Chinese scientist He Jiankui jailed for creating world's first gene edited babies 'in the pursuit of personal fame and gain'

The Chinese scientist who created the world's first gene edited babies has been jailed for three years for his illegal experiments, state officials have announced. He Jiankui was also fined three million yuan ($430,000) for his work, which he announced at the International Human Genome Editing Summit in Hong Kong in November, 2018.

At the summit, He told attendees how he had modified embryos so they would be more resistant to HIV. His work led to the birth of twin girls, named Lulu and Nana.

His announcement was met with worldwide condemnation and shortly after he was fired from his position at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. He was then apparently placed under some form of house arrest while authorities in China investigated his work.

In January, state news agency Xinhua announced that the government had concluded He had carried out gene editing activities on humans despite this practice being banned in the country. The case was then handed to the Ministry of Public Security. Xinhua said He's actions had violated scientific and ethical integrity and that the people involved in the research would be "dealt with seriously according to the law."

European companies have been investing in the Russian economy in ever-increasing numbers, says Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

According to Dmitriev, EU states played a significant role in driving overall foreign investment into Russia, which has also increased significantly during the year.

"At the start of this year, I forecasted that foreign direct investments [FDI] to Russia would increase by over 50 percent [in 2019]; many raised questions about this figure. Now we see that by the end of this year FDI will grow by around 70 percent. It is a very significant growth," Dmitriev told Sputnik news agency.

Today I'm going to write about Google's exceptionally dangerous decision yesterday to de facto cut off Turkey's access to Android phones.

Google has told its Turkish business partners it will not be able to work with them on new Android phones to be released in Turkey, after the Turkish competition board ruled that changes Google made to its contracts were not acceptable...

The regulator had asked Google to change all its software distribution agreements to allow consumers to choose different search engines in its Android mobile operating system. The probe was triggered by a filing by Russian competitor Yandex.

Exctinction Rebellion (ER) is a silly movement that was originally established in the UK in May 2018. A snapshot of what ER activists have been up to includes gluing themselves to an electric bus, going on hunger strike, attempting to glue themselves to the top of a train, smashing windows at the Department of Transport with a hammer and screwdriver, attempting to shutdown an airport, and attempting to spray 1,800 liters of fake blood at a government building in London (the latter attempt backfiring embarrassingly).

ER has also reached the Netherlands with a Dutch version of its website trying to lure in people from all ages to join their nonsensical cause and protests. In the week of October 7th, 2019, hundreds of ER members attempted to block the Stadshouderskade in Amsterdam, an important road in the city.

Perhaps most revealing of all, however, was when Mark Baanders, a reporter with the controversial Dutch broadcaster PowNed, went to the protests and discovered how little the protesters actually knew about what they were protesting about.

Adopting a 'religious freedom' law that opens the door to persecuting a particular faith would normally be seen as a horrifying breach of human rights, but when done to Orthodox Serbs in Montenegro, the West doesn't seem to mind.

Montenegro's ruling regime rammed the controversial law through the parliament in the dead of night between Thursday and Friday. Every single amendment of the opposition Democratic Front (DF) - proposed to alleviate concerns that the bill was deliberately targeting the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) - was rejected. When some DF members disrupted the session in protest, all of them were arrested and jailed.

Even though the law, as written, could be used to go after the Roman Catholic Church or the Islamic community, members of the Bosniak (Muslim) and Croat (Catholic) ethnic parties supported it, further demonstrating that its real purpose was to go after the SOC.

The wife of a Google whistleblower, who exposed meddling in the 2016 election, died Friday night just days after she was seriously injured in a car crash.

Psychology professor, Robert Epstein, 66, shared in a heartbreaking tweet announcing that his wife, Misti Dawn Vaughn, died after her vehicle spun out of control along a slippery road in California and into the path of a tractor-trailer.

'My beautiful wife Misti, a published poet, succumbed last night to injuries sustained in a car accident,' her grieving husband wrote.

Comment: While there is nothing immediately suspicious about the untimely death of Epstein's wife, who he is and what he's been publicly stating for years brings the possibility that this was a 'hit', a suspicion that hasn't been lost on a good number of Twitter users. And to add fuel to this suspicion, Twitter users are noting some oddities in the tweets expressing condolences to Dr. Epstein. Here's an example of the many complaints that their tweets are disappearing:

Cessna aircraft forced to make emergency landing in a cornfield in Argentina

On 28 December 2019 this Cessna 560XLS Citation Excel with 9 people on board made an emergency landing in a cornfield due to a probable engine failure (or two), 6 km from Otamendi in Argentina.

The aircraft had departed from Buenos Aires at 07:25 hours local time and was en route to Mar del Plata. However, at 08:11 it suffered an engine failure.

During the landing it evaded several trees and power lines before landing in the field. All six passengers and three crew members were able to exit the plane unharmed.

Former British immigration chiefs: Channel patrols should return illegals to France

Two former heads of British immigration agencies have said that British cutters should patrol French territorial waters in the English Channel and return illegal aliens to France before they get anywhere near Great Britain.

Observing that the current system of picking up boat migrants in British waters and ferrying them to the mainland is not deterring illegal immigration, Peter Higgins, a former director of Immigration Services, said:

"If Border force cutters are to continue to be deployed, is it not logical that they should operate in French waters, and having made an interception immediately return individuals to France?"

Mr Higgins, who worked in immigration and customs for 40 years, told The Telegraph:

"If the French are serious about solving this problem, they would not be averse to the UK cutters operating in French waters. Why is this not being done?

"One thing is for certain, if everyone were to be returned to France, the attraction of this form of trafficking would be negated immediately to the mutual benefit of the UK and France."

Elizabeth Warren's brother furious she called their father a janitor

David Herring, brother of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, said he is "furious" to learn the Massachusetts Democrat called their father a janitor on the campaign trail.

"According to a family friend, David has disagreed with the way Warren calls herself the daughter of a janitor as she describes the work he found after losing a job as a salesman after his heart attack," the Boston Globe reports.

Speaking with a family friend, Herring was adamant that his father was a maintenance worker, not a janitor. "My Dad was never a janitor," he told the Globe. Warren has referred to her father as a maintenance man in the past but has used the term "janitor" while on the campaign trail.

In a 2012 speech titled "Values and the Economic Crisis," Warren did not identify her father as a janitor. "My father held a series of jobs. His last one was mowing lawns and cleaning swimming pools for an apartment house," she said.

Warren has been accused of loosely handling the truth, famously identifying as an American Indian on a Texas bar form in 1986. In 2018, it was revealed that Warren is only between 1/64 and 1/1,024 Native American.
