckel, a senior correspondent for the state-run RFERL, drew criticism in Russia-watching circles after it was published on Wednesday. It set out to look at whether the US and its allies had given assurances to Moscow that the NATO military bloc would not expand eastwards, in an effort to avoid escalation and maintain stability in Europe.

Initially, the headline asked if Russia had been "deceived" by these promises, and thereby had a legitimate grievance when NATO signed up the former Soviet republics of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as members. "No," it boldly concluded, caveating, "(but it's complicated)."

Quite how complicated the question really was would soon come back to bite RFERL, which quickly faced accusations it was glossing over a thorny issue to arrive at politically convenient conclusions.

Comment: RFERL is a US/Western mouthpiece, dutifully fulfilling its purpose to shape perception by shaping the news.

Fauci: Americans 'misinterpreting' CDC guidance on masks: It's 'not' removal of a mask mandate

Dr. Anthony Fauci
"I think people are misinterpreting, thinking that this is a removal of a mask mandate for everyone. It's not," Fauci said during an Axios virtual event. Rather, Fauci described the CDC guidance as "an assurance to those who are vaccinated that they can feel safe, be they outdoors or indoors."
"It's not their fault. People either read them quickly, or listen and hear half of it. They are feeling that we're saying: 'You don't need the mask anymore.' That's not what the CDC said.

"They said: If you are vaccinated, you can feel safe — that you will not get infected either outdoors or indoors. It did not explicitly say that unvaccinated people should abandon their masks."

Comment: COVID CONFUSION-19 brought to you once again by Dr. Fauci. Businesses cannot, and should not, be privy to who has had the vaccine and who hasn't.

More bad news for the Biden family.

Film producers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney have announced that they are releasing a film exposing Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, for his "wildlife and dodgy business dealings."

The film, which is titled My Son Hunter, and will feature Hunter Biden's alleged drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and corrupt business dealings. McAleer confronted Hunter Biden at his Los Angeles residence about being a bagman for Joe Biden, who was referred to in emails from Hunter Biden as "The Big Guy."

Hunter Biden ran from the journalists and slammed the door on them when confronted about his international pay-to-play scheme and Burisma corruption. "Hunter came down to answer the door but he ran when he saw it was journalists asking questions," the reporter said.

German soldier who posed as Syrian refugee on trial for assassination plot

The defendant identified only as 1st Lt. Franco A. due to German privacy rules, walks to a court for the start of a trial on charges of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state in Frankfurt, Germany, Thursday, May 20, 2021.
A German army officer who posed as a Syrian asylum-seeker went on trial Thursday accused of plotting to kill prominent politicians and blame the attack on refugees.

Federal prosecutors say the defendant, identified only as 1st Lt. Franco A. due to German privacy rules, acted out of far-right extremist motives. The case has raised concerns about extremism in the country's military.

Before his trial in Frankfurt's regional court, the 32-year-old defendant denied that he had planned to carry out any attacks, the dpa news agency reported.

Comment: From an earlier Yahoo! News report:
In one of the most puzzling and disturbing cases to grip Germany in recent years, Lt Franco Albrecht, who was once entertained as a guest of the British army at Sandhurst, lived a double life for more than a year.

He disguised himself with make-up and a false beard and commuted hundreds of miles every week between his army barracks and the refugee accommodation where he was known as David Benjamin, a Christian from Syria. Prosecutors allege he was creating a false identity as part of a plan to assassinate a public figure and blame it on a Syrian refugee in order to foment civil unrest and bring down Angela Merkel's government.

Lt Albrecht denies the terror charges and says he was conducting his own private research to highlight the shortcomings of the German asylum system and the ease with which it could be fooled. As evidence, he has pointed to a number of documentary-style videos he made while staying at the refugee accommodation.

When his case first came to trial in 2018, the court ruled there was no evidence to support the terror charges and dismissed them.

But that decision was overturned on appeal last year, and the court in Frankfurt must now determine not only how Lt Albrecht was able to fool the German asylum authorities for 16 months, but also whether it was part of a far-Right plot to bring down the government.

There are no formal pleas in the German legal system but Lt Albrecht and his family have made clear in media interviews that he intends to fight the terror charges .

His double life finally caught up with him at Vienna airport in February 2017, when he was caught trying to retrieve a gun he had hidden in a lavatory there. He told Austrian police he had found it while attending a military ball in Vienna and planned to hand it in to the authorities, but forgot about it and panicked when he remembered he was carrying it at the airport.

But when Austrian police checked his fingerprints they found he had two identities — one as Lt Albrecht, and the other as David Benjamin, the Syrian asylum-seeker. The Austrians handed this information over to their German counterparts and an investigation was opened which prosecutors allege found Lt Albrecht had a history of far-Right sympathies and links to "prepper" movements inside the German military.

"Preppers" are survivalists who believe the breakdown of civilised society is imminent and prepare or "prep" for it by hoarding weapons.

He was arrested in April 2017 and a large quantity of ammunition was found stored illegally at his mother's house.

Prosecutors allege the gun he was caught trying to retrieve in Vienna, a historic French handgun made some time between 1928 to 1944, was the weapon with which he intended to carry out a series of assassinations.

Investigators also uncovered what prosecutors say is a "death list" of high-profile German figures among his possessions, including the names of Heiko Maas, the foreign minister, Claudia Roth, a Green Party politician, and Anetta Kahane, a Jewish activist. They found photographs Lt Albrecht had taken inside the underground car park of Ms Kahane's offices.

Lt Albrecht denies the names are a death list and says they were people he wanted to contact. If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

The Army will seek to discipline troops who refuse a Covid jab, according to official papers obtained by the Daily Mail.

Orders to the Royal Artillery and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers state: 'Covid-19 vaccination. Anyone who is refusing to have the CV-19 jab is to be educated by the CoC (Chain of Command) and any rumours quashed.

'If they still refuse they may be deemed as unfit to soldier and dealt with accordingly as the CV-19 jab may be a requirement to deploy on operations/exercises, much like yellow fever.'

"Wise and sensible" to abort babies with Down Syndrome - Richard Dawkins

I have rarely seen a more vivid illustration of the lethal consequences of utilitarian thinking. In 2014, Richard Dawkins was asked on Twitter what a woman carrying a Down baby should do. His response was blunt and curt:
Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice.
On what possible basis could it be "immoral" to bring one of these sweet and loving people into the world?

Science, Scientists and Religion, and COVID

Comment: You can judge a lot about a society by how it treats its weakest and most vulnerable. The above also reveals a lot about those with an ideological, Darwinist mindset like Dawkins. Those that think similarly also came to the fore during the recent coronavirus hysteria: 'Avoidable deaths': Do Not Resuscitate orders issued AGAIN - People with learning disabilities targeted during second lockdown

Notably, there's evidence that in past primitive societies, who didn't have the kind of technologies and luxuries that we enjoy today, they took care of those that were less capable than themselves: Trepanation found on 3,600 year old skulls of disabled brothers in northern Israel

500+ Israeli Jews call for external intervention to stop Israeli aggression, work towards decolonization

gaza crater house bombed israel
Editor's Note: The following is an English translation of an open letter to the international community from Israeli Jews. Mondoweiss occasionally publishes press releases and statements from organizations in an effort to draw attention to overlooked issues.
We, Jewish Israelis, oppose the actions of the Israeli government and hereby declare our commitment to act against them. We refuse to accept the Jewish-supremacist regime and call upon the international community to immediately intervene in defense of the Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, the Galilee, the Negev, al-Lydd, Yaffa, Ramleh, Haifa, and throughout historic Palestine.

Jewish supremacy is the cornerstone of the Israeli regime, and its consistent objective is to transfer and obliterate the Palestinian people, their history, and their national identity. This objective manifests in continued acts of ethnic cleansing by means of evictions and home demolitions, brutal military occupation, denial of civil and human rights, and legislation of a series of racist laws culminating in the Nation-State Law, defining the state as "the Nation-State of the Jewish People," and them only.

Black fungus infections, as a complication of covid, declared an epidemic in Rajasthan, India

covid triggr funcal infections mucormycosis

Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) has reported mucormycosis, a rare and serious fungal infection, triggered by coronavirus (COVID-19), in some patients.
Mucormycosis (black fungus), which is primarily affecting people recovering from Covid, has been declared an epidemic in Rajasthan, officials said on Wednesday.

Currently, the state has around 100 black fungus patients and a separate ward has been made at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur for their treatment.

Mucormycosis has been notified as an epidemic and a notifiable disease in the state under the Rajasthan Epidemic Act 2020, according to a notification issued by state's Principal Health Secretary Akhil Arora.

He said the step was taken to ensure integrated and coordinated treatment of black fungus and the coronavirus.

According to experts, people with diabetes are more prone to getting the black fungus infection.

Comment: Yahoo! News earlier reported:
"We are seeing a rise again in this dangerous fungal infection triggered by Covid-19. In the last two days, we have admitted six cases of mucormycosis. Last year, this deadly infection caused a high mortality with many patients suffering from loss of eye sight, removal of nose and jaw bone," Dr Manish Munjal, a senior ENT surgeon at SGRH, was quoted by News18 as saying.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection with a mortality rate of whopping 50 percent. Previously called zygomycosis, the black fungal infection is caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. These molds live throughout the environment. The infection usually starts from the nose and spreads to eyes. If not treated on time, it can cause death.

'COVID-19 Patients Vulnerable to Mucormycosis'

COVID-19 patients with weak immunity are more prone to mucormycosis, said Dr Ajay Swaroop, who heads the Department of ENT at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. "Use of steroids in treatment of coronavirus infection and the fact that many COVID-19 patients have diabetes as co-morbidity could be one of the reasons for this rise in black fungus cases again. COVID-19 infected patients with weak immunity are more prone to this deadly infection," he said.

Preventive Steps:

It is vital to maintain good hygiene. One should avoid touching eyes and nose often. If you notice swelling around your nose, eyes or throat, you must visit a doctor for a checkup. Early detection of mucormycosis plays key role in treatment of the disease.

Heavily armed soldiers arrive at the entrance of National Park Hoge Kempen in Maasmechelen, Northern Belgium, on May 20, 2021
Belgium has stepped up efforts to track down a soldier who went on the run after threatening several public figures, including a top virologist. The armed suspect had been flagged by the government as a potential extremist.

Jurgen Conings reportedly took four rocket launchers and an array of other weapons from his military barracks before disappearing on Monday. He was last seen leaving his home in Belgium's northeastern Limburg province.

The authorities have described the soldier as a "potentially highly violent extremist" who holds far-right views. He reportedly left behind messages signaling that he wouldn't peacefully surrender, explaining that he "could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us."

History - 1, woke - 0: Defeat for BLM as Cecil Rhodes statue won't be removed

Protesters demanding the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford, be removed.
Black Lives Matter in the mud.

The UK branch of Black Lives Matter has suffered a significant defeat after it was revealed that a statue of Cecil Rhodes will remain at Oxford's Oriel College.

Following the transatlantic riots and protests after the death of George Floyd last summer, campaigners had hoped that the "controversial" monument would be permanently removed.

Despite the College itself expressing a desire to remove the statue, in addition to a ruling by an independent commission which came to the same conclusion, Rhodes is safe for the time being because of the costs associated with expelling him from the Grade II listed High Street building.

Comment: Reprehensible as Rhodes may have been, he lived and is part of Britain's history. Deleting him from civic awareness does no one any good. Wouldn't it be better to teach Britain's history accurately, as Jeremy Corbyn has suggested, and let Rhodes' monument stand as a warning? Erasing the past play into the Orwellian goals of the woke.
